JUSTIFICATION
Increase in accidents and incidents in the months
Crew member got metal dust in eye when using chipping/air gun
Crew member got metal dust in eye when grinding
Crew member got washing water in eye using light safety glasses
All incidents could have been prevented had proper Safety goggles
been worn.
We have the correct Safety goggles onboard for grinding. When
grinding metal dust can bounce off other surfaces and strike you at
an indirect angle
Safety googles are to be used when washing
outside with high pressure equipment.
EYE Protection
• It is compulsory to wear eye protection during all operations, work tasks,
painting, use of chemicals, inspection and service etc.

• The only exceptions are when in a protected accommodation area, bridge,

and galley when not conducting a maintenance task.

• Crew members that wear prescription glasses can order prescription

safety glasses through the PO system. (Internal Memo 2015)

• Visitors must wear Safety glasses in Compulsory PPE area.

• Cleaning/Demisting stations must be available in compulsory PPE areas

to clean and demist safety glasses.

• Shaded safety glasses should be used when sunlight is a hazard during

an operation. At no time should shaded safety glasses be used at night.
Working with Tools

When performing exposed work (e.g grinding, burning, chipping, high pressure washing,
chemicals, etc) proper Eye Protection has to be worn, such as safety goggles, face shield
or similar, according to the Risk Assessments recommendation. Light safety glasses does
not give sufficient protection in these situations as they open all the way around.
