1. Research suggests that self-concepts are high in early childhood,
adolescence through adolescence, bottom out and then increase
through adulthood peaking in the late 60s and then dropping. (Robins &
Trzesniewski, 2005) Explain why?
❖ I’m guesting by “Self-concepts are high” you are referring to levels of
self-esteem, the extent to which people generally “like” who they
are, or at least their concept of themselves.

2. We are not influenced by other people’s opinions per se. We are influence
by our own imaginations or perceptions or opinions on how others see us.
This means that we are actively engaged in defining our self-image or self-
concept using our past experiences to aid us in interpreting other
responses. How can you help others develop positive self-image or positive
self-concept?
❖ The only thing I can advise is that the only person that truly knows you
is no other than but yourself. Never change yourself to please others,
“just be you”. You are better in your own ways, but it does not mean
that you should not listen to what others say to you. But instead
getting angry at him/her, that as criticism to be better. And if you go
change, don’t let be hatred be the reason for the change, you need
to grow as someone you can be proud of.

3. What additional concepts of the self-did you learn from the video?
❖ According to Cooley, once’s self takes time to develop self begins to
develop after birth and continuous throughout a person’s life through
the following stages: imaging, interpreting, and developing self-
concept.

4. Anthropology is concerned with how cultural and biological processes


interact to shape the self. Both biological and cultural factors have
significant influence in the development of self. Illustrate this with an
example from your own personal life. Which is a biological influence and
which is a cultural influence in you? Explain your answer.
❖ My sister and I are really part of the same family. We have the same
parents and we definitely look alike, but our personalities are so
different. This is because even though we have a similar genetic
makeup, our external environment also plays a substantial rule in

5. Give concrete proofs of ethnocentric and xenocentric behaviors. On


which concepts are these behaviors rooted.
❖ Cultural variances are significantly more pervasive than cultural
universals, not with standing how much humanity has in common.
while all civilizations share a common language, clos examination of
specific language patterns and conversational etiquette reveals
significant variances. In several middle Eastern societies, it is
customary to converse while standing near to others North
Americans maintain a larger “personal space” and preserve their
distance. Even simple things like eating and drinking differ drastically
form one culture to the next. When people try to overcome
ethnocentrism and create cultural relativism they can go too far on
the opposite end of the spectrum the view that another culture is
superior to one’s own is referred to as xenocentrism, which is the polar
opposite of ethnocentrism after experiencing what they consider to
be a more upright or noble way of life an exchanging student
returning home after a semester abroad r a sociologist returning from
the field may find it difficult to relate with the values of their own
society.
