PRACTICAL 10

AIM : To study the impact of a development project on human lives and

socio-economic status:

Project discussed : Bhadla Solar Park

INTRODUCTION :

The Bhadla Solar Park is a solar power plant located in the Thar
Desert of Rajasthan, India. It covers an area of 56 square kilometres and
has a total installed capacity of 2,245 megawatts (MW), making it the
largest solar park in the world as of 2023.
The park has been developed in four phases since 2015, with $775
million in funding from the Climate Investment Fund and $1.4 billion in
funding from other sources. The park contributes to India's renewable
energy goals and helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an
estimated 4 million tons per year
The Bhadla Solar Park has faced some challenges due to its
location and scale. One of the main challenges has been dust
accumulation on the solar panels, which reduces their efficiency and
output. The park is also located in an arid region that experiences
frequent dust storms and sandstorms
After its completion in December 2018, the solar park achieved
a total installed capacity of 2,055 MW, making it the largest solar park in
the world as of 2023.

IMPACT :

● Renewable Energy Generation:

○ The solar park's massive installed capacity of 2,245 MW
contributes substantially to India's renewable energy goals,
providing a clean and sustainable source of electricity.
● Job Creation:
○ According to the World Bank, the project has had a positive
impact on the local economy by generating approximately
10,000 direct and indirect jobs during both the construction
and operation phases. This not only enhances livelihoods but
also supports economic growth in the region.
● Environmental Benefits:
○ By reducing greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 4
million tons per year, the Bhadla Solar Park plays a crucial
role in mitigating climate change. This aligns with India's
commitment to reducing its carbon intensity, contributing to a
more sustainable and eco-friendly energy landscape.
● Improved Electricity Supply:
○ The park has enhanced the quality and reliability of electricity
supply in the region. This not only addresses energy needs
but also fosters economic activities by providing a stable and
consistent power source.

CONCLUSION:

In conclusion, the Bhadla Solar Park stands as a model for

sustainable energy development, making significant strides in achieving
India's renewable energy targets. While it faces challenges inherent to
its location, the positive impacts on job creation, environmental
conservation, and improved electricity supply underscore its importance
in India's energy transition.
Continued efforts to address challenges and enhance efficiency will
contribute to the long-term success and sustainability of the Bhadla
Solar Park.
