ACCT 116A: Financial Accounting - CRN #54477- 4 Units

Welcome to Accounting 116A Financial Accounting. I am looking forward to an interesting

semester with you covering one of the most important areas of business – the numbers.
My goal is to help you understand the principles behind the numbers and the reasons why
a good understanding of accounting is important to every business.

My name is Dawn Diskin, and this is my ninth year here at Miramar as a full-time faculty.
Prior to this exciting new role, I was a practicing CPA primarily helping small to medium-
sized companies with all aspects of their accounting and financing issues primarily using
QuickBooks. This course continually builds on previous material, so it is important that at
any time in the class if you are not understanding the material get assistance sooner rather
than later.

You can e-mail me with your questions or schedule a time with me for help or tutoring services which are FREE at the
Academic Success Center by the Library. Please don’t wait until later when it will be harder to make up for lost ground. I
want you to be successful in this class and have an enjoyable experience while improving your knowledge, marketability
and achieving your own personal goals for taking this course.

Course Description
116A Financial Accounting 4 Units Prerequisites: None Face-to-face M106 MW 8:55am-11:00 am

The purpose of this course is to develop an understanding of the information contained in the financial statements. It
explores what financial accounting is, why it is important, and how it is used by investors and creditors to make decisions.
The course covers the accounting information system and the recording and reporting of business transactions with a
focus on the accounting cycle, the application of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), the preparation of
classified financial statements, and financial statement analysis. This includes issues relating to asset, liability, and equity
valuation, revenue and expense recognition, cash flow, internal controls, and ethics.

The course topics covered in the course include purposes and uses of accounting information; the accounting cycle;
cash and accrual accounting; internal controls; financial reporting rules and disclosure; current assets; current liabilities;
long-term assets; long-term liabilities; stockholders’ equity and reporting requirements; measuring cash flow; financial
statements and statement analysis; and ethical issues.

This class consists of lectures and online homework bolstered by realistic multimedia presentations, exercises, problems,
and class discussion boards. Pertinent ethical, technological, environmental, socioeconomic, and international issues
may be integrated into the class discussions as the situation warrants. All discussion board questions including the class
summary and autobiography are in Canvas.

It is important for the student to view accounting from a broader scope. Accounting can be a vibrant, exciting career that
offers opportunities in areas like entrepreneurial, e-commerce consulting, financial statement analysis, and forensic
accounting. In addition, accounting graduates are always among the most recruited at the end of the semester and
salaries have been continually rising lately.

better yet, email me from the Canvas Inbox as it notifies me of your specific class.

Office Hours: Via Zoom Monday 11:00 am-1:00 pm, Tuesday and Thursday 7:45-8:45 am and 11:00 am-1:00 pm at M-
107-K. My classroom is M-106 so look for me there on Mon-Thurs if not in my office. I am available on-line on Sundays
from 6 pm to 8 pm. I will respond to emails within 48 hours, probably sooner. Please be sure that your full name, contact
information, and the section you are enrolled in are included on any messages or e-mail that you send me or use the
Canvas email messenger.

Prior to community college instruction, I had taught graduate school accounting classes and CPA review classes. I
attended Arizona State University for my undergraduate degree in Accounting and San Diego State University for my
MBA in Finance. When I was in college, candidates could take the CPA exam before graduating, which was what I did
and am happy that I passed and was able to focus on my career and not worry about studying and learning a new job at
the same time. My career experience includes public accounting in the audit department at KPMG San Diego and
Assistant Controller at Wells Fargo Bank, before venturing off to the smaller, privately held organizations. Before I started
teaching full-time, I had a financial consulting business servicing small, entrepreneurial companies in San Diego, so I am
very familiar with business practices and QuickBooks.

Course Content
HOMEWORK: In accounting, new concepts build upon those that have come before. It is essential that you keep current
in this course. A good rule of thumb is to expect at least eight to ten hours reading the material, viewing videos, and
completing homework and exams. Homework assignments are designed to help you practice new skill sets and to learn
the key concepts that accompany them. All homework and exams will be completed in My Accounting Lab (MyLab),
which is especially helpful to on-line students because it offers a variety of tools like Help Me Solve This, Demo Docs,
and Ask My Instructor. Help Me Solve This is a step-by-step explanation of a very similar question that can be worked
through before completing the actual homework question. Demo Docs is an auditory demonstration of how to complete
a summary question that pertains to the homework question you are working on. It allows you to jump to any section of
the summary question it is covering. Ask My Instructor is an email system that shows the instructor the exact window a
student is viewing when the email is sent. Students may attempt homework an unlimited number of times before the due
date and MyLab will record the highest saved score. If at any point in the semester you experience technical difficulties
with Pearson’s My Accounting Lab, please contact them via the web at www.MyAccountingLab.com and go to Support
Tab, under Student Support.

