Abstract

This report is about measuring an object Hight by measuring vertical angle

by theodolite instrument with measuring the horizontal distance between
instrument and the object.
It had done in University of Duhok campus in civil engineering department
by second stage students. And the aim of this report and these angles is to
determine the height of object.

1 Introduction

Theodolite may be defined as the optical survey instrument that is used to

measure the angles between the specified points both in the vertical and
horizontal plane.

In other words, theodolite may be defined as the instrument fitted with a

small telescope that can move freely in the horizontal and vertical plane to
measure the horizontal and vertical angles in surveying.

It is widely used in traversing, land surveying and other infrastructure

construction.

2 Objectives

1. Setting up the Theodolite instrument.

2. Determining the height of objects using theodolite instrument by
measuring vertical angle.
3
3 Procedure

1. Setup the instrument at station P.

2. Perform all temporary adjustments.
3. Sight the top of the object A, and read the vertical angle.
4. Sight the bottom of the object B, and read the vertical angle.
5. Change the face of the theodolite and repeat the procedures 3 and 4,
and calculate α1 and α2 .
6. Measure the Horizontal distance between the instrument station and
the object (D) by tape.
7. Calculate the height of the object as follow:

h1 = D tan(α1)

h2 = D tan(α2)

The object height = h1 + h2

Booking Vertical Readings

Station Point Face Left Face Right Reduced FL Reduced FR

A 78° 08’ 15’’ 281° 48’ 58” +11° 51’ 45” +11° 48’ 58”
P
B 99° 32’ 25” 260° 28’ 49” -9° 32” 25” -9° 31’ 11’’

Vertical angle 1 = 90° - FL

Vertical angle 2 = FR - 270°

FINAL VERTICAL ANGLES

A = +11° 50’ 22” B = -9° 31’ 48’’

D = 8.57 m

h1 = D tan(α1) = 8.57* tan (11° 50’ 22”) = 1.80 m

h2 = D tan(α1) = 8.57* tan (9° 31’ 48’’ ) =1.44 m

The object height = h1 + h2 = 1.80 + 1.44 = 3.24 m

6 Discussion and conclusion

In this experiment we measured the vertical face left and face right for two
points to determine the height of object by calculate the vertical angles and
we measured the horizontal distance between theodolite instrument and
the object that we need to find the height of it by tape.

Then by calculation and computations we could find the h1 and h2 by tans

law and sum the h1 and h2 equal the height of object. That the object was
the column of civil department building of our college that the height of it
is approximately 3.24 m.

The aim of this experiment and this report is determining the height of
object by using digital theodolite instrument and by tape.
