2 SR03-01Mk2 Introduction
Scandinavian Micro Systems provides a range of Converter Units, Heading Repeaters and other
Navigation Instruments and interface units; please contact us or visit: www.scansys.no or
www.ScanRepeater.com.
The SR03-01Mk2 will interface between your new gyrocompass and your
existing Mechanical Repeater(s) systems, saving time and money
when you need to replace your old gyrocompass.
In addition you will save time and money on installation and cabling.
SR03-01Mk2 can be set up and programmed using the Front Panel Menu system for
generating virtually any type of “old-style” gyro repeater transmission system giving you a
totally flexible unit for any type of Gyrocompass Retrofit job.
SR03-01Mk2 connects to 24V DC Mains Power and generates all required Step & Synchro
signals internally.
SR03-01Mk2 converts NMEA HEADING data to Synchro signals, Step-by-Step signals (6-
step per degree) as well as Anschütz “Micro-Step” signals.
SR03-01Mk2 includes an approved HEADING MONITOR & ALARM function. The unit
monitors Heading input No. 1 and Heading input No. 2, and generates an Alarm if the
difference exceeds a pre-set value.
SR03-01Mk2 also outputs NMEA signals, Course Bus signals, RGC11 serial protocol as well
as Yokogawa $HEHRC sentence with ROT. SR03-01Mk2 calculates ROT and also outputs
the $--ROT if required.
Two SR03-01Mk2 units can be phase-synchronized with each other, taking the reference
signal from one unit and feeding it to the other. This is typically used when it is required
to drive a 1X/36X Synchro System.
SR03-01Mk2 can read NMEA speed data such as $--VHW, and drive Mechanical Synchro
SPEED Instruments. It can be configured for various Speed Scales.
SR03-01Mk2 can ALSO drive Roll & Pitch Synchro signals. It accepts NMEA Roll & Pitch
information on the HEADING #1 or HEADING # 2 inputs. You can Program Gear Ration
Separately.
This Alarm Limit is set to 5.0 degrees by default, but the limit can be adjusted by the user from
1.0 degree up to 20.0 degrees.
Example: Assume that HEADING 1 is used as the Primary Input and the Difference exceeds the
Pre-set Limit; a Compass Compare Alarm will be generated and the user will have the option to
change the Primary Input to HEADING 2.
This requires a Manual Confirmation of the Alarm and a Manual Switch-Over at the SR03-01Mk2
Front Panel or at the SR03-03 Remote Control Unit.
Therefore when using the Heading Monitoring function, it is highly recommended to install the
SR03-03 Remote Control Unit in the Bridge Consol. See section 2.4 below.
The SR03-03 would typically be mounted in the Bridge Consol allowing alarms and operational
issues to be resolved from the Bridge.
This is especially useful and might be required if the SR03-01Mk2 is used to monitor two
compasses. See System Diagram suggestions in Figure 3 and 4
Critical alarms include Loss of Power Input, Load Over-Current, High Temperature and Loss of
Phase Output signals. For a closer description of all the alarm system in SR03-01MK2, please see
Chapter 6.5 Alarm System Description, page 63.
An Alarm will start flashing the Red Alarm light on the Front Panel, drop the Alarm Output Relay
and start the Sound Alert Alarm.
To silence the Alarm; Press the Red Alarm Button, this will cancel the Sound Alarm, but the Red
Light will continue Flashing until the Alarm situation is fixed.
If a SR03-03 Remote Control Unit is installed on the Bridge, the same functions can be performed
from there. Also, instead of using the SR03-03, you can acknowledge the alarms from a Central
Alarm Monitor System using the NMEA Alarm connection (see section 5.7.4 below.)
This will give you two sets of Synchro Signals that are Phase-Locked to each other, using one
common Reference Signal. Typically used when it is required to drive a 1X/36X Synchro System.
For instance: One full 360 degree turn of the Synchro can represent:
a) -10 knots to + 90 knots
b) 0 knots to 80 knots
c) or other combinations of your choice can be set up
ALARM:
$--ALR,hhmmss.ss,xxx,A,A,c--c*hh<CR><LF>
Please note:
If both HEADING inputs are used – the HEADING OUPUT will always be the same data which is selected to the
drive the ANALOG (Step/Synchro) Output signals.