Homework is worth a total of 220 points. Students can reset homework as many times as they choose. MyLab records
the highest “saved score” if students make multiple attempts at answering questions. Some questions in MyLab are
static, which means they are identical to the textbook, and everyone has the same question. Other questions are “similar”
which means the names, numbers, and solutions change from student to student and each time a question is reset.

It is your responsibility to complete the homework assignments on time. Late homework will be accepted with a 10%
penalty up until the exam date for that respective chapter. In order to ensure your maximum grade and learning benefit
from the homework assignments, I would urge not to wait until the last minute to submit your assignments. Allow yourself
a cushion prior to the deadline and avoid the stress of something malfunctioning hours before the assignment is due.
There is a direct correlation between success on the exams and diligent effort on the homework. By seriously attempting
to solve the HW problems, you will learn the material.

PREP HOMEWORK- To assist with learning the material easier, there will be homework on the current chapter due
before the main portion of homework. You will be required to read the chapter before the week starts and do some of the
easier homework problems prior to Sunday when homework is due. It is important that everyone have some exposure to
3
the material and attempt the problems early in the week and work on the material several times throughout the week, so
you can grasp the concepts easier and get your questions answered before starting the harder homework problems.
Accounting is like a foreign language in the beginning. Worth 10 points per chapter for Chapters 1-11. Prep Homework
can be turned in late with 10% penalty by Sunday at midnight the week that Chapter regular homework is due. Total
points of prep homework are 110 points.

EXAMS & STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (SLO): There will be three exams in this class worth a total of 270 points
and the SLO is broken into three parts worth 120 points in total, within MyAccountingLab. The exams cover the chapters
noted in the Weekly Schedule. The exams will be a mixture of multiple choice and short problems and will be based upon
the media assignments, homework, practice quizzes/exams and readings. Both the multiple-choice section and the short
answer part of exams are taken on-line in MyLab. Additionally, two practice exams are offered for 5 points each. The
practice exams simulate the settings of the actual exam so students can become accustomed to the test setting and
working on the problems without the assistance of Help Me Solve this and Check My Work tools within the My
Accounting Lab system. No make-up exams will be given so it is imperative that you take the exams as scheduled.
Failure to take an exam will result in being dropped by instructor. You are not allowed to view the eBook from MyLab
during the exams, so again, I highly recommend you purchase the text, so you can have access to your book during
exams.

QUIZZES: There are five quizzes throughout the semester to ensure you are grasping the material prior to the exams.
Quizzes will be administered in class on paper or in MyLab and no more than 4 students per group. These are a great
learning experience for all and quite fun. There will be no make-up quizzes, but plenty of extra credit to fill in for a missed
quiz and lowest score can be dropped. . There is also a Syllabus Quiz the first week within Canvas, this is taken
individually.

DISCUSSION BOARDS: Our first discussion board is a brief introduction or autobiography so we can all get to know
each other. There also is an open discussion board, the Cyber Café, which is an open forum for students to exchange
ideas on any class related topic or tips or hints on challenging areas of the homework.

EXTRA CREDIT: Every semester at the end of the semester, students inquire about extra credit, when it is often too late.
So, for this class, extra credit will be available from the start. Students can earn extra credit by attending the Miramar
Business club meetings and other pre-approved networking events related to business or accounting. Additionally, MyLab
has a section called My Study Plan, which is designed to assist students in areas that they need the most help. The use of
My Study Plan is not required, it is strictly optional and for extra credit. The extra credit earned will be based upon the
hours of participation and points of mastery in My Study Plan. Usually there is not extra credit offered unless your hours
in My Study Plan exceed 10 hours. There will also be a feedback survey for extra credit in the Discussion board toward
the later portion of semester and two Practice Exams count as 5 points each of extra credit.

DUE DATES: The due dates for all assignments and the scheduled dates for lecture topics, reviews, and exams are
clearly listed on the Weekly Schedule and on each Weekly button in Canvas.

Course Rules & Expectations

ATTENDANCE:
Attendance is mandatory at a community college. It is the instructor’s discretion to withdraw a student after the add/drop
deadline due to excessive absences. Please be respectful of everyone and arrive to class on time. Students who arrive
late to class cause disruptions and adversely affect the learning process for all.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS:
Students are expected to:
• Access their email and the Canvas class site several times per week (minimum of 3 times per week).
• Put your name and the class CRN number in the Subject Line on all email submissions to the instructor.
• Complete and submit assignments according to the instructions and the syllabus schedule
• Take full responsibility for knowing the requirements, rules, deadlines, and activities.
• Do not ask for exceptions to the rules and do not wait until the last minute to submit assignments.
• Share their knowledge, participate, and assist other students.
• Complete and submit original work, and act and behave ethically, honestly, and politely throughout the course.

