Abstract
This study is called "A Study of Adjacency Pairs in The Late Late Show with James Corden, A Case
Study in An Afternoon with Prince Harry and James Corden." The episode looks into certain social
actions that are shown by what a pair says and what they like. Data were analyzed using Harvey
Sack (1986) and Yule (1996) theory This research tries to find kind of adjacency pairs which are
included in conversation between James and Prince Harry, which are the dominant types of
adjacency pairs, and the particular social action that is revealed between James and Prince Harry.
The. This research applied descriptive qualitative method with case study design to obtain the result.
the data that were analyzed were taken from The Late Late Show with James Corden YouTube
channel that were including transcribing, identifying, coding, describing and interpreting. The
researcher found thirty-five pairs utterances that construct in the conversation between James
Corden and Prince Harry which are ten types of adjacency pairs found. At last, researcher found
that question-answer is the dominant types of adjacency pairs that relate with this research subject,
Talk Show, which absolutely will contain question answer segment and preferred response is the
dominant preference structure which indicates both James and Prince Harry close to each other in
pragmatic perspective.

INTRODUCTION

Humans are by nature always want to be connected with other humans. One of the
ways that humans can connect with each other is by communicating. For humans,
communication is something that cannot be separated from life, because according to Harold
D. Lasswell (Hafied Cangara, 2018), communication has three basic functions; first as a
human desire to control their environment; second as a human effort to adapt to their
environment; third as a human effort to transform the legacy of socialization. It can be
concluded that communicating with other human is very fundamental for human in their life.
Conveying their desire and studying other human communication skills through sign symbols
which are then followed by the ability to give meaning to each of these symbols in the form
of verbal language.
To summarize Hanson's (2018) definition of communication: talking to oneself.
Something as simple as a chat or a hug can show your mom how much you care. The face-to-
face method of communication is not the only one used by humans. Interpersonal contact can
occur by phone call, text message, email, or even a greeting card, albeit at a greater emotional
distance than in a face-to-face encounter. The goal of mass communication is to convey a
message to a diverse group of people, the vast majority of whom the communicator has never
met. The number of available channels for giving and receiving feedback is continuously
expanding as a result. Over the past few years, there has been a shift in the transmission of
media material away from legacy media channels and toward online digital media, which gives
viewers greater flexibility in viewing habits and location. It allows people to meet others
without really meeting them.
We can all know this from the news that is broadcast on various information media
platform which people in general, nowadays, are used to accessing, so that information can be
easily obtained. The news conveyed is usually obtained from survey results or through direct
interviews with sources wrapped in various types of programs, one of which is talk shows.

pp. 730-737 increased throughout the 20th century.
Given the nature of a TV talk show's live broadcast, the host and guest are free to
speak their minds as the topic unfolds. Conversation, as a form of human activity, refers to
the spontaneous, participatory conversation through which people form and maintain
e-ISSN: relationships with one another. Communicating with one another verbally in order to
2686-5009 exchange information, thoughts, feelings, and opinions is one of the most fundamental
human activities. A conversation is defined as "a chat between two or more people in which
thoughts, feelings, and ideas are conveyed, questions are asked and answered, or news and
information are exchanged" (Cambridge Dictionary, 1995). According to Fairclough (2001:
9), conversations have a predetermined structure that can be seen in how each person plans
their turn in a discussion and how they respond to the turns of others. Conversation, as
defined by Levinson (1983: 284), is an intimate form of free-flowing discourse in which all
participants take turns talking. Furthermore, Yule (1996: 71) developed a conversational

in the Late Late Most of the time, people respond to each other's comments in a discussion in a

Corden Episode) conversation's structure and the various factors at play inside it. It turns out that there are a
number of recurring rhythms in the organization of speech that are essentially unconscious.
These sequences are called adjacency pairs. Here is the example of adjacency pair in the
conversation by Yule:
(1) Anna : Hello. (Greeting 1)
Bill : Hi. (Response for greeting 1)
Anna : How are you? (Question 2)
Bill : Fine. (Answer 2 for question 2)
Anna : See ya! (Leave taking 3)
Bill : Bye. (Response for leave taking 3)
Adjacency pairs are utterances from two different speakers, when the first speaker
stops talking so the second can have their turn. The reaction is dependent on the second
speaker and is intrinsically linked to the first. That allows us to categorize the pairs based
on the initial statement and the subsequent response. Experts have proposed certain
common sorts of adjacency pairs, however these types may vary from one expert to the
next. Some examples of adjacency pairs compiled by various authorities are as follows:
declaration, assertion, assessment, blame, command, complaint, compliment, greeting,
Mutiara Indah, invitation, leave taking, offer, question, requesting, suggestion, summon, threat, and
Tika Yulianti warning. Additionally, there is a sizable audience for the study of conversations. Previous
research into adjacency pairs analysis includes Syarifah's (2018) attempt to determine the
most common types of adjacency pairs and sequences that reveal the similarities and
differences between two episodes of two talk shows in Indonesia based on the distribution
of adjacency pair types, the dis-preferred responses, and the topics that are discussed. In his
study, she revealed that Ini Talk show was found to be the most entertaining, while Sarah
Sechan was found to be the most enlightening.
Iswara's thesis (2019) looked into the ways in which adjacency pair patterns form
in the linguistic exchange of a roundtable discussion with Susi Pudjiastuti, as well as the
ways in which the discussion's communicative function was realized and the participants'
perceptions of power and status were affected. The results showed eleven patterns of

identifying the pairs utterance that included to be analyzed based on topic. This step helps

or a dis-preferred response. In some utterances, there are also adjacency pair expansions.
This step is needed to find what kind of adjacency pair included in the conversation

Based on explanation data above, there are ten types of adjacency pairs found and

data found show that question-answer is the dominant types of adjacency pairs that relate
with this research subject, Talk Show, which absolutely will contain question answer

Another interview, For Your Consideration, CBS Studio program, which had
done by James Corden, James said that Prince Harry was the one who offered to do
something in James CBS show in order to cheer up people in a way. This becomes
significance to The Late Late Show with James Corden for having first sit-down interview
with Prince Harry after his phenomenal decision and it becomes the latest way to produce
new segment of his program to keep it going as James cited in that interview.
According to Prince Harry as a royal family member who had a lot of rules should
be followed like he not allowed to speech without permission, he should dress modestly
and never overtly casual, having all-black outfit when travel, not expressing his opinion
on political matters, showing public display of affection, leaving table discreetly saying

was carried out in relaxed way but still informative and entertaining for the audience.
And last, the third study question considers what kind of social activity takes
place during James Corden and Price Harry's chat. Preferring and disliking can be viewed
from two different angles, the pragmatic and the social, as stated by Yule (1996).
Pragmatically speaking, expressing a preference for one over another suggests a closeness
and speed of connection, while expressing a preference for the opposite suggests a
distance and a lack of connection. Given the hypothesis that the dominance of a preferred
or dispreferred response may be interpreted as the distance between the first and second
parts of a conversation, it is easy to see why people might strive to avoid setting the stage