RESET The red light will change to “Steady Red” and will remain in this state until the Alarm
Condition is rectified, at which time the red light will be turned off.
Acknowledge:
An alarm must always be acknowledged, even if the alarm situation disappears. This can be done
from the Main Operator Panel on the SR03-01Mk2, on a SR03-03 Remote Control Unit (if
installed) or from the ship’s Centralized Alarm Monitoring system (CAM).
ALARM
To acknowledge an Alarm on SR03-01Mk2 or on the SR03-03 – press the Red Flashing
RESET Alarm Button.
Warning: A warning means that some SR03-01Mk2 operational parameter is close to the
allowed limit, but there is not yet an actual Alarm situation (a typical situation can be that
the temperature in the unit is very high, but not yet so high that the unit must be turned
off). The Red Alarm Button will be flashing and an Alarm text will be flashing in the
Display. However, there will be NO Audible Alarm and the Alarm Output-Relay will NOT be
activated.
Alarm: An error situation that must be corrected, but is NOT critical to the physical
operation of SR03-01Mk2 unit. (A typical situation could be the loss of the NMEA input
signal from the Gyro – this must obviously be corrected immediately for safe ship
operation, but it is not critical for the physical operation of the SR03-01Mk2 unit itself).
The Red Alarm Button will be flashing and an Alarm text will be flashing in the Display.
There will be an Audible Alarm and the Alarm Output-Relay will be activated.
Critical Alarm: This is an error situation that must be corrected and where the SR03-
01Mk2 might be permanently damaged if the situation is allowed to continue. Therefore
the SR03-01Mk2 will be turned off to prevent it from being permanently damaged. The
Red Alarm Button will be flashing and an Alarm text will flash in the Display. There will be
an Audible Alarm and the Alarm Output-Relay will activate. In addition, the SR03-01Mk2
output will be shut OFF.
(For a detailed description of the Alarm System see section 6.5 below.)