4
COURSE CALENDAR:
The weekly calendar for this course is listed below as part of the syllabus and also within MyLab the weekly assignments
appear when you log in. The course calendar identifies specific assignments, exams, and due dates. You are to complete
the assignments for each week generally on your own time schedule within that week. You may read ahead, but you will
only be able to respond to the discussion boards and submit assignments during the current week. Your first priority is to
be sure all assignments are completed on time. Do not fall behind. Each lesson builds on the previous lesson’s concepts
and materials.

STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO DROP CLASSES:

1. It is the student’s responsibility to drop all classes in which he/she is no longer attending and complete all necessary
paperwork if they decide to withdraw from class
2. It is the instructor’s discretion to withdraw a student after the add/drop deadline.
3. Students who remain enrolled in a class beyond the published withdrawal deadline as stated in the class schedule will
receive a letter grade in this class, and it may not be the grade you wanted.

INSTRUCTOR INITIATED DROPS: The instructor must take strong steps to ensure all students are “attending” and
active. Therefore, the Instructor retains complete discretion to process a Withdrawal (Drop) for students without
additional notice (unless discussed with Instructor and approved in advance) for failure to participate and complete all
assignments weekly as required by the due date on the syllabus schedule.

INSTRUCTOR RESPONSIBILITY: No matter how experienced and knowledgeable I am about the subject matter; I am
always learning too. My job is to set up a good format for learning the subject and make myself available as needed to
assist in the learning process. I expect students to read the syllabus and all other course-related documents and
announcements, to know the class rules and deadlines for submissions, to complete the assignments timely, and to take
responsibility for compliance. I welcome creative ideas and suggestions from students, so I can learn and improve as well.

INCOMPLETE GRADE: Students seeking an “Incomplete” grade must consult with the instructor in person no later than
the week prior to finals. Incomplete will only be considered for emergency or other unforeseeable justifiable reasons at the
end of the term, and only upon agreement of clear conditions for completing coursework. Incompletes are rarely granted
and only if the emergency or other unforeseeable justifiable reason occurs after the date for dropping the class. Work,
vacation, family concerns, class schedules, time management problems, and other normal issues that all students deal
with do not qualify.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: It is expected that in all manners related to this course you will act in an ethical and professional
manner. Unethical behavior consists of giving or receiving help on individual or non-group assignments, representing
someone else’s work as your own, copying or giving answers during exams and quizzes, or giving or receiving information
about exams and quizzes with other students. If a student is caught cheating on an exam or quiz, he/she will receive a
zero for that activity and may not take make-up.

Some examples of cheating might include wandering eyes, use of unauthorized notes, talking during the exam or quiz, or
leaving the classroom during the exam too often or for an extended period of time. For more details see Miramar
College’s Catalog for further guidelines regarding the school’s policy on this topic.

CODE OF CONDUCT: Students must abide by San Diego Community College’s Student Code of Conduct.

Success Tips
PLAN FOR SUCCESS:
1. Due dates for each assignment are listed in the Weekly Schedule and on the front page of Pearson’s MyLab.
2. Use Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox as your default browser. You may need to disable any pop-up
blockers, look for notification toward the top of your screen.
3. Depending on your accounting background, experience, and knowledge (if any), this 4-unit course will
generally take approximately 16-20 hours of study time and homework participation per week depending on
your individual situation.
4. Plan your schedule to complete all in a timely manner and leave room for computer issues or family or work
issues so you don’t run in to last-minute problems.
5. It is up to the student to understand/comprehend the syllabus, course calendar, use of Canvas, and My
Accounting Lab (MyLab). Any questions should be addressed with the instructor as soon as possible.
6. Assignments are completed either in My Accounting Lab (MyLab) or in Canvas. All assignments are due by the
date noted on the course calendar.
7. Late assignments (accepted only up until the upcoming exam date) will have a late penalty of 10% deducted.
No exceptions, no excuses.
8. Exams may include multiple choice, fill-in, short answer, true false and problems. Exams must be taken on the
date noted in the course calendar. There are NO MAKEUPS for exams or quizzes.
9. Changes are sometimes necessary and will be made at the discretion of the instructor. Notice will be given to
the students through email, or with an announcement on the course Canvas site. Make sure to regularly view
the Canvas Announcements because it is your responsibility to know and apply any changes.
10. Respectful communication is required. Please use proper and respectful tone in all emails and on-line posts. The
instructor reserves the right to remove inappropriate posts. Any disrespectful communication will be addressed.
6
Historical Evidence Although it is difficult to predict individual student performance, students who do well in this course
generally do the following: never miss a class, read the chapters before coming to the class, do all the homework, take all
the quizzes and exams in a timely manner.

