Teaching English to Street Kids

I volunteer with a charity organization that focuses on helping street children, and within the
organization, I have the opportunity to be involved in educational programmes for children. One
of the educational programs is teaching English, because we believe that education is a right that
everyone has regardless of social or economic status. Our first step was to find a place
frequented by these street children Usually, in quiet corners of the city or under bridges. After
founded the location, we approached them kindly and warmly to build a good relationship with
them before starting the lesson. Every 4 times a week we gather under the big tree by the
roadside to learn together, from the alphabet, vowels, diphthongs and so on. Initially, some
children hesitate and find it difficulty to understand due to their limited knowledge, but with
strong will and determination they are quick learners. They exchanged English words with each
other in conversation sessions, making rapid progress under our guide. During the teaching
process, we also give positive encouragement and praise to each child for their efforts. We
believe that providing support and recognition will motivate them to continue learning and
improving their English skills. At the end of the day, seeing the progress they've made and the
little smiles that come from their faces is our greatest reward. We believe that by providing
access to education to street children, we can open up better opportunities for them for a brighter
future.