CAUTION: Make sure you SET-UP Output Voltages and Frequencies for Step/Synchro
BEFORE you connect the Mechanical Repeaters. SR03-01Mk2 can damage the Repeater
Motors if the Voltage is too high – or if the Frequency is wrong
By Default the SR03-01Mk2 only Heading Input #1 is enabled and it is configured for NMEA
$HEHDT and a Baud Rate of 4800 b/sec. When you enable Heading Input #2; its default setting is
also NMEA $HEHDT and a Baud Rate of 4800 b/sec.
If the signals are connected correctly; SR03-01Mk2 will most likely read the NMEA Heading
signals without any further set-up changes being required.
REMEMBER: If both Heading #1 and Heading #2 is connected: Heading #1 will be selected as the
Default PRIMARY Heading Input.
If there are no Heading Input Alarms (and no Flashing Text in the display), then there is no need
for further Configuration of Heading Input(s).
If there is an error message – please check the input wiring connection and signal polarity. See
section 5.7 SMALL SIGNAL Terminal Block below for more details.
EDIT
To enter the Set-Up Menu for Heading Input configuration Press to access the Main Menu,
ENTER
and then follow the instructions on how to use and navigate the Menu System given in section
3.4
CAUTION: Make sure you SET-UP Output Voltages and Frequencies for Step/Synchro
BEFORE you connect the Mechanical Repeaters. SR03-01Mk2 can possibly damage the
Repeater Motors if the Voltage is too high – or if the Frequency is wrong
Then press until you find the Synchro type you need and select it.
Please Note:
If the combination of Frequency, Reference Voltage, Phase Voltages and Gear Ratio is NOT in
STANDARD Synchro type list; you can proceed to the “Custom Synchro Menu” to configure “your
own” combination of frequency, reference voltage, phase voltage and gear ratio. For a detailed
example on how to customize the Synchro Output; see section 5.9.4 below.
BEFORE you connect the SR03-01Mk2 to the Synchro Repeater wires you must POWER
down the OUTPUT as Follows:
POWER
This is an alarm situation. The display will indicate “Sync/Step POWERED off” and
Alarm will go ON.
ALARM
Connect the mechanical repeaters cables R1, R2, S1, S2 & S3 to the MAIN OUTPUT
Terminal Block (P0). See sections 4.1 and 4.2 above. Then go to 4.4.4 below
POWER
Press and HOLD the button for 1 second.
This will “fade in” (Soft-Start) the Synchro Signals to full amplitude.
This will cancel the Alarm situation and the “Sync/Step POWERED off” text will disappear.
SR03-01Mk2 should now be in Normal Operation Mode delivering Power to the Mechanical
Repeaters. You should notice that the current consumption has increased (Ref Main Display
section 3.1 above
When Connecting Old Mechanical Repeaters they might be faulty and even “stuck”.
Please check that they all turn easily. If a Mechanical Repeater does not turn properly (is
“stuck”) it might draw 5-10 times more power than a normal, working repeater. In such
a Case you should get a Stuck Repeater Alarm. See section 4.4.5 below
You can now start Aligning the Mechanical Repeaters to the correct heading. See section 4.7
below
If the Load on SR03-01Mk2 show a large variation when the Repeaters are Turning, it is most
likely caused by one or more of the repeaters having a mechanical malfunction.
When this Delta Load (variation) exceeds a Pre-Set Limit – a Stuck Repeater Warning is
generated.
CAUTION: Make sure you SET-UP Step (6) Output Voltages (6 steps per degree
system), BEFORE you connect the Mechanical Repeaters. SR03-01Mk2 can possibly
damage the Repeater Motors if the Voltage is too high – or the Frequency is wrong
For the Mechanical Repeaters or for the SR03-01Mk2, it will not matter if you connect the system
for R+ or R- , but it MIGHT MATTER for other electronic inputs such as on Radar, Sat. Nav. etc.
EDIT
Then press 2 times until you find the “Standard Step Format” menu.
EDIT
Use until you find the Step voltage you want: (24, 35, 50 or 70V DC).
BEFORE you connect the SR03-01Mk2 to the Step Repeater wires you must “POWER
DOWN” the OUTPUT as Follows:

24VDC Power supply Drawn Approved
To make sure that the installation will meet the DnV approval requirements, it is REQUIRED to
use SHIELDED cables and that the unit is properly grounded by using the Main Grounding Bolt,
seen on the picture below.
Instructions:
Remove outer insulation of the shielded cable to expose the shield (screen).
The exposed screen (shield) should be minimum 10 mm long.
Insert the cable into gland as shown and make sure good contact is achieved.
Lock the cap and then tighten with the amount of torque shown in the table above.
Power is intended to be taken from the Ship’s battery system and the SR03-01Mk2 will normally
draw between 5 and 16 Amps depending on load. A power source able to supply 24V 16 Amps is
recommended. See technical Specification for more details.
The main DC Power Circuit Breaker and Trip Relay are shown below. Please make sure you
connect with the correct polarity.

