SDT1: Defensive & Responsible Driving Course

Many of Australia’s largest companies now require staff to undertake regular Defensive Driving
Courses as part of their employment. Safe Drive Training offers a full day course which involves a
mixture of lectures, video presentations, demonstrations and numerous in-car driving experiences to
enhance participant’s active driving skills and road safety awareness.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
 To encourage the driver to be more aware of their responsibilities for the safety of themselves,
their vehicle and other road users.
 To highlight the limitations of car control skills (skill failure experiences) in avoiding crashes and
therefore promote alternate defensive driving strategies/techniques. The driving exercises conducted
are to teach limits….. not skills. We are not teaching your staff to be racing drivers.
 To reduce the fleet running costs and excessive vehicle wear and tear, through safe driving practices.
 To assist employers in complying with their obligations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act
and/or Government/Industry requirements in relation to the operation of fleet vehicles.
There are several theory sessions conducted across the day, which cover the following topics:
Defensive Driving: Proactive “Defensive” Strategies Risk Awareness and management
Contributing Factors in Crashes Road Law and Common Errors Buffer Zones/Cover Brakes
Driver Attitude and Behaviour Vision Skills Daytime Running Headlights
Hazard Perception Overtaking Procedures Seating/Steering Techniques

Vehicle Setup: Tyre Maintenance Vehicle Loading (Loose cargo)

Driving Dangers: Night Driving Distractions (inc mobile phones)
Fatigue Management Drink Driving (includes Beer Goggles) Freeways (Dangers & Tips)
Sharing the road with Trucks City Driving Hazards Country Driving Hazards
Crashing (How to crash) Animals Bad Weather (Storms, floods)
Parking (Do’s and Don’ts)
Vehicle Technology: ESC (Electronic Stability Control) ABS Brakes (Anti-lock Brakes)
SRS Air Bags Cruise Control (correct usage) Seatbelts (correct usage)

There are several practical sessions conducted across the day, which cover the following topics:
EMERGENCY BRAKING AND ABS AWARENESS EVASIVE RESPONSE SKILLS & LIMITATIONS
IMPROVED CORNERING TECHNIQUES IMPROVED VISION SKILLS
SPEED/VEHICLE CONTROL/VEHICLE DYNAMICS VEHICLE STOPPING DISTANCES

The driving exercises conducted are to teach limits….. not skills. We are not teaching your staff to be
racing drivers but rather reinforcing the need to adopt safe and defensive driving habits.

“The driver training went well, David delivered a thorough package as per his experience, the guys learned a lot and Dave
was very low maintenance - set and forget. Very smooth” Mark Lawson, Talisman Energy (PNG)
“This is just a quick response - I'm out at the Surat Basin in the oil and gasfields all week and internet access is limited
and difficult. I had intended to send a thank you and follow-up on the course. From our point of view it was a great success
and met our expectations. Feedback from everyone who attended has also been very positive. And the course, as
facilitated by Denis was well done. He was very informative and instructive.” Trevor Love, AUSSAFE

“Regarding the training that you provided to us back in 2008, since the course there have been no accidents as a result
from reversing. I can honestly say there has been a marked improvement in accidents altogether. Thanks so much for
your help.” Kym Nunan-Squier, Human Resource Manager, Maroochy RSL Club
“Everyone was thrilled with the training. Not only was it highly educational and also a lot of fun.” Aimee Munro

