Tools Required: Installation Instructions (Form 160.00-M11) and items not already included in the kit
Est. Time Required: 4 hours at a labor rate not to exceed $100/hour USD

GENERAL
Several of the OptiSpeed HYP1278 VSDs on YMC² chillers and the HYP1100 and HYP1300 VSDs on YK chillers
have failed due to voltage transients. Power fluctuations within a building, whether caused by storms or by equip-
ment being switched into or out of the circuit, can cause sudden spikes of input voltage to the VSD. These spikes
can damage the capacitors of the input filter, causing them to burn, and destroying the input filter as well as other
components.

SOLUTION
Once properly installed, the Eaton Surge Protection Device (SPD) is designed to protect the drive by providing a
low impedance path to ground for transient disturbances, therein limiting the level of voltage the drive is exposed
to. More detailed instructions on installing the SPD can be found in the OptiSpeed VSD Surge Protection Device
Installation Instructions (Form 160.00-M11) found on the Johnson Controls Product Literature Site or the Chiller PTS
SharePoint Site.

MATERIALS
Form 160.00-M11 contains two sets of installation instructions, one section for HYP490, HYP744 and HYP774
drives (which is not applicable to this service bulletin) and the other section for the larger HYP1100, HYP1278, and
HYP1300 drives. It is imperative that the steps for each respective drive type be strictly followed. All procedures
detailed in the manual must be performed by suitably trained and qualified personnel in accordance with all Johnson
Controls, state, and local safety procedures. The manufacturer will not be liable for any injury or damage caused
by incorrect installation resulting from a failure to follow the procedures and instructions detailed in the manual.
Please note that once installation is complete, two photos of the installation are to be taken and attached to the
Pronto Forms installation checklist for the job. Examples of these images can be found in 160.00-M11.

Work on this equipment should only be done by properly trained personnel who are qualified to work on this

trained HVAC & R journeyman or equivalent, certified in refrigerant handling and recovery techniques, and knowl-
edgeable with regard to electrical lock out/tag out procedures. The individual performing this work should be aware
of and comply with all Johnson Controls, national, state and local safety and environmental regulations while car-
rying out this work. Before attempting to work on any equipment, the individual should be thoroughly familiar with