CAUTION: Make sure you PROGRAM (SET-UP) SR03-01Mk2 Output Voltages and
Frequencies BEFORE you connect the Mechanical Repeaters. SR03-01Mk2 can damage
the Repeater Motors if the Voltage is too high – or if the Frequency is wrong.
Follow the instruction in sections 5.9 and 5.10 below before you physically connect the
Mechanical Repeater.
Inside the SR03-01Mk2 you will find the STEP/SYNCHRO Terminal for connecting:
The Lamp Drive is a separate 24V DC voltage for providing current to the lamps inside the various
Mechanical Repeaters. For Synchro Repeaters this is required only for Yokogawa type Repeaters.
CAUTION: BEFORE you connect the Mechanical Repeaters; make sure you have
programmed SR03-01Mk2 for the CORRECT Synchro Output Voltages and Frequencies.
If they are wrong it could damage the Mechanical Repeaters motors.
Connect the Mechanical Synchro Repeaters to; R1, R2 (Reference signal) and S1, S2, S3 (Phase
signals). Follow the guidelines in section 5.9 below in order to program (Set-Up) the Synchro
Output for the correct Voltages and Frequencies.
Connect the Mechanical Step-by-Step Repeaters to; R+ (for Positive reference) or R- (for
Negative Reference), then connect S1, S2, S3 (Phase signals).
Follow the guidelines in section 5.10 below in order to program (Set-Up) the 6 steps per degree
output for the correct voltages.
Please note that most Step systems are connected for Positive Ref. (R+). However, it will not
matter to SR03-01Mk2 if you connect the Mechanical Repeaters as Positive Step or Negative
Step.
CAUTION: BEFORE you connect the Mechanical Repeaters; make sure you have
programmed SR03-01Mk2 for the CORRECT Micro-Step Output Voltage. If they are
wrong it could damage the Mechanical Repeaters motors.
Connect the Mechanical Anchütz Micro-Step using S3 as “N” Neutral. Then connect the two
Phases to S1 and S2.
Follow the guidelines in section 5.10 below in order to program (Set-Up) the Anschütz Micro Step
correctly.
In the SET-UP MENU we have attempted to associate the various gyrocompass models with their
respective Synchro and Step Transmission Voltages & Frequency combinations and you can select
“Gyrocompass model” from the menu.
Other models and repeater motors could be installed; therefore please verify Frequency,
Reference Voltage and Phase Voltages before Configuring SR03-01Mk2.
Explanation: The Mechanical Repeater motor is basically a rotating transformer, therefore the
Reference voltage R1/R2 will be transformed back to Phase signals MRS1/MRS2/MRS3, sending
energy back to the SR03-01Mk2. The returned phase voltages might be higher than those
generated by the SR03-01Mk2 and the unit must then “sink” the returned power. This will
generate more heat inside the SR03-01Mk2, and it should be avoided if possible.
SR03-01Mk2 should be set up to generate equal phase voltage (S1-S2, S2-S3, S3-S1) to those
generated by the Mechanical Repeater (MRS1-MRS2, MRS2-MRS3, MRS3-MRS1).

Then press until you find the Synchro type you need and select it.
Please Note: If the combination of Frequency, Reference Voltage, Phase Voltages and Gear
Ratio is NOT in the STANDARD Synchro type list, you can proceed to the “Custom Synchro Menu”
to configure “your own” combination.
For a detailed example on how to customize the Synchro Output, see section 5.9.4 below.
When you have determined what type of Synchro system you have, go to the Synchro Set-Up
Menu and select this Synchro Format from the list of STANDARD Synchro types.
CAUTION: BEFORE you connect the Mechanical Repeaters; make sure you have
programmed SR03-01Mk2 for the CORRECT Synchro Output Voltages and Frequencies.
If they are wrong it could damage the Mechanical Repeaters motors.
Below is a step-by-step example on how to SET-UP the Synchro Output Format using the pre-
programmed LIST of Gyrocompass Mechanical Repeater types.

When Connecting Old Mechanical Repeaters they could be faulty and even “stuck”.
Please check that they all turn easily. If a Mechanical Repeater is “stuck” it might draw
5-10 times more power than a normal, working repeater. In this case you will get a
Stuck Repeater Alarm. See section 5.9.7 below
If the Load on SR03-01Mk2 show a large variation when the Repeaters are Turning, it is most
likely caused by one or more of the repeaters having a mechanical malfunction.
When this Delta Load (variation) exceeds a Pre-Set Limit – a Stuck Repeater Warning is
generated.
CAUTION: BEFORE you connect the Mechanical Repeaters, make sure you have
programmed SR03-01Mk2 for the CORRECT Step-by-Step output voltages. If they are
wrong it could damage the Mechanical Repeaters motors.
For the Mechanical Repeaters or for the SR03-01Mk2, it will not matter if you connect the system

