The Hawazins were the enemies of the Muslims from a very long time. They
2
were located north-
east of Makkah. Saqif was a subtribe of the Hawazin tribe. Therefore, both
parties came together

3
to defeat the Muslims who were victorious on their conquest of Makkah (8 A.H).
The Saqif tribe was settled in Taif at that time. These two tribes were aware of
the growing
power and popularity of Muhammad (PBUH). The two tribes thought that they
would easily
defeat Muhammad (S.A.W) and his forces because of their recent encounter in
Makkah.
4
Therefore, the leaders of the Hawazin and Saqif tribe invited other tribes to join
hands
against the Muslim Arabs. The tribes that responded to their call were Jusham,
Nasr,
Sa‘ad bin Bakr, Bani ‘Amr bin Amir, Bani Hilal, and Bani ‘Awf bin Amir assembled
5
at Awtas along with the Hawazin and Saqif tribe.
Malik bin Awf, the general leader decided to march and fight the Muslims.
Alliance forces
were prepared and they camped in the hill of Awtas with an army of 20000. The
Hawazin
and Banu Saqif encamped in the valley of Hunain and posted archers covering
the pass in

the valley which the Holy Prophet and the Muslims had to cross before they

reach the
other side.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was accompanied by 12,000 men. Two
thousand were the
Quraish who were converted at the time of the conquest of Makkah and the
remaining 10,000 were
7
those Muslims that travelled from Makkah to Madinah along with the Prophet
Muhammad (PBUH).
some of the Muslims perceived that they were larger in number, and they would
easily win
against the opponent tribes. Some of them said,
“We shall not be defeated “
This was not liked by Allah. It is said in the Holy Quran,
Allah has already given you victory in many regions and [even] on the
day of Hunayn, when your great number pleased you, but it did not
avail you at all, and the earth was confining for you with its vastness;
then you turned back, fleeing. Then Allah sent down His tranquillity
8
upon His Messenger and upon the believers and sent down soldiers
9
angels whom you did not see and punished those who disbelieved. And
that is the recompense of the disbelievers.” (9:25-26)

The Prophet (PBUH) left Attab Ibn Asid in Makkah to look after those who were
left behind.
As the Muslims advanced, they were met with showers of arrows from all sides,

main army of Hawazin’s army attacked them from the front. This immediate
attack on the
Muslims caused them to retreat in confusion. It is reported that only some
soldiers were
left with the Holy Prophet (PBUH). These included Ali ibn Abi Talib (R.A),
Usamah (R.A),
10
Abbas ibn Abdullah (R.A) and some other. Hazrat Muhammad (S.A.W) called the
Muslims
back. On hearing the Prophet’s (PBUH) command, the Muslims returned to the
battlefield
and then fought the non-believers. Muhammad (S.A.W) said:
“Where are you going men? Come to me. I am Allah’s Messenger. I am
Mohammad, the
son of Abdullah.”
11
These words had desired effects. Muslims uttered “Labaik! Labaik!”. They
threw
themselves off their camels and horses and attacked the enemy army in all
fury. The
12
Prophet threw a handful of dust at the face of the enemy saying,
“May your faces be shameful”
13
Their eyes were thick with dust and the enemy became to retreat in utter
confusion.

Some of the enemies tried to escape from the battlefield but the Muslims
managed to
14
catch them. With this, Allah almighty bestowed a wonderful victory to the
Muslims. This

battle was very important for the Muslims from the fact that it allowed Muslims
to capture
15
massive spoils of war, 24 000 camels and 6000 prisoners as well. About 70 men
of Banu
Saqif were killed
Among the prisoners of battle was Shaima, daughter of Halima Saadia (R.A.).
Muslim
soldiers took her to the Prophet (S.A.W.) Prophet (S.A.W.) recognized her and
treated her
16
with massive respect and placed his garment on the ground and be seated her.
The other spoils of war include 40,000 goats and 160,000 silver coins. The
enemies that managed
to escape met the Muslims in the battle of Awtas. The booty and prisoners were
17
kept in valley of
Jiranah. Malik bin Awf fled to Taif with his men. Therefore, the Holy Prophet laid
siege to Taif. The
18
siege went for a month and the enemy did not come out. They made arrow
shooting and rock
hurling during the siege. Several Muslims were injured and 12 were martyred.
So the Ho;y Prophet
19
left enemy but prayed for them,
“O Allah! Give guidance to the tribe of Saqif and send them to me”
After return the Holy Prophet reached the valley of Jiranah and distributed the
booty and prisoners.
20
The delegation of Hawazin arrived and met to the Prophet to ask him to return
them the wealth

and the captives. The Holy Prophet requested the Muslims to leave the
prisoners. All of them set
out all the prisoners free. Banu Saqif accepted Islam in the 9th year of Hijra. A
delegation of Banu
Saqif came to the Holy Prophet and embraced Islam.

21
• Muslims were 12000 and enemy army was 20000 which shows that a victory
does not
come from numerical strength. Similarly, victory should not make a man
conceited and
defeat should not make a man hopeless.
22
• The resilience and determination of the leader has a deep influence on the
followers to lead
them to victory. It can change the face of battles by strengthening the hearts of
weaker
followers.
• Muslims can acquire weapons from non-Muslims to protect their interests.
However,
leadership should remain in the hands of Muslims.
23
• Behind the distribution of booty in favor of the new converts had the wisdom
to keep them
in the fold of Islam, as many of them were leaders and wealthy people. They
were new to
the faith, and this was the first spoil of war that came into their hands. Their
faith was not
24
as strong as the earlier companions of the Prophet. Prophet was possibly
unable to win
