EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

In recent years, the issue of drug addiction in our country has become hotly debated by the community,
especially the superiors. The community in our country should not underestimate this and should
implement several initiatives to resolve the matter.

We've got statistics on the number of drug addicts based on their respective states and occupations.
The information we found was very clear and specific. So, the purpose of making this report is to study in
more detail the number of drug addicts from 2020 to 2022.

Based on the analysis we have conducted, we have obtained data on drug addiction cases for a period of
three years, starting from 2020 until 2022. The statistics on drug addicts encompass all states in
Malaysia. For instance, Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Pulau
Pinang, Sabah, Sarawak, Selangor, Terengganu, WP Kuala Lumpur, and WP Labuan exhibited a decrease
in the year 2021 and an increase in the year 2022. For Sarawak and WP Putrajaya is increasing in the year
2021 and decreasing in the year 2022. Then, Selangor is increasing from the year 2020 until 2022.

Finally, we can conclude that the issue of increasing the number of drug addicts in our country is very
important and should not be underestimated as it affects the future state of our country and nation.
Every group should be self-respecting and always take precautions from getting caught up with drug
feces. The Malaysian government should also implement several initiatives such as anti-drug campaigns
and tightening laws.

1
INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF PROBLEMS

In the years between 2020 and 2022, there have been variations in the number of drug addicts in
Malaysia; the number highest in 2022 (23, 517), the lowest in 2021 (18, 205), with 2020 falling in the
middle (20, 643). A large number of people of various ages, genders, and backgrounds have been
affected by the use of drugs. Drug abusers opt to use drugs for a variety of reasons.

One of the reasons why people use drugs is their own tendency. Some people are more likely to use
drugs because of their natural tendencies or curiosities. Besides that, a person's sensitivity to drug
addiction can be greatly influenced by family dynamics, upbringing, and exposure to drug use within the
family. Next, a person's likelihood of consuming drugs might be influenced by their living environment. A
wide range of factors, including unemployment, poverty, and a lack of leisure activities, could be
involved. Lastly, teenagers and young adults who have too much spare time on their hands and don't use
it productively may experiment with drugs.

Annual drug addiction-related crime data are released by the Department of data Malaysia (DOSM) in
cooperation with the National Anti-Drugs Agency (NADA). NADA's collection of data from numerous
treatment and recovery facilities sheds light on the patterns of drug addiction. The conditions under
which 18,205 people were identified as drug addicts as of September 2023 are shown in the following
data, with amphetamine-type stimulant (ATS) addiction among the addiction categories included: 4,166,
crystalline methamphetamine: 11,171, 2,756 heroin, morphine 1,078 methamphetamine pills, Cannabis:
540, others: 0 opium, 95, and 15 psychiatric drugs.

Youth who are exposed to substance misuse on a regular basis suffer a number of obstacles, such as
trouble in school, health problems (such as emotional and mental health disorders), strained
relationships with their peers, and engagement in the juvenile criminal system.

2
1.2 PURPOSE

The research objectives of the study are as follows :

● To investigate the total number of drug addicts by type of occupation and state in Malaysia from
2020 to 2022.
● To recommend the ways to reduce the cases of drug addicts by type of occupation and state in
Malaysia from 2020 to 2022.

1.3 SCOPE

This report focuses on the total number of drug addicts, followed by the state and occupation in
Malaysia from 2020 - 2022. The main part of this report is findings, conclusion and recommendation.
Based on our research, 30 diagrams are included in this report. Other than that, this study will inform the
public that the drug cases in Malaysia are getting worse. Furthermore, there are also some ways
suggested by each of the members to reduce drug cases in Malaysia based on internet searching.

1.4 METHOD OF INVESTIGATION

The method that we use to complete this report is by using secondary data. For secondary data, we got
statistics data given by our lecturer, Mr. Khairul Firhan which is the number of drug addicts by state and
type of occupation in Malaysia from 2020 to 2022. Other than that, we also use the internet for
searching data about drug addicts in malaysia. Since the investigation data is comprehensive, its
information makes it quite valuable. Then graphs and charts were created to find the purposes.

