Being an Irregular student and a returnee student in one as well has never been a piece of cake. The post
pandemic set up of online classes is yet an unfamiliar one for me. But with all the latest technology and skills
that you can acquire (with what and how pandemic taught us to be resilient) Online learning became a piece
of cake and easy like ABC’s. Science, Technology and Society or better known as STAS is part of the new
curriculum set by the College of Nursing in Our Lady of Fatima University. I was indeed part of the old
curriculum, and it was not introduced back then. But fortunately, an excellent professor was assigned to our
section. I joined the College of Tourism class through her online classes. An experience I would include in my
journey of academics. Learning STAS111 becomes untroubled and tranquil. Science, Technology, and
Society (STAS) is an interdisciplinary discipline that studies the interplay between scientific knowledge,
technological systems, and societal situations. Studying STAS yields numerous crucial insights: Science,
technology, and society are all interdependent. Science, technology, and society interact in intricate ways.
Scientific discoveries propel technological progress, which in turn alters social structures and cultural
norms. For example, the introduction of the internet has transformed communication, business, and
education, radically changing how civilizations operate. Technological Independence vs. Social
Constructivism: Two prominent philosophies explain how technology affects society. Technological
determinism holds that technology evolves independently of societal concerns and then shapes society.
Social constructivism, on the other hand, holds that social forces and human decisions influence technical
advancement. Understanding various points of view allows us to examine the broader consequences of
technological advancements. I’ve learned that ethical considerations also advancements in science and
technology frequently pose ethical concerns. For example, genetic engineering and artificial intelligence
raise important ethical concerns about privacy, security, and the meaning of human beings. STS promotes
critical thinking regarding the moral duties of scientists and engineers. Technological advancements may
increase socioeconomic disparities. The digital gap, which separates people who have access to current
information and communication technology from those who do not, is an important issue. STS investigates
methods to promote fair access to technological benefits while addressing disparities. Based on what is
taught it also shows that effective governance is required to manage the effects of science and technology on
society. This includes developing rules that promote innovation while protecting the public interest, such as
data protection legislation and environmental regulations. There were a lot of public engagements. It is
critical to engage society in conversations concerning scientific and technological breakthroughs. Public
participation ensures that technical improvements reflect society ideals and solve public concerns, resulting
in more democratic and inclusive decision-making processes. Above everything else, the study of Science,
Technology, and Society sheds light on how scientific and technological achievements shape and are shaped
by social dynamics. It emphasizes the significance of considering ethical, equitable, and policy-related
elements when developing and implementing new technologies, creating a more inclusive and mindful
approach to innovation. It was indeed a fun learning experience, and an excellent and knowledgeable
instructor was all behind the learning we had. Because of it our views were widened and lightened up on how
this learning will affect our activity daily living. Thank you.