SDT 2: Advanced Car Control Session

This session is designed as a follow-up Stage 2 Driver
Training Course to be completed within 2 years of a
Defensive course. It is also beneficial for staff who drive
during winter, in areas which encounter frost, black ice
and snow (ie. New England region, Southern Highlands,
Victoria and Snowy Mountains).
Are your driver’s prepared and adequately trained?
This course utilises skid pans (in locations where such purpose-built facilities exist) or for other
locations a new revolutionary driver education product called Skid Tyres is used.
Skid Tyres are a Scandinavian invention that involves
applying a special patented plastic low friction surface to
normal road tyres reducing the co-efficient of grip enabling
drivers to understand how a car will react in a low traction
situation and be taught how to anticipate and control the
situation. The vehicle is stable at speeds up to 30km/h but
at speeds above this the tyre breaks traction providing the
perfect driver training scenario at low overall speeds.
Safe Drive Training is the exclusive distributor of Skid Tyres and these tyres allow us the
convenience of conducting skid control training on any sealed surface including airport runways,
taxiways, closed roads, car parks and at motorsport venues without the need for purpose built skid
pans. Skid Tyres offer many advantages including the accuracy of the simulation of low grip
conditions, ease of portability and use, very low noise emissions and the use of normal cars but most
importantly they do not require fast or aggressive driving to replicate slippery conditions.

Advanced Car Control Training using Skid Tyres can be delivered

as a full day or half-day course. CALL US FOR QUOTE

due to work pressures and performance expectations. Many multinationals have banned
mobile phone use in vehicles. All participants will receive a Phone Condom, this practical
zip-up PVC bag reminds mobile phone users to zip-up phone distractions while
driving. When the phone is in the bag, the message couldn’t be clearer “Park Your Phone,

Watt, Senior Safety & Risk Advisor, Origin Energy (Adelaide)
“We have had the first of our two Safe Driving Lecture sessions and I heard our staff in the corridors talking about this
training, they have especially been commenting on the presenter. They are saying that he is a brilliant presenter, "he is
really passionate about what he is doing" and "knows what he is talking about". Staff have been very positive about
attending the course. Thanks SDT!!!” Lesley Raetz, AQIS
“The driver training program shows that we are experiencing a sustained and significant reduction in the rate of light
vehicle accidents. This is a very encouraging result! This program is clearly making our workplace safer. I am sure that it
has made us safer drivers away from work as well, with benefits for families of drivers and the community in general”.

