Section 1: Multiple Choice Questions [1 Mark per Question]

Write the correct option in the box

1.

2.

3. A ball is projected with velocity 10 m/sec at angle of 30o with the horizontal surface. The speed of
the ball after 1 second will be (Use g=9.81m/s/s)

9.8m/s 4.9m/s 9.8√2m/s 4.9√2m/s

4. A ball is projected with velocity 10 m/sec at angle of 30o with the horizontal surface. The maximum
height attained by the projectile is

5m 10 m 15 m 1.2 m 20 m

5. A passenger standing in a moving bus, facing forward suddenly falls forward. This can be an
indication which of the following?

A. The bus speeds B. The bus slows down

C. The bus doesn’t change its velocity D. The bus turns to the right

In the diagram below, a block of mass m slides down an inclined plane with a constant speed at an
angle θ with respect to the horizontal. Use this diagram for questions 6 through 10.

6. What is the x-component of the gravitational force?

mg cosθ mg sinθ mg tanθ mg Zero

7. What is the y-component of the gravitational force?

mg cosθ mg sinθ mg tanθ mg Zero

8. What is the normal force applied to the block?

mg cosθ mg sinθ mg tanθ mg Zero

9. What is the kinetic friction force applied to the block?

µmg cosθ µmg sinθ µmg tanθ µmg Zero

10. Which of the following is true about the coefficient on kinetic friction?

µ = cosθ µ = sinθ µ = tanθ µ = mg Zero

Section 2 : Answer the following questions

1. Three blocks A, B and C are connected as shown in the figure. Block A is placed on a rough
(friction) horizontal surface and connected to block B by a massless rope. Block B is lying on a
frictionless inclined plane and connected by a rope of negligible mass to block C. If the acceleration
of the system is a = 2.8 m/s2, as shown in the figure, determine

(a) Draw the free-body diagram for each block identifying all forces

(b) The tension T1

(c) The tension T2

(d) The coefficient of kinetic friction k between

block A and the horizontal surface

A) For Block:
mCg −T1=mCa

T1= mCg − mCa

= 5(9.8−2.8)= 35N

B) frictionless inclined plane:

T1 −T2− mBgsin36.9o=mBa

T2 = T1 − mBa − mBgsin36.9o

= 35− 3*2.8 − 3*9.8*0.6 =8.96N

C) Horizontal Surface

T2 −frA=mAa

8.96−k*2*9.8=2*2.8

k= 0.17

2. A projectile is fired toward the rock of a height h with a speed of 25 m/s and an angle of 50 degrees
above the horizontal. The projectile is observed to land on the top of the rock 3.5 s later.

(a) How high is the rock?

(b) What is the maximum height of the projectile?

(c) What is the magnitude and direction of the projectile’s velocity just before it landed on the top of
the rock?

(d) What is the horizontal distance between the projectile’s launch point and landed point?

3. The figure shows a train of two blocks being dragged across a floor where coefficient of dynamic
friction is 0.700 the masses are m1= 2.00 kg and m2= 4.00kg.and the acceleration is 5.00m/s/s. what
is the magnitude (N) of the horizontal applied force F causing the acceleration?

4. A stone is thrown vertically upward with an initial speed vi from the edge of a cliff of height h
meters above the ground, as shown. If the stone stays in the air for 5.0 s and at the end of this time it
hits the ground with a speed of 34.3 m/s, using the value of g = 9.8 m/s 2

a) Calculate the initial speed vi. of the object

b) Determine the height of the cliff h.
c) How long does it take the stone to reach a point 2.45 m above its
release point? Explain your answers?

Vf = −34.3 m/s ttotal = 5 s

a) vf = vi −9.8 t 3 points
−34.3 = vi −9.8 *5

vi = 14.7 m/s

b) y = vit −1/2* 9.8 t2 3 points

= 14.7 *5 – ½*9.8 *52

h= |y| = 49m

c) y = vit −1/2* 9.8 t2 3 points

2.45 = 14.7 t – ½*9.8 t2 Use the quadratic formula to

simplify and rearrange this equation

2t2 −6t + 1 = 0;

t = 0.18, 2.82s

t = 0.18 s is the time needed by the stone to pass the point on its way
up. ½ point

t = 2.82 s is the time needed by the stone to pass the point on its way
down. ½ point
