A SIMILE is a Figure of Speech which compares one thing with another, always including the words

“as” or “like”.

Example:

The principal roared like a lion when there was a food fight at school.

Explanation: The principal was really mad about the food fight, he screamed and scolded
the children so loudly that it sounded like a lion was roaring.

Other examples:

As busy as a bee

As hard as a rock

Sally moved as slow as a turtle towards the classroom, dreading her math test
A METAPHOR is a Figure of Speech that describes a person or object by referring to something
that is considered to possess similar characteristics. They usually include the verb “TO BE”.

Example: He is a night owl, he can only study after dinner.

Explanation: He is the type of person who cannot focus on his work during the day, so he
only works at night, just like owls do!

Other examples:

Ella and Sally were magnets, all the kittens seemed to stay very close to them.

Clyde´s room was a hurricane´s aftermath. There were toys and clothes everywhere.

The Sun was a gleaming pearl.
