Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Petroleum Operations Ltd. (ADCO) intends to increase
crude oil production from current production rate of 1.4 Million Barrels Oil per Day
(MMBOPD) to 1.8 MMBOPD. This increase in production will be achieved by developing
different reserves (building block development) in ADCO fields.
ADCO plans to develop the new Thamama-A and Thamama-H zones in Bab field which,
along with other ongoing developments, will sustain the additional production of 400
MBOPD. At the same time, ADCO plans to develop the new Updip & Attic zone to sustain
the current production of 300 MBOPD from Thamama-B zone.
This project comprises the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) for;
• The Full Field Development (FFD) of Thamama-A, H, and B Updip & Attic surface
facilities.
• The surface facilities required to sustain the production of Thamama-B (Far North
(FN), Mid Dip (MD), and Down Dip(DD)), Thamama-G, Habshan-1, and Habshan-2.
The Bab field is located in a desert area, approximately 160 km southwest of Abu Dhabi
city (Ref. Figure 1.1). The field covers an area of approximately 45 km by 25 km. The
main processing facilities are located around Bab Habshan.
The field is sour with high H2S content. The wells to the northeast of Bab field exhibit
generally higher H2S content than wells to the southwest.
Bab injects aquifer water into the producing zones as the pressure maintenance strategy.
Associated water will be injected back to Thamama-B reservoir under ongoing project.
Associated gas separated at BCDS is delivered to GASCO for processing and processed
Crude Oil is pumped to ADCO export network.
The overall Objectives of the BAB Integrated Facilities Project are as follows:
• To create capacity for Th-H and Th-A new reservoirs to produce additional 15
MBOPD each as part of 1.8 MMBOPD building blocks.
• To sustain production from Th-B at 300 MBOPD by developing Th-B Updip and Attic.
The Bab Integrated Facilities Project Development Plan recommends phasing the
development of Bab Th-A, Th-H & Th-B UAD into two phases in terms of gathering
facilities and water injection system requirements only. Phase I shall cater for wells drilled
up to 2022 and phase II is for wells drilled beyond 2022 up to 2045.
Phasing is considered only for oil gathering and water injection systems requirements.
• Dewatering and disposal facilities for RDS-1, RDS-4,RDS-6, RDS-8 and RDS-9.

4.4 Sampling
The samples should be extracted from soil stratum for visual examination, for carrying
out various laboratory tests; for determination of engineering properties of sub-soils and
for logging of soil profile. Depending upon ground conditions (sand, silt, clay or rock);
suitable sampling techniques approved by COMPANY should be employed to obtain
variety of quality samples for appropriate laboratory tests.
Disturbed samples shall be obtained from the sampler at the top of each new stratum
and thereafter at 1.0 m intervals of depth.
Disturbed samples may also be obtained from the standard penetration test using the
split barrel sampler in accordance with ASTM D1586. Test sample retainers or trap
valves shall be inserted in the split barrel sampler where it is difficult to pick up samples
in sands and granular deposits.
Soil samples thus collected will enable determination of following soil properties:
Depths below ground level at which samples are taken should be recorded in boreholes
logs. Samples should be properly preserved, carefully transported to the laboratory such
that sample properties and integrity are maintained.
Samples shall be taken from each borehole where groundwater is encountered. One
