Narrative Essay (Notes)

1. A narrative is a fictional account (realistic) of a series of events. Its main purpose is to

entertain, to inform or to change an attitude.
2. First and foremost, understand and have a good grasp of the topic or story you are
writing (Do not write out of topic!).
3. Next, plan your story and arrange the sequence of events or ideas.
4. Start off your story with and engaging introduction (make it interesting). You want to
grab your reader’s attention.
5. Follow through with a solid body. Build up events leading up to the climax. End on a
happy or interesting note. You could also conclude your story with a moral, if
relevant.

6. To flesh out your stories, draw on events and ideas that you have read in the
newspapers and books or viewed on television (get idea from experience). Adding
details will make your story more interesting.
7. Stories are generally written in the past tense.
8. Use the first-person pronouns (I and we) if you are writing about your own
experience.
9. Before handing up your composition, edit for mistakes in grammar, spelling and
punctuation (check the errors).
