500 LB Manual Hoists
1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Purpose and Function
Our PF51-series of fishpole hoists are precision aircraft maintenance tools designed in
cooperation with leading aircraft manufacturers to perform rapid removal and installation
of aircraft components by the bootstrap method. The PF51-002, -003, -004, and -005 rep-
resent our standard lines of manual operated fishpole hoists. Select models feature an
overload device which prevents loading the hoists cable over a preset load limit.
2. SPECIFICATIONS
CAUTION
This hoists is designed for equipment lifting only. Damage to equipment can occur.
The following specifications are for the manual lift hoists (See Table 2.1).

3. INSPECTION
WARNING
Use of the hoists with a damaged cable may result in personal injury or death.
3.1.1 Inspect cable for frays, kinks, broken wires, or visible wear indicators.
3.1.2 Prior to cable wind, close Drum-Loc clutch handle and inspect Drum-Loc clutch by
gently pulling up to ensure it does not open. The handle will not open unless the
detent button is depressed.
3.1.3 Attach the cable to a minimum load of 15 lb. and rewind the cable ensuring it winds
evenly. Once wound, attach cable to clevis to retain tension.
3.1.4 Inspect all visible areas for corrosion.
3.1.5 Verify the proof load tag is up to date and has been properly serviced.
3.1.6 Inspect for missing or damaged parts.
3.1.7 Inspect to ensure cable is level wound on drum.

3.1.8 Inspect the ball fitting at the drum end by unwinding the cable from the drum and
pushing the end of the cable through the drum anchor slot to expose the ball.
3.1.9 Verify the hoists is clean and free from dirt accumulations, especially at working sur-
faces. The hoists should not be left exposed to inclement weather.
3.2 Periodic Maintenance Inspection (Every 6 Months)
3.2.1 The hoists should be disassembled and cleaned with Safety-Kleen or similar.
3.2.2 Components should be examined for wear or damage and replaced as required.
3.2.3 When reassembling the hoists, all components should be lubricated using Shell-
Alvania EP2 or Gadus S2 V220 2 extreme pressure chassis grease, which is
available from PF Fishpole Hoists, Inc.
3.2.4 The bevel gear cavity should have a small amount of high film strength lubricant,
such as Hilton Hyper-lube, added to the chassis grease to promote proper lubrica-
tion of these gears.
3.2.5 The hoists must be proof loaded at two times (2X) the working load after each
inspection (See Paragraph 5.3).
4. HOISTS OPERATION
4.1 Attaching to Equipment
4.1.1 Ensure hoists is perpendicular to load before applying tension.
WARNING
During operation, the hoists produces a noise level of 90 db. Hearing pro-
tection is required. Failure to comply can result in hearing damage.
CAUTION
Twisting of the hoists when loading the cable can pull the cable off the end
of the pulley and pinch it between the pulley and fork fitting causing it to not
work properly. To counter this, PF Fishpole Hoists, Inc. offers a cable guide
assembly that can be attached. Damage to equipment can occur.
4.1.2 Always wind the hoists according to the direction arrow stickers.
CAUTION
Winding the cable in the wrong direction will cause damage to the cable and
tensioner system. Damage to equipment can occur.
4.1.3 If direction arrow stickers are missing, the cable always winds to the top of the drum.
4.1.4 If the hoists locks while in use, the overload mechanism has been engaged. Further
torque to the handle will damage the unit.
3

