BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF THE LESSON
Unintentional injuries can be characterized as “any injury that is not caused on purpose or with
the intention to harm”. It is a broad category that includes injuries from causes such as motor
vehicle collisions, falls, poisoning, drowning, suffocations, and work-related or sports-related
injuries.
First Aid is an important and temporary care given to a person who suddenly gets ill or injured. It
includes self-help and home care if medical assistance is not available or delayed. It can mean the
difference between life and death in extreme cases. However, we must know the limits of the first
aid we can give because improper first aid can do more harm than good in some instances. Anyone
who gives first aid is a first aider. The Objectives of First Aid are to save lives, prolong life,
alleviate suffering, and prevent further injury.

ACTIVITY: EMERGENCY! EMERGENCY! WHAT WILL I DO?

Directions: On your answer sheet, write down your immediate action to the following situations.
SITUATIONS IMMEDIATE ACTION TO BE TAKEN

BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF THE LESSON
A dressing is a piece of cloth that covers a wound to prevent infection and/or to stop
bleeding. It is a sterile pad or compress that is applied to a wound to promote healing and protect it
from further infections. A dressing is intended to come into direct contact with the wound, as
opposed to a bandage, which is typically used to keep a dressing in place. Dressing is an essential
element of standard wound care. The main purpose of wound dressing is to provide a temporary
protective physical barrier, absorb wound drainage for successful wound closure.
A wound is a break in the continuity of a tissue in the body. It may be closed in which there is no
break or damage in the skin. It is also called hematoma/contusions (bruise or discolored skin on the
body).
ACTIVITY: Picture Analysis

EHMOATAM 4. Is a bruise or discolored skin on the body.
UWOSND 5. A cut in the skin.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF THE LESSON

Cloth dressings are the most commonly used dressings, often used to protect open
wounds or areas of broken skin. They are suitable for minor injuries such as grazes, cuts or
areas of delicate skin.

TECHNIQUES IN APPLYING A DRESSING

1. Wash hands and wear gloves, if possible.
2. Unwrap the dressing as close to the wound as possible. Be sure not to touch the
wound.
3. Skin is not sterile. If the dressing slips over the victim’s skin while you are trying to
position it, discard and use a fresh one.
4. Place the dressing over the wound.
5. Use dressing that is large enough to extend at least 1 inch beyond the edges of the
wound.
6. If body tissue or organs are exposed, cover the wound with the dressing that will stick.
7. Then secure the dressing with a bandage.

ACTIVITY: Be ready! Be resourceful!

Directions: Choose one situation given below, look for some materials at home that can be
used as dressing and demonstrate how you will apply the techniques in dressing. Document
your activity and submit it to your MAPEH teacher.