Another option is to use the SR03-03 Remote Control Unit. It can be mounted in the Bridge
Console (see section 5.7 above for more details on how to connect the SR03-03.)
A third option is to connect the SR03-01Mk2 to a Centralized Alarm System using the
SR03-01Mk2 NMEA alarm connection (see section 5.7 above for more details on how to connect
SR03-01MK2 to a Centralized Alarm System.)
Fore details on the NMEA Alarm communication please see section 6.5.9 below
To control a Synchro motor you need three phase signals S1, S2 and S3 and two reference
signals R1 and R2.
R1 to R2 = KE sin ωt
When SR03-01Mk2 restarts, the stored heading (recovered heading RH) will be used to
automatically align the Mechanical Repeater with Gyrocompass Heading.
Please Note:
If SR03-01Mk2 shuts down when the mechanical repeaters are turning at very high Rate of Turn
(ROT), the mechanical repeaters might not stop immediately. This could cause misalignment
during automatic recovery.
It is very unlikely that this will happen but if it does, just re-align the SR03-01Mk2 once more.
In addition; SR03-01Mk2 measures the average current drawn from the 24 V power and triggers
the Overload Alarm if the average Current Exceeds a Pre-Set limit. This pre-set Current Limit can
be edited.
The Overload Alarm will turn off the Output Voltage and after 10 seconds it will try to re-connect
the Output Voltage automatically by performing a “soft start”.
If, however, the Output Voltage is automatically re-connected as described above, and remains
connected without exceeding the Current Limit for more than 60 seconds, it is assumed that the
overload situation was temporary. In this case the Overload Alarm will be re-set and operation
will continue as normal.
The Stuck Repeater Warning will not trigger the Alarm Output Relay or the Sound Alarm.
If the stuck repeater is removed (or repaired) the Stuck Repeater Warning is also removed.

When SR03-01Mk2 restarts, the stored Heading (Recovered Heading (RH)) will be used to
automatically align the Mechanical Repeater with Gyrocompass Heading.
It is very unlikely that this will happen, but if it does, just re-align the SR03-01Mk2 once more.
In addition, the SR03-01Mk2 measures the average current drawn from the 24 V power and
triggers the Overload Alarm if the average current exceeds the pre-set limit. This pre-set Current
Limit can be edited.
The Overload Alarm will turn off the output voltage and after 10 seconds it will automatically try
to re-connect the output voltage, by initiating a “soft start”.
If, however, the Step Output Voltage is automatically re-connected as described above, and
remains connected without exceeding the Current Limit for more than 60 seconds, it is assumed
that the overload situation was temporary. In this case the Overload Alarm will be re-set and
operation will continue as normal.
SR03-01Mk2 has three different alarm levels: Warning, Alarm and Critical Alarms.
Please note:
Even if the alarm situation disappears by itself, it is required to acknowledge the alarm.
Acknowledging an alarm can be done from the Main Operator Panel on the SR03-01Mk2 , from
the SR03-03 Remote Control Unit (if installed) or from the ship’s Centralized Alarm Monitoring
system (CAM) ( see section 6.5.9 NMEA Alarm Output. )
6.5.2 Warning
A warning means that some SR03-01Mk2 operational parameter is close to the allowed limit, but
there is not yet an actual Alarm situation (a typical situation can be that the temperature in the
unit is very high, but not yet so high that the units must be turned off). The Red Alarm Button
will be flashing and an Alarm text will be flashing in the Display. However, there will be no Sound
Alarm and the Alarm Output-Relay will NOT be activated.
6.5.3 Alarm
An Alarm represents an error situation that could affect the safe operation of the ship and it
MUST BE CORRECTED. However an “Alarm” is NOT critical to the physical operation of SR03-
01Mk2 unit.
A typical situation could be the loss of the NMEA input signal from the Gyrocompass; this must
obviously be corrected immediately to maintain safe operation of the ship, but it is not critical for
the physical operation of the SR03-01Mk2 unit itself.
The Red Alarm Button will be flashing and an Alarm text will be flashing in the Display.
There will be a Sound Alarm and the Alarm Output-Relay will be activated.
The Red Alarm Button will be flashing and an Alarm text will be flashing in the Display. There
WILL be an Audible Alarm and the Alarm Output-Relay will be activated. When a “critical alarm”
occurs the following will be executed:
The NMEA Alarm communication transmits a sentence containing an “ALR” (Alarm), and expects
to receive a sentence containing an “ACK” (Acknowledge).
NOTE: SR03-01Mk2 does not support UTC Time. Therefore the time field is empty (“,,”).
6.5.9.2 NMEA ACK Sentences “Acknowledge alarm”
The NMEA ACK sentence can acknowledge only one alarm ID at a time. When the SR03-01Mk2
receives NMEA ACK it will acknowledge only that one alarm ID. If there is more than one alarm,
each alarm must be acknowledged separately.
As long as there are any unacknowledged alarms, the Red Alarm LED will remain flashing. The
Red Alarm LED will stop flashing as soon as all alarms are acknowledged and it will then go to a
steady Red Light ON.
The steady Red Alarm Light will then remain ON until all alarms are repaired (or fixed).

