KERALA
OVERVIEW
The importance and antiquity of education in Kerala are
underscored by the state's ranking as among the most
literate in the country. The educational transformation of
Kerala was triggered by the efforts of the Church Mission
Society missionaries, who were the pioneers that promoted
mass education in Kerala, in the early decades of the 19th
century.] The local dynastic precursors of modern-day Kerala
—primarily the Travancore Royal Family, the Nair Service
Society, Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDP
Yogam) and Muslim Education Society (MES)]—also made
significant contribution to the progress on education in
Kerala] Local schools were known by the general
word kalaris, some of which taught martial arts , but other
village schools run by Ezhuthachans were for imparting
general education. Christian missionaries and British rule
brought the modern school education system to Kerala.
Ezhuthu palli was the name used in earlier times. The word
was derived from the schools run by the Buddhist
monasteries.

CHHATTISGARH
OVERVIEW
Education Chhattisgarh has come a long way. The state, like
many other Indian states, faced challenges in providing
quality education infrastructure and ensuring access to
schools in remote and rural areas The literacy rate in
Chhattisgarh has shown a positive trajectory. The state also
focused on promoting higher education among girls and
women and has established 26 women’s colleges. The
Chhattisgarh administration has put in conscious efforts to
alleviate the quality of education for differently-abled
people. The government has established multiple schools
and initiatives designed to meet the unique needs of
differently abled students, with the goal of providing them
with quality education and empowering them just like their
peers. In 2017, Chhattisgarh received the National Award for
the Best State in the Field of Disability.

INTRODUCTION
One of the recurring themes added to the
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh
Baghel’s “Bhent Mulaqat (Meet or Greet)”
programe recently is a brief interaction
during which he asks a few questions from a
school student in Chhattisgarhi language
and the latter replies in English. Under Bhent
Mulaqat, the Chief Minister has been
touring all the 90 Assembly constituencies in
phases to assess governance at the
grassroot level through public feedback. The
children who feature in these interactions
are the students of Swami Atmanand
Government English Medium Schools
(SAGES) that the government pitches as a
major highlight of a “pro-people” image it is
attempting to build.

OBJECTIVE
The Chhattisgarh government launched the
Swami Atmanand English Medium Schools
programme in November 2020, with the
opening of 52 schools across the state –
the programme was named after one of
Chhattisgarh’s most popular social
reformers, whose life spanned the
twentieth century. Currently, there are
1,30,000 students studying in 247 of these
schools. The programme is one of several
initiatives launched by states, including
Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh, to expand
English-medium education in government
school systems.
COMPONENTS
Officials of the Chhattisgarh
School Education Department
said affordability, quality
education with qualified
teachers, library and well-
equipped computer and science
laboratories are the reasons
parents want to get their children
enrolled in these schools. Many
experienced teachers have also
turned towards these schools to
get well-paid jobs, officials said
CONCLUSION
The education scenario in Chhattisgarh is
not very remarkable as it lacks proper
educational infrastructure. However, the
state government has launched several
programs for enhancing the academic
scenario of the state. The overall growth
in the literacy rate has been possible due
to the persistent efforts of the state
government. According to the 2001 census
report, Chhattisgarh had a literacy rate of
65.18% which included male and female
literacy rate of 77.86% and 52.40%
respectively. Special importance is given to
the education of women and students
belonging to the underprivileged section of
the society. The capital city Raipur is the
main center of higher education in
Chhattisgarh. It houses some of the most
important departments of education in the
state.
