List of tables
Under sluice bay is provided on the left bank and is located adjacent to the overflow weir. It is a
gated structure with breast wall provided above EL 1445.30. Vertical lift gate proposed has a opening
of size 4.0m (w) x 3.8m (h). Stilling basin is located downstream of the main undersluice structure.
Top level of the piers on both sides of the stilling basin portion is at EL 1447.0. Similarly the pier is
extended upstream and infront of the Intake structure to facilitate discharge into the intake and
through undersluice when gates are open. Top level of the extended pier is fixed at EL1451.0. Main
purpose of the undersluice bay is as following.
Facilitate discharge of part of the design flood if required
Flushing of bed load during flood.
Maintaining silt/debris free in front of the Intake by operating the gate intermittently or as per
operation manual.
1.2 Description
Proposed under sluice opening can discharge maximum 122 cumecs for reservoir water level at
EL1453.75, which is the maximum water level. Top level of the structure is fixed at EL1455.0 with a
freeboard of 1.25m. Gate shall be operated from the top slab at EL 1453.75. Total length of the
structure is 7.0m, which includes two no’s of 1.5m wide pier and 4m wide clear bay. Length of the
structure along the flow is 19m. Invert level of the under sluice is fixed at EL 1441.50. Breast wall is
provided to restrict the height of the gate to 3.8m. All the components of the main under sluice
structure such as raft, piers, breast wall, top slab are fixed to each other to make it behave as single
unit.
Undersluice bay consists of main undersluice bay structure, upstream extended pier and
downstream stilling basin with piers on both sides. Undersluice bay is reinforced concrete structure
constructed out of concrete of grade M25. To reduce erosion due to flow of high velocity of silt laden
water, top surface is laid with 500mm (minimum) thick high performance concrete og grade M60.
The structure is founded on river bed material having safe bearing capacity of 250kn/m2. Adjacent
structures Intake on the left and spillway on the right are not connected to under sluice, however the
joints between them are proposed to be provided with two layers of waterstops. All hydraulic
calculation have been presented in hydraulic report. This report includes analysis and design of the
components of the under sluice bay structure.
Some of the sketches of the under sluice bay are presented below.

Main under sluice structure including top slab, raft, piers and breast wall, undersluice bay in stilling
basin portion and extended pier have been analysed against all possible external loads. The results of
analysis obtained for different components of the structure have been used to design the
components by limit state method. Flexural and shear reinforcement have been calculated against
maximum bending moment and shear force for each component of the structure by using in house
spread sheets.

2. Material properties
2.1 System of units
The design is presented in units defined in the standard ISO 1000. SI units and their recommended
multiples are applied.
2.2 Materials
Backfill material should be self draining and cohesion less. Properties of the material considered are
presented below.

LIKHU KHOLA‐ A HEP ‐ Under sluice bay design report Revision No: 0
Foundation material is consisted of river borne material which is matrix of sand and boulders. Safe
bearing capacity of the foundation is considered as 250kn/m2. Accordingly modulus and poisson’s
ratio of the strata has been worked out by the standard formula as given in Bowles book and
adopted values are presented below.

The engineering property of these type of materials is assumed to be cohesion less with low angle of
internal friction. Further, the material is expected to be very permeable. From visual examination of
the material the following engineering parameter may be considered:
Cohesion (C) = 0

Following loads and forces are considered for the design of Under sluice Structure:
Dead load
Live load
Hydrostatic pressure
Active earth pressure
Uplift pressure
Earthquake load
It consists of self‐weight of the structure including the weight of end piers, intermediate piers, raft,
top slab and wall etc. Dead load is applied in the strand7 as gravity load considering density of
concrete as 24kn/m3.
A uniformly distributed live load of 10 kN/m2 is assumed to be acting on the top slab.
Hydrostatic pressure is calculated corresponding to the full supply level of 1451.0 and high flood level
of 1453.75. Figure below presents hydrostatic pressure diagram for A) Full supply level and B) High
flood level. Hydrostatic pressure varies linearly from top to bottom as shown in the figures.
11
LIKHU KHOLA‐ A HEP ‐ Under sluice bay design report Revision No: 0
Active earth Earth pressure is applied on left abutment/pier upto top of the backfill (EL. 1445.5 m). It
is proposed to use self‐draining material for the backfill. The properties of the backfill material used
for design is presented in the table above.

4.1.1.5 Uplift
Results of subsurface flow analysis has been used for calculation of uplift pressure. Linearly varying
pressure from upstream to downstream acts below the raft. Uplift is different for both normal and
flood case.
Nepal is located in high‐risk seismic zone. Therefore, it is considered that Project site is located in
Zone – V seismic zone (most severe earthquake zone as per IS 1893‐2016). Accordingly, seismic
parameters for zone V has been adopted for the design of the Under sluice structure.
Following values of seismic coefficients have been adopted for the design of Under sluice structure

Main under sluice structure is modelled as three dimensional solid finite element model in strand7.
All the components such as raft, piers, breast wall and top slab are modelled to the actual dimension.
However the curved portion at the upstream end of the piers are not modelled to avoid complicated
model. The structure is founded on the river borne material. The left bank of the under sluice is filled
with compacted backfill up to EL1445.50. On the right bank movement of the structure is restrained
by the spillway. FEM 3‐D model is presented below.
Under sluice structure primarily consists of piers, raft, top slab and breast wall. Each component is
designed based on the results of Strand 7 FEM analysis. All the components of under sluice are
designed by Limit state method conforming to IS456:2000.
4.3.1 Pier
Pier is subjected to earth pressure and seismic load in addition to self‐weight and forces transferred
from adjacent components. Earth pressure is considered saturated during normal operation and
submerged up to EL1444.50 during flood. Accordingly submerged earth pressure is applied on the
pier for flood case. Thickness of the pier is 1500mm.
Design forces (bending moment and shear force) are derived from Strand 7 cut section tool and
reinforcement worked out as per IS456:2000 using in house spread sheets. Reinforcement of 20T @
150mm c/c have been provided on both faces vertically and 20T @ 150mm c/c horizontally..

5. Extended pier
Extended pier is 1.5m thick and resting over 2m thick raft. Top of the pier is proposed at EL1451.0.
Main purpose of the pier is to divide the flow and facilitate flow into the intake.
Following loads and forces are considered for the design of the Structure:
Dead load
Hydrostatic pressure
Uplift pressure
Earthquake load
All the loads list above are explained in chapter 4. Only specific loads are explained below.
Net force on the stem due to Hydrostatic pressure during normal case is zero. However during flood
case 2m differential load has been considered which may arise due to turbulence and layout of the
headworks.
5.1.1.2 Uplift
Uplift load has been calculated by Khosla theory and presented in hydraulics report. Average uplift
5.0 m of water head or 0.049kn/m2 uplift pressure acts below raft for normal case.
