Complex Engineering Problem (CEP)

Course Title RCD-II Course Code CE 422

Course Instructor Engr. Dr. Muhammad Zahid Program BSc Civil Engineering
Semester 6th Weightage 10 marks
Assigning Date Submission Date

Problem Statement:
Civil Engineering Department, Multan
has the requirement to construct a laboratory of Civil Engineering Department. An architect
planned and proposed a hall with height of 20’ for the subject project. After approval of the
architectural drawings as shown in fig, the task has been assigned to structural committee to
design the undersign project for structure. Bearing capacity of soil is 2.5 ksf from soil
investigation report provided by geotechnical engineer. Convenient size of the member shall be
taken to satisfy the requirements of ACI 318-19. Superimposed dead load on the roof shall be
taken as per materials given in the architectural drawing. Live load on roof shall be taken as per
ASCE 7-10. The optimum structural design shall be done in such a manner not to disturb the
aesthetic of the building

Tasks Details
• Manually analyze and design the top slab, beams, columns and footings of the building
and verify the adequacy of the design against applicable code requirements.

• Provide complete detailing and drafting of reinforcement.

• Analyze the building using ETABs or any suitable software and compare it with the
manual calculations and develop the spreadsheet which shows the variation of slab
thickness, slab & beam moments vs spacing between beams.

Hints:
• fc’= 3000 psi

• fy =60,000 psi

• Unit weight of soil = 100 lb/ft3

• Unit weight of mud = 110 lb/ft3

• Unit weight of concrete= 150 lb/ft3

• Unit weight of brick = 120 lb/ft3

Assume any missing data

Constraints:
• Student must submit the CEP solution in the form of groups with maximum of four
students in a group.
• No limit on number of pages.
