1.0 Where to buy a sim card in Malaysia?

2.0 Plan Options


There are two options in Malaysia for phone plans – prepaid and postpaid.

Prepaid Prepaid users have to recharge and use the plan on a real-time
basis.
For international students, prepaid options are highly
recommended because of the convenience of registration and
competitive pricing of prepaid packages.

Postpaid Postpaid users are charged at the end of the monthly billing
cycle.

Mobility students may have issues subscribing to a postpaid


plan because you do not have a permanent visa and bank
account for registration.

3.0 Plan Recommendations

3.1 Hotlink

Plan Options
Hotlink has 2 categories of prepaid plans— Fast and Unlimited.

General Information
Hotlink is owned by Malaysian telecom giant Maxis Communications. Maxis is one of
the leading phone companies and rivals Celcom as one of the most widely available
phone companies in Malaysia in terms of 4G coverage and availability.

3.2 Celcom

Plan Options
Celcom has 2 categories of prepaid plans: Limited and unlimited

1. 7 unlimited plans (refers to comparison below for more)


2. 2 limited high-speed internet plans
a. RM 35 (30GB High-Speed Internet)
b. RM 45 (40GB High-Speed Internet)

General Information
What makes Celcom unique and somewhat unrivalled is their network coverage
throughout Malaysia. According to their press release, Celcom’s 4G population
coverage rose to 93%.

All unlimited plans get a fair use policy (FUP) limit of 60GB per month. Once you’ve
hit the FUP limit, speeds will be throttled to 512kbps until the next pass renewal.

3.3 Digi

Plan Options
For Digi, there are 7 kinds of monthly subscription prepaid plans.

General Information
You can just tell the SIM card promoter to choose when you select your SIM card
subscriptions.

But for Digi, all the subscription plans are not unlimited internet. Based on the price,
They will provide different amounts of high-speed internet.

3.4 U Mobile

Plan Options
U Mobile has 2 prepaid plans namely U25 and U35.

General Information
U25 and U35 provide unlimited data and calls. Both plans subject to Fair Usage
Policy (FUP).

However, they have a special student U35 package which offers better deals
through the Made for Uni Campaign

Please be informed that Made For Uni U35 plan with U Mobile is applicable for:

1. Malaysian or non-Malaysian students of public or private higher learning
institutions registered under the MoHE. UM is one of the universities which are
eligible for this campaign.
2. Aged between 18 to 24 years old during the Offer Period with valid NRIC or
passport
3. Residing in Malaysia
4. Have a valid university/college issued email address

Before registration for this package is made, please ensure to buy a U Mobile
sim pack first then activate the sim using your details.

The Offer will be automatically terminated on the earlier to occur of


1. the expiry of 4 years from the date of the Registration; or
2. the subscriber turning 24 years old

4.0 Registration process

Your passport is required when purchasing a prepaid sim card. The purchased
prepaid sim cards in Malaysia are activated within minutes. It is advised to directly
put the new sim card in your phone and see if it works before you leave the store so
that if there is any issue you can refer to the staff. Also ask your provider how to check
your balance and remaining data bundle.
