Project Background

Viral hepatitis in India is increasingly recognized as a serious public health problem. Despite
significant progress in the availability of treatment, access to diagnosis remains a major challenge
in the path to elimination. The estimated prevalence of HCV infection in India is 1–1.9%, with 12–
18 million people infected. HCV disproportionately affects people living with HIV (PLHIV) and
people who inject drugs (PWID). PWID are a priority population for enhancing prevention, testing,
linkage to care, treatment and follow-up care in order to meet World Health Organization (WHO)
hepatitis C elimination goals by 2030.

FIND will conduct Hepatitis C elimination through screening followed by confirmatory HCV
diagnosis among PWIDs in 7 districts of Haryana. The intervention will target specific sites
within these districts, aiming to reach an estimated ~3000 PWIDs throughout the project
duration. The experience gained from working in these 7 high-prevalence districts will help
establish the capacity to expand HCV diagnosis and treatment coverage to other districts
beyond the project period. Furthermore, in collaboration with PGIMER Chandigarh, an
operational feasibility and usability study of the novel HCV test will also be conducted.
