“Kate and Her Big Family”

Kate and Her Big Family


Kate and her friend wanted to put
on a play. They needed room to
practice. Kate’s mom was in the
living room. Her sisters were in
the bedroom. Her dad was in the
kitchen baking a cake.
“Mom, can we play in your
room?” asked Kate.
“No, Grandpa is napping,” she
said. “There are too many people
in this family,” said Kate.
Then Kate had an idea. She got
some sheets. The girls went
outside. They made a tent with
the sheets. They practiced in the
tent.
Then Kate’s family came to see
their play. They cheered and
clapped. Kate smiled at everyone.
“I’m glad I have such a big
family,” she said.

For example: Janeth went to the


market to buy some vegetables and
fruits. Basically, the person or the
character who takes part in the
sentence is Janeth, so she considered
as the character. Is that clear class? Yes, Ma’am.

Another example: Nolie is playing in


the park.
Who is playing in the park? Nolie, Ma’am.

 The setting is the place and
time in which the story happens. It
answers the questions where and
when.
For example: At 4:00 o’clock in the
afternoon, Jhonabel is planting a tree
in their backyard.

When did Jhonabel plant? 4:00 o’clock in the


afternoon, Ma’am.

Where did she plant? In their backyard, Ma’am.

Exactly.

 The plot is the sequence of events


of a story. It consists of the
beginning, the middle, and the
ending.
 Beginning – it catches the reader’s
attention. The characters and setting
are introduced in this part.
 Middle – it presents the events
and details about what happens to
the characters.
 Ending – it shows how the
characters change or are different
than they were at the beginning of
the story. This part also gives
solution to the problem.

“CHILDREN OF THE CITY”
by Amadis Ma. Guerrero

The story revolved around eight year


old Victor, a son of a dockworker
and an unemployed mother who
lived in the shanties. The story
started when his father got involved
in a strike, because the workers
believed they were being robbed
their fair share of compensation by
the higher-ups. Victor, innocent and
unknowing, just went along because
he wasn’t that informed of how the
world worked yet.
During one of the strikes, in an
unfortunate turn of events, Victor’s
father got shot, along with many
others. That moment was the catalyst
of how Victor’s life would turn out
to be. They held a funeral in honor
of his father, and his mother grieved
for a while. She moved on in a short
span of time when she finally
brought home another man who was
nothing like Victor’s dad. She and
the man left home, claiming they
were going out on a “long vacation”,
and Victor was entrusted to his Tio
Pedring, who helped with his
employment as a newsboy.

His first few days were rough, but he


was finally getting the hang of it and
was getting a lot of newspapers sold.
He befriended Nacio, another
newsboy who is a so-called
troublemaker. He tried to do his best
at his job and was rewarded for the
hard work. He finally felt free and
happy when a sailor gave him two
pesos, giving him a tether of hope in
the world again. It was ripped away
because of Nacio’s death, and the
pressure put on to him by his fellow
workers. In the end, he succumbed
to the vices when he finally realized
how cruel the word is, and that no
one can really escape the harshness
of reality.

The turtle and elephant are friends.


One sunny day, the elephant invited
the turtle to walk on the other side of

“I have never been to the other side
of the river,” added the turtle.

The elephant laughed at the turtle,
“The water is just my knee level.
Don’t worry we will cross the river
safely,” the elephant assured the
turtle.

Lisa asked her brother Ali while they
were having breakfast.
“I guess it was from the window,
Lisa,” Ali quickly answered. He
hurriedly went to the window to see
what it was.
“Lisa, look!” Ali shouted as his eyes
opened wide with what he saw.
“Kuya, what was that?” Lisa
exclaimed.
“It is a bird that fell off!” Ali
shouted.
“What happened to the bird, Kuya?”
Lisa asked.
“I think it felt cold that is why it
cannot move,” Ali said to his
sister. Ali and Lisa went closer to the
bird and dried it off. Ali got a shoe
box and put a soft cloth in it.
He gently put the bird inside the box.
“The bird has gotten tired
because of the heavy rain since
last night,” Ali explained.
“It needs to rest and dry up,” he
added. They took care of the tired
bird. Lisa always peeks inside the
box to check the bird.
“Let’s be quiet so that the bird
can rest well,” Ali whispered to his
younger sister.
After a few hours, the tired bird
woke up.
“Kuya Ali! Come here! The bird’s
wings are now moving!” Lisa
happily yelled at her brother.
Ali hurriedly brought some water
and a small piece of rice to feed the
bird. The rain has stopped. Ali and
Lisa stood in front of the window
near the tree while holding the box
where the bird rested. They opened
the box and let the bird fly freely.
“Goodbye, little bird!” they
shouted. Ali and Lisa happily
watched the bird as it flew again.
