Background:

Debate speaking skills play a pivotal role in language learning and development, particularly
within extracurricular contexts such as English Clubs in educational institutions. Engaging in
debate activities not only enhances students’ linguistic proficiency but also nurtures critical
thinking, argumentation, and public speaking abilities. While numerous studies have explored
the benefits of debate speaking skills in language education, there remains a gap in the
literature regarding their significance within specific contexts, such as the English Club
environment of MAN 01 in Bengkulu City.

English Clubs serve as platforms for students to practice and improve their English language
skills outside of the traditional classroom setting. Within these clubs, students have the
opportunity to participate in various language-related activities, including debates,
discussions, and presentations. However, the extent to which debate speaking skills
contribute to students’ overall language proficiency within this context remains
underexplored.

Furthermore, the application of pedagogical approaches, such as constructivism, in

facilitating debate speaking skill development within English Clubs warrants investigation.
Constructivism emphasizes active learning, collaboration, and the construction of knowledge
through meaningful experiences. Integrating this approach into debate activities has the
potential to enhance students’ engagement, comprehension, and retention of linguistic
concepts.

Understanding the significance of debate speaking skills within the English Club setting and
the role of constructivist pedagogy in fostering their development is essential for educators
and policymakers alike. By elucidating the relationship between debate participation,
language acquisition, and pedagogical approaches, this research seeks to contribute to the
advancement of effective language learning strategies and the optimization of extracurricular
language programs in educational contexts like MAN 01 in Bengkulu City.