“I just thought that I would let you know that I have received nothing but positive feedback about Friday's safe drive training
course. Participants thought that each part of the course was informative, fun and worthwhile and that the instructors were
fantastic.” Melanie, Heart Foundation, Brisbane - Australia
“Regarding the driver training in Bangladesh for our company, just letting you know that the course proved to be quite
beneficial and we were particularly impressed with the SDT trainer’s realistic attitude and willingness to tailor the program
to suit the prevalent conditions. He proved to be the ideal person to conduct the course, ensuring maximum benefit was
gained by all drivers. If we require further defensive driver training on future projects, we will be sure to contact your
organization again. Thanks.” Dave Stegemann, PT. Grant Geophysical, Jakarta - Indonesia
“It has been a pleasure to conduct business with you. Everyone has given great feedback and been very appreciative of
the opportunity.” Ray Windridge, Health Safety and Environment Manager, Queensland Sugar Limited
“Approximately a year ago, our entire company attended a defensive driver training course at Willowbank, which was very
well received and it is now part of our policy that all staff members should undergo this course.”
Melanie Wright, Condamine Alliance, Toowoomba - Australia
“Firstly, I wish to express our appreciation in your teams professionalism & guidance on Tuesday. Everyone thoroughly
enjoyed themselves, as well as learning lots of important things about driving safely. Your instructors are a credit to your
organisation. They were all extremely helpful, patient and friendly towards us all. Both groups got heaps out of the day.
The Defensive group are already talking about when they will do the Advanced course. The Advanced group are
wondering what they can do next?” Peter Moeser, Austrade, Brisbane - Australia
“I would like to let you know that I had a fantastic time on Friday – not only was it informative but also very fun. Ian the
main presenter did a fantastic job at making what could have been a very dry subject very interesting, entertaining and
educational. The mix of practical and theory was enjoyable and broke the day up so that most the information will stay with
me for a long time. Thanks for organising and well done to whoever chose Safe Drive Training.” Melinda King, Runge
Limited, Brisbane – Australia
“Thanks for your training, even the training course was short (2 days), it helped us to have the knowledge about how to
drive safety & the attitude when driving also. Your practical lesson was unique for Vietnam, but it was very interesting &
useful for us.” ANH, Dao Thi Hong, Air Liquide (Vietnam)
“The feedback has been very positive! Thank you very much for the day I think everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves”
Jessica Collison, Energex, Brisbane – Australia
“The participants thoroughly enjoyed the training day. Made lots of jokes about everyone’s driving ability and found it very
beneficial for improving their driving skills. Many thanks.” Susan Hunter, BHP Billiton, Brisbane – Australia
“You will be pleased to hear the defensive driving day has had a real impact on the choices and decisions around how we
operate and maintain our vehicle fleet. I thought I was a reasonably safe driver before the course however I feel I am
much more effective now. Again, many thanks! Jamie Toth, Sentis
“Although I have been driving for the last 30 something years, it was very enlightening and was a great prompt of the bad
habits that we have gathered over the period. Learning to drive a lot further in advance of the vehicle than what I
previously did was difficult to change but now comes naturally, and skid control if you do get into the situation will be less
of an issue than previously. I recommend this for all Projects and also 4WD for remote sites where we predominately use
the 4WD’s” HSE manager, Ausenco
“The course was well received by all involved. All participants walked away with a better understanding of how our fleet
operate and learnt some new techniques. Thank you to you and your staff on the day. They were very professional and
knowledgeable. Thank you for your assistance.” Daniel McGaw, Ergon Energy
“The training went just great. Got some very positive feedback. One thing which has come up repeatedly is how Patient
and Friendly your training staff were to everyone. They were able to take those who were very nervous about the driving
exercises and put them at ease and back into control of their fear. Well done instructors. As the organiser from the Griffith
side I must say how much I personally appreciated the professionalism and the assistance of the SDT management.
Please pass on my thanks to them all.” Colin England, Griffith University
“Thanks for the recent defensive driving course. All the participants reported that the course was both very educational
and enjoyable. You will also be interested to hear that the business group won a WH&S recognition award from Griffith Uni
for introducing defensive driving for their staff. Thanks again for a great course” Scott Burnell, Team Leader, Griffith Uni

Why implement a Safe Drive Program?

Everyday your drivers advertise your company by the way they drive. They are operating dangerous
machinery (a motor vehicle) and doing so unsupervised. Just by being on the road, they put
themselves, the company vehicle and other road users at risk. Your company vehicle fleet and
drivers are expensive and valuable assets worthy of effective risk management.
These assets are at risk. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) and the National
Safety Council (NSC) recognise that road crashes are the most common cause of work related
deaths; injuries and absence from work in Australia. The average company car will crash once every
5 years and the average cost of each road crash is estimated at $18,500 (of which panel repair costs
are only a small part of the total expenditure).
Suddenly the safety of your fleet is worth considering. The true value of safe
driving will only become apparent when the real costs of bad driving are fully
understood. A driver’s licence alone does not make your drivers safe, afterall the road network
and vehicle technology is constantly changing but there is no updating or retesting of drivers. You
cannot expect people to drive safely unless they have been shown how and given reasons why.
Train them don’t blame them. In conjunction with Safe Drive Training, your organization can
introduce a SAFE DRIVING PROGRAM that provides cost effective risk management and meets
your OHS obligations.

Research has shown that the training methodology adopted by some advanced (post-licence) driving schools
is flawed. The courses introduce advanced/motor sport car control skills without addressing behavioural and
attitudinal changes in those gaining these skills. This in turn can produce drivers with greater confidence who
readily accept more risk; possibly leading to an increased level of crash involvement for course participants.
All Safe Drive Training courses are based on proven world’s best practice training techniques to
ensure participants improve their driving safety and ultimately become the best driver they can be.