3
1.5 LIMITATIONS

To conclude this report, a number of limitations to this research are identified. To avoid the factors
affecting this report, solutions are taken in this situation.

To begin with, Our group has difficulty communicating because each member of the group has their
own responsibilities and activities, especially on weekends. Due to everyone’s responsibilities and
activities, we don’t get enough time to communicate together to discuss this report. As all of the
members were through the online class, we decided to communicate and discuss it by calling the
members through whatsapp call or google meet.

Moreover, the lack of internet while in the process of making this report. Since most of our group
members depend on the internet provided by college, the internet always got disconnected due to
unknown reasons. After we had a discussion, all of the members decided to use our own internet or be
called a ‘hotspot’ via our own phone.

In conclusion, the limitations that had been mentioned before is just a small issue that our group had to
face. We believe that the limitations are not an excuse for us to not complete this report. However, all of
the members were wishing that we could communicate more and get enough internet access in order to
smoothly complete this report.

3.0 CONCLUSION

Based on the data analysis, we can conclude that everybody plays an important role in making sure that
the number of drug addicts in each state in Malaysia decreases. As we can see in the report, we have
obtained data on drug addiction cases for a period of three years, starting from 2020 until 2022. The
statistics on drug addicts encompass all states in Malaysia. After doing the graph, we found a lot of
increases in drug addiction from 2020 to 2022. From the graph, we can show the public that the drug
cases in Malaysia are getting worse. There are many factors that influence the number of drug addicts in
each state.

Moreover, some individuals should play an important role and always take precautions to avoid getting
caught up with drug feces. Parents and families are the smallest entities in society that need to play the
most serious role in ensuring their children are not involved with drug symptoms. Also, the government
has to make sure that the number of drug addicts decreases in each state by implementing several
initiatives, such as anti-drug campaigns and tightening laws. So that our country becomes safer and freer
from the problem of using illegal drugs.

Last but not least, we hope drug addiction can be reduced in the future, making the nation safe from
murder, sexual harassment, and other crimes. This is due to the fact that drug users are unable to
restrain their thoughts from acting morally or immorally.

35
4.0 RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the research that has been done, there are a few ways to reduce the cases of drug addicts in
Malaysia. As a citizen of Malaysia, we personally think that the best way to decrease this case is, the
responsible parties, whether government or private, need to conduct education in order to combat this
drug issue. For example, organizing activities such as lectures, seminars, exhibitions and so on. It aims to
provide information, knowledge and understanding to the public, especially the youth about the dangers
of drugs and their awareness. It also helps our country to reduce the drug addicts in Malaysia.

Besides, the government must always have a drug prevention program every year. It can catch
individuals who abuse drugs and warn them early. This prevention program focuses on vulnerable
populations, such as young people, unemployed individuals, and marginalized communities. These
programs can focus on building life skills, resilience, and providing alternatives to drug use. For example,
the FAMILY ON ALERT program, the TOMORROWS LEADERS program, and the SMART program were
conducted by the government to raise awareness among individuals and provide early warnings to
prevent them from abusing drugs.

Lastly, attending a support group might help lower the number of drug addict occurrences in Malaysia,
especially for people who have overcome addiction. Some of the ways this strategy can be put into
practice are by having peer support groups and by joining mentorship programs. Peer support groups are
organized gatherings of people who have recovered from addiction who join together to share their
experiences, challenges, and triumphs. These communities offer a secure setting for frank conversation
and encouragement from one another. Apart from that, mentorship programs can be done by assigning
mentors who have successfully conquered addiction to those in recovery can offer tailored support and
direction. Mentors can provide support, responsibility, and useful guidance on overcoming obstacles.
