Introduction
• Parthia is an ancient land corresponding roughly to the modern region of
Khorasan in Iran.
• The Parthians ruled from 247 BCE to 224 CE, creating a vast empire that
stretched from the Mediterranean in the west to India and China in the east.
• East of the Caspian Sea there emerged from the steppe of Central Asia a nomadic
Scythian tribe called the Parni.
• Later called the Parthians and taking over the Seleucid Empire and fending off
the Romans, they established themselves as a superpower in their own right.
• The Parthian Empire was founded by Arsaces I of Parthia, when he rebelled
against the Seleucid Empire

• The Parthian kingdom had its reach from Turkey to eastern Iran.
• The largest of these sub-kingdoms, the Indo Parthian kingdom, located west of the
Parthian homeland, was founded in the late 1st century BC by Gondophares, who
was a Scythian (Saka) king
• Their first capital city was Taxila in present- day South Central Pakistan.
• Later they shifted their capital city to Kabul and Peshawar.

• The Indo-Parthians, another branch of the Sakas, established their rule in northwestern
India, particularly in the regions of Gandhara and Mathura.
• Their rule overlapped with the Indo-Scythians, and they existed from the 1st century
BCE to the 3rd century CE.

• The Parthians, known for their skilled cavalry and archery, had established the Parthian
Empire in the western part of the Iranian Plateau before extending their influence
eastward into parts of present-day Afghanistan and Pakistan.
• The Indo-Parthians, led by Gondophares, were among the first Parthian rulers to expand
their rule into the northwestern regions of the Indian subcontinent.

The real founder of Parthian rule in India was Mithrodates I (171-130 BC).

• In many ancient Sanskrit texts, they are mentioned together as the Shaka-Pahlava.

Gondophares
• Gondophares at around 19-46 AD, made conquests in the former Indo-Scythian
kingdom, perhaps after the death of the important ruler Azes.
• Gondophares became the ruler of areas comprising Arachosia, Seistan, Sindh,
Punjab, and the Kabul valley.

• Coins of Gondophernes, some bearing his Indian name Guduphara, indicate that he
may have reigned supreme over both eastern Iran and northwestern India.
• According to an inscription at Takht-i-Bhai (near Peshawar), Gondophernes ruled for
at least 26 years, probably from about 19 to 45 CE

• In Gondophernes reign Saint Thomas came to India to propagate Christianity.
• he was one of the 12 apostles of Jesus
• Some historians have linked Gondophares-I to St. Thomas.
• However, the recent researched connect 4th ruler of the indo Parthians called
Gondophares-sases, with St. Thomas.
• The church of Kerala has a tradition that St. Thomas came to India to spread the
Christianity and established the Ezharappallikal, or ”seven and half churches in India”.

• In due course of time, the Parthians, like the Shakas, became assimilated into Indian
society and became an integral part of it.
• The Kushanas ultimately ousted the successors of Gondophernes from north-west
India

• Later, the name or title Gondophares was adapted by Sarpedones, who
become Gondophares II and was possibly son of the first Gondophares.

• Uniformity was given more priority in the clothing in the Parthian empire.
• The belted tunic, as well as the trouser-suit, received more popularity at the end
of the 1st century BCE.
• Along with this, loose-fitted clothing consisting of numerous pleats also gained
fame.

• The personal look of Parthians involved a puffed hairdo of medium hair length
protected with a hairband.
• The Parthians used to have lengthy moustaches with detailed groomed beards.

Religion
• Unlike the Indo-Greeks or Indo-Scythians, there are no explicit records of Indo-Parthian
rulers supporting Buddhism, such as religious dedications, inscriptions, or even
legendary accounts.
• Also, although Indo-Parthian coins generally closely follow Greek numismatics, they
never display the Buddhist triratna symbol (apart from the later Sases) nor do they ever
use depictions of the elephant or the bull, possible religious symbols which were
profusely used by their predecessors.
• Hence, they are thought to have retained Zoroastrianism, being of Iranian extraction
themselves.
• Further, Coins of the Hindu deity Shiva have also been found issued in the reign of
Gondophares I