Supplemental Information

1. Syllabus Quiz (20 points)– Just to be sure you have read through the syllabus and have a good
understanding of what is required and how the class operates, there is a 10-question quiz in Canvas Under
Week 1 Orientation. The quiz is worth 20 points and you can take it as many times as you need to get 100%
correct. (Due Sunday Week 1)

2. Student Autobiography Discussion Board (20 points) – Post a two-paragraph autobiography about you on
the Discussion Board in Canvas. In the first paragraph tell us how many overall units you have completed and
how many accounting classes you have taken, including online or on campus classes. Tell us about your work
experience and computer experience. Tell us why you are taking this class and what you want to learn from this
class. In the second paragraph explain what challenges or concerns you have about this class. For example,
you're not proficient at using software or have never taken an online class. Also, tell us about your strengths.
For example, you have used MyLab for several courses. Finally, tell us about your likes, dislikes, or hobbies.
(Due Sunday Week 1)

3. Discussion Questions (40 points) – We will have two discussion boards related to chapter material – one for
Ch 6 and one for Ch 10 each worth 20 points. There is also the Cyber Café discussion area where I encourage
virtual classroom participation and helping out your fellow students. You can just comment, help each other
out, give advice, ideas, suggestions, and caution warnings for challenging material.

4. Five Quizzes Each 20 points over 2 chapters at a time drop lowest (80 points)– Prepare for quizzes by
reading and outlining the textbook plus completing the homework. Group Quizzes are taken in class together
and you will randomly be assigned groups. Some may be on paper and some within MyLab, they vary.

5. Prep Homework (11 Chapters at 10 points each, total 110 points) To assist with learning the material
easier, there will be homework on the current chapter due before the main portion of homework. You will be
required to read the chapter before the week starts and do some of the easier homework problems prior to our
class meetings so you will be able to work problems in class together more effectively. Worth 10 points per
chapter for Chapters 1-12, except Ch 6 and 12. Prep Homework can be turned in late with 10% penalty by
Sunday at midnight the week that respective chapter’s regular homework is due.

6. Homework problems (220 points) Chapters 1-11 – Homework problems are completed in
MyAccountingLab (MyLab). Each chapter has an individual due date. The due dates are listed in both
MyLab and in the syllabus. If there is a discrepancy, please email me and I will recheck. MyLab deducts 10%
for each late homework question. For details see “Schedule of Homework Assignments” in the syllabus. No
late homework is accepted after the midterm due date for that section.

7. SLO #1 Chapters 2-4 (60 points). Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) #1 is based on creating journal entries,
posting journal entries to the ledger, and creating trial balance sheets. There is one problem from each chapter
listed. They are problems from your text, so a bit longer than the exercises. SLO #1 can be taken twice and
MyLab will record the highest score. Students have 3 hours (180 minutes) to complete each attempt. SLOs are
in MyLab under the Assignments/take a Quiz/Test Menu. (Due Week 6)

8. Exam #1 (50 points) – Exam #1 covers chapters 1,2,3,4 in the form of multiple choice and fill in the blank
questions. Since the SLO #1 covers problems related to Ch 2,3&4, there will be no Short Answer portion of the
Exam as there will be for Exam #2 and #3. The Exam will be taken in the classroom on the computers. Locate
exams in the Assignments/Take Quiz/Test in MyLab. (Due Week 6)

9. Exam #2 (120 points) -Midterm #2 covers chapters 5, 7, 8 and is 6 short answer problems and some
multiple-choice questions for a total of 120 points. Exam will be taken online in MyLab. YOU CANNOT

10
EXIT AND REENTER THE MIDTERM so allocate the appropriate time a day or so BEFORE the deadline.
Locate exams in the Assignments/Take a Quiz/Test in MyLab. (Due Week 11)

10. SLO #2 Chapters 2, 4 & 11 (60 points) SLO #2 is based on the four financial statements- the Income
Statement, the Statement of Retained Earnings, the Balance Sheet, and the Cash Flow Statement. There is one
problem from each chapter listed. SLO #2 can be taken twice, and MAL will record the highest score. Part A is
over Ch 2&4 so you can take it earlier if you wish as the end of the semester is a busy time for all. Part B is over
Ch 11, so don’t attempt until chapter 11 is completed. (Due Week 15)

11. Exam #3 (100 points total) – The final exam covers chapters 9, 10, 11, 12. You can take the short answer
portion twice and MAL will record the highest score. If you exceed the time limit points are deducted. YOU
CANNOT EXIT AND REENTER THE FINAL EXAM. Locate exams in MyLab under the Assignments/Take
a Quiz/Test Menu item. Due Week 16 on Saturday night - Note this is a Saturday NOT Sunday.
