Chapter 8 Probability

8.2 Using grids to find probabilities

Learning objectives:
• Draw 2-dimensional grid to represent the sample space
Use a two-dimensional grid to illustrate the sample space

To construct a 2D grid, we draw a plane with two axes, where each

axes represents one of the events that are taking place. Then we
put a dot in each position to represent a possible outcome.

Each point on the grid represents a possible outcomes.

Summary
The Sample space of an
experiment is the set of its S={HH, HT, TH, TT}
possible outcomes.

If we have two operations we

can use a two-dimensional
grid to illustrate the sample
space efficiently.
Illustrate the sample space for tossing a coin and
rolling a die simultaneously.

A die has the numbers 0, 0, 1, 1, 4 and 5. It is rolled
twice. Illustrate the sample space using a 2-D grid.
Hence find the probability of getting:
• a total of 5
• two numbers which are the same.
