KETTLITZ-Kezadol GR

Kezadol GR is a soft granule of 82.5 % calcium oxide coated with special dispersing agents to delay
reactivity and is used as a desiccant in rubber compounds which are cured pressureless (micro-wave
systems, LCM, hot air or fluid bed). Moisture which is present in all rubber chemicals, especially fillers,
will be absorbed and the calcium oxide will change to calcium hydroxide after reaction with the mois-
ture.

It is also possible to use Kezadol GR as an acid absorber e g. in systems containing chlorine. By re-
action of HCl (hydrochloric acid) with CaO, CaCl2 is formed. Therefore the corrosive effect of HCl on
metal parts (e. g. vulcanization molds) can be reduced. In addition CaO may suppress the creation of
nitrosamines [stated in the German rubber journal "Kautschuk - Gummi - Kunststoffe" 45 (1/1992) 18,
article by D. W. Chasar].

If calcium oxide powder preparations are used they react during the mixing process, and a higher dos-
age is required, which has a negative effect on the physical properties of the vulcanizate. Kezadol GR
is inactive during mixing but then reacts faster than other calcium oxide preparations, permitting
shorter standing time between mixing and extrusion. The most important point is that the dosage may
be reduced significantly, therefore the influence of CaO on physical properties of the compound is re-
duced and less storage time is required.

Kezadol GR granules are very soft so that the use and dispersion even in very soft rubber compounds,
e. g. sponge rubber, and on open mills will be fast and without any problems. CaO preparations in
paste form often harden on storage. This causes dispersion problems which will not occur if Kezadol
GR is used.

One of the reasons for the softness of Kezadol GR is that the dispersing agents used to produce the
granules have no melting or softening point. Easy dispersion will take place immediately after addition
to the compound.

The quality of the calcium oxide is important. Due to the fact that the forming of Ca(OH)2 by reaction of
CaO with water results in a two–three times higher volume, Kezadol GR contains an extremely fine
calcium oxide (average particle size 6–7 µm), free of coarse impurities with a screen residue for the
untreated CaO of:

> 45 µm = max. 0.1 %

> 150 µm = max. 10 ppm

Recommended use

Kezadol GR should be used in order to prevent blisters and porosity in the following rubber processes:

- Pressureless continuous curing systems like micro-wave, LCM, fluid beds or hot air
- Low pressure curing in the cable industry
- In compounds cured in heat transfer fluids or
- In cases where the influence of humidity in rubber compounds should be suppressed or
eliminated
Dosage

The dosage of Kezadol GR (82.5 % CaO) depends on the moisture contained in the compound. Usu-
ally between 5 and 10 % of CaO, related to the filler amount, are added to the compound. From this
relation it can be seen that for every part of water by weight expected in the rubber compound, approx.
4 parts of Kezadol GR are required in order to avoid blisters on profiles. An over-dosage normally influ-
ences the cross-linking; in this case please consider CaO as filler. There is also a risk of increase in
white specks, because remaining CaO reacts with humidity (surrounding), first Ca(OH)2 is formed and
later on CaCO3. We recommend the addition of Kezadol GR in the second mixing stage or on the open
mill.

Kezadol GR can be added to the compound together with the special packing, providing mixing tem-
peratures of more than 85 °C are achieved (melting range of the PE foil 60–85 °C).

Packing

For order quantities of minimum one pallet (1 big cardboard box of 500 kg or 64 cardboard boxes of 15
kg per delivery), Kezadol GR can be supplied in sachets containing any weight between 0.5 kg and
5 kg to suit customers’ requirements at no extra cost. Usually bag and content can be applied directly
to the mixer eliminating weighing and handling. Direct skin contact can be avoided to improve working
place safety.

Because of the special treatment of Kezadol GR it is not classified as an irritant. For further information
please refer to our safety data sheet.

KETTLITZ-Kezadol GR/DAB

Kezadol GR/DAB is a soft granule of approx. 77.5 % calcium oxide coated with special dispersing
agents. For delaying the reactivity of the CaO, our product is treated with special white oil corre-
sponding to BfR- and FDA-regulations. The additive used meets the requirements of the "European
Directive for Plastics" 2002/72/EG.

Therefore Kezadol GR/DAB can be used for the production of rubber compounds coming into contact
with food.

For other technical information concerning application of Kezadol GR/DAB please refer to the details
for Kezadol GR.
KETTLITZ-Kezadol PCI

Kezadol PCI is a surface treated calcium oxide powder for use as an effective desiccant with a CaO
content of approx. 89 %. The calcium oxide is coated by a chemically indifferent hydrocarbon. Due to
this preparation Kezadol PCI is less dusty and in addition there will be no unwanted reaction with hu-
midity.

The calcium oxide used for production of Kezadol PCI is extremely fine with an average particle size of
approx. 7 µm. This is very important because the Ca(OH)2 formed by reaction of CaO with water has a
2–3 higher volume. Therefore no white specks will occur when using Kezadol PCI. The CaO used is
free of impurities and shows only the following screen residues:

> 45 µm = max. 0.1 %

> 150 µm = max. 10 ppm

Application

Due to these excellent characteristics, Kezadol PCI can be used for every application where humidity
(brought in by raw materials containing water) causes unwanted reactions, e. g. for:

- PVC plastisols (for carpet underlay or car under seal)

- polysulfide- and silicone compounds
- 1- or 2-component polyurethane systems
- pigment colors containing solvents
- PP- and TPE-compounds (especially with high filler content)
- powder varnish

Dosage

The dosage of Kezadol PCI depends on the moisture content of the various compounds. Considering
the content of active CaO, four grams of Kezadol PCI have to be used to eliminate one gram of water.