4.1.5 Reverse direction and look for the cause and after correcting, resume slowly lifting
load.
4.2 The Drum-Loc Clutch
CAUTION
Do not force the clutch handle closed or attempt to engage or disengage the
clutch handle with any tension on the cable. The handle will not close if the key
slot is not properly aligned. Damage to equipment can occur.
4.2.1 To operate the Drum-Loc clutch for rapid payout or retrieval of the cable, the hoists
must be free from load.
4.2.2 To unlock the clutch, align the clutch handle key with the slots in the housing cover
and rotate the clutch handle clockwise then counterclockwise and lift the handle into
the disengaged position.
4.2.3 For rapid payout, the cable should be pulled from the hoists. For retrieval, use the
clutch handle just opened.
4.2.4 To re-engage the clutch, turn the clutch handle until it aligns with the key slot and
rotate the handle to the stored position.
4.3 The Overload Device
4.3.1 The optional overload device is preset at the factory to limit the maximum allowable
cable load.
4.3.2 When the load is exceeded, the cable drum is positively locked to prevent further
load increase. This device does not operate when lowering a load.
4.4 To Change Hoists Barrels (See Figure 4.1)
4.4.1 Loosen and remove bolt (-9), nut (-10), and nut (-26).
4.4.2 Loosen barrel clamp bolt (-40) and barrel clamp nut (-26).
4.4.3 Withdraw barrel from housing and barrel clamp. Insert new barrel through the barrel
clamp and into the housing.
4.4.4 Insert bolt (-9) and tighten nut (-10). Pull on barrel (as if to draw it) to stop and then
tighten barrel clamp.

NOTE
Barrel clamp is part of optional load limiter and is present only on select
models.
5
500 LB Manual Hoists
CAUTION
Always remove any load from cable before loosening the spring adjusting
bolts and pull barrel to stop before retightening barrel clamp. Damage to
equipment can occur.
a. Test: Operate the hoists as if raising a load until the load on the cable exceeds
the limiting load and the cable drum is locked. If the resulting load on the cable is
within the desired limit for each of three such tests, the hoists is acceptable for
service. If the load limit readings obtained above are either too high or too low
read adjusting procedure.
b. If the load is too high: Loosen the barrel clamp bolt and loosen the spring
adjusting nuts (equally) to increase the length of the load springs. Pull on barrel
(as if to draw it) to stop and then tighten barrel clamp. Tighten the barrel clamp
bolts and repeat the test above.
c. If the limit is too low: Loosen the barrel clamp bolt and run down the spring
adjusting nuts (equally) to decrease the length of the load springs. Pull on barrel
(as if to draw it) to stop and then tighten barrel clamp. Tighten the barrel clamp
bolts and repeat the test.

5.3.1 The hoists should be proof loaded either in accordance with the users established
procedures or once every 6 months during normal service conditions and upon
entry into service following extended storage periods.
5.3.2 To proof load, hang the hoists using the end fitting from a suitable fixture and apply
a 1000 lb. (453.6 kg) load to the hoists cable for a duration of 3 to 5 minutes for each
of the following two arrangements:
a. Arrangement #1: Cable completely unwound from drum.
CAUTION
Between proof loads wind cable correctly with 15-50 lbs. of weight attached
as stated before and shown in the illustration below. Damage to equipment
can occur.
b. Arrangement #2: Cable completely wound on drum with approximately 5 to
10 ft. (1.5 to 3.0 m) of cable left exposed from the barrel.
WARNING
Do not use the hoists as a cable loading device for loads in excess of
500 lb. (226.8 kg) load. The Drum-Loc clutch must be locked for both
tests. Death or injury to personnel can occur.

5.4 Storage
5.4.1 The hoists is stored and shipped in a heavy duty storage case to prevent damage.
Keep this case, as it is used to ship the hoists back to the manufacturer for
recertification.
5.4.2 While hoists is in frequent use, store the hoists in the supplied box/case in an area
protected from such elements as dirt, sand, water, and extreme heat (above
120 degrees F (50 degrees C)).
5.4.3 When extended storage is required, remove all dirt and corrosion from the exposed
surfaces and refinish as needed.
5.4.4 Perform an annual maintenance routine and coat all working parts with a thin coat of
water resistant storage grease.
5.4.5 The hoists should then be placed in the supplied box/case and stored in an area of
low to moderate humidity with low temperature variations.
5.4.6 When the hoists is to be reintroduced into service, completely disassemble, remove
storage greases, and inspect all parts for corrosion.
5.4.7 Once hoists is found to be in good working order, lubricate and reassemble.
5.4.8 After each use, unwind cable out of hoists completely (or until all loose or uneven
cable is removed from drum). Attach cable end to clevis and rewind evenly on the
drum by applying approximately 10 to 15 lb. (4.5 to 6.8 kg) of tension on the cable.
NOTE
The tensioner pad is only a partial guide. Use a screwdriver or other tool if
necessary, to move the cable into position when rewinding.
