ABSTRACT
Prior, the Ratburi Limestone was proposed for the Permian carbonate rocks those
were widely exposed in Thailand. The Ratburi Group has been named according to its
corporate the clastic formation. Later, the Ngao Group, the Saraburi Group, or the Pha Nok
Khao /Nam Maholan Formation were characterized based on their singular lithology,
stratigraphy, deposited period, diversified fossils, and their different tectonic significant.
The present Ratburi Group has been named for restricted predominantly Permian
carbonate rocks in the Shan-Thai, covering the western range, southern Thailand/peninsular,
and islands regions. According to previous literatures and additional results on investigation in
Kanchanaburi and Suratthani areas, an approximately 560-610 m thick of the Ratburi Group
has been characterized in to 5 formations in ascending as the Thung Nang Ling, the Khao
Muang Krut Sandstone, the Phab Pha, the Phanom Wang, and the Um Luk Formations,
respectively. The group is conformably underlain by the Khao Phra Formation of the Kaeng
Krachan Group and is un-conformably overlain by the Klong Min or the Lam Thap Formation
of the Thung Yai Group. The upper boundary of the group is not implying a relationship to
the Triassic Chaiburi Formation. The 4 carbonate and a clastic lithofacies have been also
categorized. They are thick bedded encrinite, thin to medium bedded limestone, massive
limestone, and limestone with discontinuous bedded and nodular chert related the
formations.
Comparative research on Permian strata and fauna between West Yunnan and West
Thailand by Thai-China cooperation indicated the Ratburi Group is ranging in age from
Roadian to Wuchiapingian, based on fusulinids and brachiopods identification. According to
lithofacies characteristic, stratigraphic relation and paleontologic evidences, suggesting epeiric
platform model and depositional environments of warm water in low latitudes on the
passive margin of a cratonic area.

Reference
(Phanom Wang Formation)
Middle Permian
