Sheet # 2 – AC Voltage Controller
1- A single-phase AC voltage controller consists of two back-to-back thyristors has a
resistive load of R = 10  and the input voltage is Vs = 220 V at 50 Hz. The
thyristors are switched on for n = 25 cycles and are switched off for m = 75 cycles.
Calculate the following:
a. The rms output voltage
b. The input power factor
c. The average and rms current of the thyristors

2- A single-phase full-wave AC voltage controller has a resistive load of R = 10  and


the input voltage is Vs = 220 V at 50 Hz. The firing angles for the two thyristors are
90and 270o, respectively. Calculate the following:
a. The rms value of the output voltage
b. The input power factor
c. The average and rms current of the thyristors

3- A single-phase full-wave ac voltage controller controls power flow from a 230 V,


60 Hz ac source into a resistive load of 4 Ω. The maximum desired output power is
10 KW. Calculate:
a. the maximum rms current rating of thyristors,
b. the maximum average current rating of thyristors ,
c. the peak current of thyristors, and
d. the peak value of thyristor voltage

4- A single-phase ac voltage controller supplies RL load of R=20Ω and L=50 mH


from 120 V rms, 60 Hz supply. The delay angle is 90°. Determine:
a. an expression for load current for the first half-period,
b. the rms load current,
c. the rms thyristor current,
d. the average thyristor current,
e. the power delivered to the load, and
f. the power factor.
5- In a single-phase controlled synchronous connection changer, the primary voltage
is 240 V (rms), 60 Hz. The secondary voltages are V1 = 120 V and V2=120 V. If the
load resistance is R =10 Ω and the rms load voltage is 180 V, determine:
a. the delay angle of thyristors T1 and T2,
b. the rms current of thyristors T1 and T2,
c. the rms current of thyristors T3 and T4, and
d. the input power factor (PF).

6- A three-phase full-wave controller supplies a Y-connected resistive load of R =10


Ω and the line-to-line input voltage is 208 V (rms), 60 Hz. The delay angle is α =
π/3. Determine:
a. the rms output phase voltage,
b. the input power factor, and
c. the expression for the instantaneous output voltage of phase a.

7- Three-phase bidirectional delta-connected controller has a resistive load of R =10


Ω. The line-to-line voltage is 208 V (rms), 60 Hz, and the delay angle is α = 2π/3.
Determine:
a. the rms output phase voltage,
b. the expression for the instantaneous phase currents,
c. the rms phase and line currents
d. the input power factor, and
e. the rms thyristor current.
