What Is a Linear Differential Equation?

The linear differential equation is an equation having a variable, a derivative of this

variable, and a few other functions.

EXAMPLES:

1. d/dx+ Py = Q
2. dy/dx + y = Cosx

A linear differential equation can be recognized by its form. It is linear if the

coefficients of y and all order derivatives of y are constant terms only.
CHARACTERISTICS OF LINEAR DIFFERENTIAL EQUATION

we identify all linear differential equations on our list that have constant coefficients:

y′−exy+3=0 has order 1,

is linear, is non-homogeneous, does not have constant coefficients.

y′−exy=0 has order 1,

is linear, is homogeneous, does not have constant coefficients.

METHODS

Methods of solving linear differential equation For finding the solution of such
linear differential equations, we determine a function of the independent
variable let us say M(x), which is known as the Integrating factor (I.F). Now,
using this value of the integrating factor, we can find out the solution of our first
order linear differential equation.

USES OF LINEAR DIFFERENTIAL EQUATION IN CIVIL ENGINEERING

Linear Differential Equations are used to determine the motion of a rising or falling object with
air resistance and find current in an electrical circuit.