EDIT EDIT
When Power-Up again, SR03-01Mk2 will attempt to read the current Gyrocompass Heading from
Heading Input #1. If it does not find valid data on Heading #1 it will attempt Heading Input #2.
Please NOTE:
If the ship was turning very fast at the time SR03-01Mk2 was shut OFF (i.e. the Mechanical
Repeaters were rotating with a high ROT), then it is possible that the Mechanical Repeaters did
not stop immediately and the there could be a discrepancy between the stored Heading data and
the actual Heading of the Mechanical Repeaters.

Synchro Output can be programmed separately for 1X, 2X, 36X. etc.
For 1X (1:1) Synchro signals this results in an absolute “static accuracy” of better than ±0.4
degrees (typically better than ±0.2 degrees) and better than ±0.01 degrees for 360X.
Since the input data resolution is normally 0.1 degree with NMEA 0183, which is equal to 36
motor degrees at 360X, it is necessary to filter the data in order to rotate the Step/Synchro
Mechanical Repeaters smoothly.
The filter used by SR03-01Mk2 is a Low Pass Average Filter with a Filter Length of 0.5 seconds.
NOTE:
As of SR03-01Mk2 Version v2.10 – and ALARM is added to detect if the LAG ERROR is larger than
30 degrees.
This is specifically added because as SR03-01Mk2 Version v2.10 it is possible to reduce the
Step/Synchro OUTPUT signal Rate of Turn; to slow down the signal follow up rate.
This could potentially create a larger difference between the Actual gyrocompass input signal and
the SR03-01Mk2 Step or Synchro OUTPUT signal.
Baud Rate can be selected from the menu as: 2400, 4800, 9600, 19200 or 38400 b/sec

PROTOCOLS available:
The fans run at all times, normally at a slow speed, but the speed will increase when the
temperature inside the unit increases. If the fans malfunction and stop the temperature inside the
SR03-01Mk2 will increase quickly and when it reaches 65 °C a Warning Alarm will be given, if the
inside temperature increases further to above 70 °C degrees, the SR03-01Mk2, will be shut off
automatically (see 6.5 Alarm System Description for details.)
The two fans are mounted in an exchangeable Filter Module that can be ordered as a spare part
and replaced.
If there is a temperature Warning or a High Temperature Alarm, this is a strong indication that it
is time to check the fans and clean the filter (see section 7.4.3 above.)
3. If it is necessary to
change the fans,
unscrew two screws
at the top of the
fan module. Then
the fan module can
be pulled straight
out. Unplug the fan
connector and
