4.1 Scale Drawings

Scale drawing is the drawing of an object with all measurements in the drawing proportional
to the measurements of the object

The ratio is,

Measurement of scale drawing : Measurement of object

Scale drawings in the form of ratio is,

- 1 : n, where n is the positive integer or fraction

- 1: n means one unit on the scale drawing will represent n units on the object.

If n <1, then the size of the scale drawing is bigger than the size of the object.

If n >1, then the size of the scale drawing is smaller than the size of the object.

If n = 1, then the size of the scale drawing is the same as the size of the object.

1) The following figures show two regular hexagons. B’ is the scale drawing of B. What is the scale used.

2) J is the scale drawing of K drawn on a grid paper 2 cm x 2 cm. Find the scale used.

4) It is found that square P'Q'R'S is the scale drawing of PQRS. The area of the square PQRS is 16 cm2 and the area
of the square P'Q'R'S is 64 cm2. Find the length side of the square PQRS and the length side of the square P'Q'R'S',
hence determine the scale of the drawing.

5) Triangle LMN is a field plan drawn on a scale of 1 : 10. Find the actual length of MN.

8) A pilot will continue his flight from country A to country B based on a map scale of 1 : 2 000 000. The pilot found
that the distance between the two countries is 35 cm on the map. Calculate the actual distance, in km, of the two
countries.

9) The actual distance between Kuching and Sibu is 320 km. Find the distance within these two cities on the map with a
scale of 1: 4 000 000 in cm.

10) The figure shows a scale drawing of a circle. Let the scale used is 1: 7, calculate the circumference of the circle, in
cm, of the actual circle.

11) The figure below shows a scale drawing of a plan of two rooms of square-shaped floor. The scale used is 1: 100. The
cost of installing tiles for the floor of these rooms is RM42 per square metre. How much does the cost of installing
tiles for these two rooms?

12) The area of a school building in a plan is 25 cm?. Given the actual area of the building is 225 m2. Find the scale used.

13) A river is measured 12 cm on a map. If the actual length of the river is 72 km, find the scale used.

14) Given 2 cm represents 8m. Write the scale in the form 1 : n.

15) The length ratio of the scale drawing of a road to the actual road is 18 : 6. Find the scale used.

16) The exhibition room in the school hall is divided into 4 sections as shown in the following plan. The plan is drawn on
a scale of 1 : 600. Calculate the actual area, in m2, for section 1 and 3.

17) The scale of y : 1 is used to draw a spider.. The length of the scale drawing of the spider is 9 cm, while the actual
length is 6 mm. What is the value represented by y?
