In 1919 Gandhiji gave a call for a satyagraha against the Rowlatt Act that the British had just
passed. Gandhiji asked the Indian people to observe 6 April, 1919 s a day of non-violent
opposition to this Act, as a day of “humiliation and prayer” and hartal. Satyagraha sabhas were
setup to launch the movement. The Rowlatt satyagraha turned out to be the first all-India
struggle against the British government. The British government took brutal measures to
suppress it.

Ans) To protest against the repressive Rowlatt Act and demand the withdrawal of the Rowlatt
Act.

7. Read the following extract and answer the following questions.


Before 1947, there was only one iron and steel plant in the country- TISCO. It was privately
owned. After independence the government took the initiative and set up several iron and steel
plants. TISCO was started in 1907 at Sakchi near the confluence of the rivers Subarnarekha and
Kharkai in Jharkhand.

(i) Why Iron and steel industry is known as feeder industry?

a) C.K Janu, an Adivasi activist has pointed out that one of the violators of the
Constitutional rights guaranteed to tribal people are governments in the various states of
India.

paper mills etc.to exploit tribal lands and forcibly evict tribal people from their traditional
forests in the process of declaring forests as reserved or as sanctuaries.

Ans) Risk Reduction Measures
1. Densely populated residential areas should be separated far away from the residential
areas.
2. People staying in the vicinity of industries should be aware of the storage of toxins or
hazardous substances and their possible effects in case if an accident occurs.
3. Fire warning and fighting system should be improved.
4. Storage capacity of toxic substances should be limited.
5. Pollution dispersion qualities in the industries should be improved.
12. Write a short note on the Anglo- Maratha wars.
a) The Marathas were subdued in a series of wars. In the first war that ended in 1782
with the treaty of Salbai, there was no clear victor.
b) The second Anglo-Maratha war (1803-05) resulted in the British gaining Orissa and
the territories north of the Yamuna river including Agra and Delhi.
c) Finally, the third Anglo-Maratha war of 1817-19 crushed Maratha power. The Peshwa
was removed and sent away to Bithur near Kanpur with a pension.
d)The Company now had complete control over the territories south of the Vindhyas.
