Tutorial #3 Free convection

a) Derive the expression of the heat transfer coefficient h for laminar

convection of air at temperatures close to 25°C along an isothermal vertical
plate as a function of the height H of the plate and the temperature difference
T between the plate and the air.

b) Consider the free convection heat transfer between an isothermal vertical

plate at 20°C of height H=0.5m and air at respectively 10°C, 0°C and -20°C. Is
the convection for each of these temperatures laminar or turbulent? Calculate
in each case the value of the heat transfer coefficient.

c) Calculate the Grashof, Prandtl and Nusselt numbers as well as the heat
transfer coefficient for water at 20°C along an isothermal vertical plate of
height 0.5m at a temperature of 60°C. Is the convection laminar or turbulent?
Calculate the value of the heat transfer coefficient.

Thermal expansion coefficient for liquid water:

T (°C) 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 90
*103 0,08 0,2 0,3 0,38 0,45 0,53 0,58 0,64 0,67
