INDICATION / ADVERSE EFFECT
INDICATIONS:
Ceftazidime is indicated for the
treatment of lower respiratory tract
infections, skin and skin structure
infections, urinary tract infections,
bacterial septicemia, bone and joint
infections, gynecologic infections,
intra-abdominal infections (including
peritonitis), and central nervous
system infections (including
meningitis) caused by susceptible
bacteria.
CONTRAINDICATION:
Ceftazidime is contraindicated in
patients who have a history of
immediate hypersensitivity reactions
(e.g., anaphylaxis, serious skin
reactions)
Colitis
toxic nephropathy
hepatic dysfunction including
cholestasis, aplastic anemia,
hemorrhage.
NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES
● Checked Doctors order
● Evaluated patient’s hearing before and during therapy
and notified prescriber if patient has tinnitus, vertigo,
or hearing loss.
● Weighed patient and reviewed renal function before
and periodically during therapy.
● Prepared the appropriate dosage as ordered.
● Double checked the medications before going to the
patient.
● Instructed the significant other to promptly report all
adverse reactions, especially change in urine, weight
gain, edema, hearing impairment, fever, diarrhea, and
abdominal pain.
● Instructed patient to notify prescriber about rash, loose
stools, diarrhea, or evidence of superinfection.
