Study and examination regulations of the Fribourg School of Music for the cooperative
structured doctoral program of the Graduate School Fribourg Bern for Artistic Research

On the basis of § i9 paragraph i sentence z number 7 in conjunction with 9 38 paragraph 4 sentence


I of the Baden-Württemberg State Higher Education Act of January i zoos (G Bl. p. 1), which was
last amended by Article7 of the Ordinance of December zozi {GB1. zozz p. i, z December zozi
{GB1. zozz p. i, z), the Senate of the University of Music adopted the following examination and
study regulations at its meeting on June zz.zozz.
The Rector gave his approval in accordance with 9 38 AbS. 4 sentence i LHG on June zozz.

§Scope of application
(i) These study regulations govern the objectives, content and structure of the cooperative
structured doctoral study program within the framework of the "Fribourg Bern Graduate
School for Artistic Research", hereinafter referred to as the "Graduate School", which is
organized by the Fribourg University of Music (HfM) in cooperation with the University
of Music Bern (HCB).
(z) The HfM awards the academic degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) for this structured
artistic-academic doctoral degree program in accordance with the doctoral degree
regulations of the HfM (hereinafter: doctoral degree regulations) in the currently valid
version.

(3) Upon completion of this structured artistic-academic doctoral programme, the HCB awards
the academic degree of Master of Arts in the subject "Specialized Music Performance
I4lassik - Vertiefung Forschung". The study regulations and module plan of the HKB
apply. The Master's diploma m u s t b e marked with the note: "Obtained as part of the
cooperative doctoral program at the
"Fribourg Bern Graduate School for Artistic Research stated that this Master's degree was
obtained in connection with the PhD program

§z Purpose of the study and examination regulations

(i) The examination and study regulations regulate the admission requirements, the study
program and the examinations f o r students completing doctoral studies at the Graduate
School.
(z) Students at the Graduate School carry out their doctoral studies within the framework of
these regulations. The Doctoral Committee decides on possible exceptions after
consultation with the Director of the Graduate School.
§3 Admission requirements

(i) In principle, applicants for admission to the cooperative structured doctoral degree program
within the Graduate School are subject to the requirements set out in Section 3 (i) of the
Doctoral Degree Regulations. However, they must be able to provide proof of a relevant
Master's degree or an equivalent qualification. All applicants must pass the artistic aptitude
test for the Master of Arts in "Specialized Music Performance I4lassik - Vertiefung
Forschung" integrated into the doctoral degree programme at the HIEB. The admission
requirements laid down by the HCB apply.
(z) After passing the artistic entrance examination, the doctoral committee of the HfM decides
on acceptance as a doctoral candidate.
(3) Only those who have successfully passed the selection procedure by the selection
committee of the Graduate School as part of the aptitude test for the MA at the HCB can
apply for admission to the cooperative structured doctoral program within the Graduate
School. The composition of the management of the Graduate School is regulated in the
cooperation agreement between the HIEB and the HfM. The modalities of the selection
procedure are listed in Appendix C.

(4) The application for acceptance as a doctoral candidate must be accompanied by the following
documents
i. written confirmation from the Director of the Graduate School that the selection
procedure has been successfully passed. In accordance with Section z (3) of the
Doctoral Degree Regulations, artistic aptitude is determined by the selection committee
of the Graduate School;
e.g. the confirmation of supervision by the artistic s u p e r v i s o r ) and the
academic supervisor;

3. if necessary, proof of the foreign language skills required for the


work;

4. an exposé (max. io pages) on the doctoral project;


a copy of the Master's thesis or the diploma or state examination thesis or comparable
evidence of written scientific expertise;

6. a copy of the certificate of the last university degree (usually a Master's degree); 7-

a declaration of any previous doctoral projects;


8. a description of your artistic/scientific career to date (CV)
incl. list of publications (if available);

9. a list of CD and radio recordings, own publications and concert activities.


(s) The artistic supervisor takes part in the decision of the Doctoral Committee on the
admission of an applicant to the Graduate School.

the artistic supervisor, who also took part in the selection procedure, as a non-voting
member.

(6) The admission of an applicant to the doctoral degree program is formally confirmed by the
Chair of the Doctoral Committee.
(7) The head of the Graduate School decides on the recognition of coursework
completed before admission and its creditability for ECTS credits for the doctoral
program.

g 4 Standard period of study and scope of study


(i) The doctoral program comprises a standard period of study of 6 semesters including the
preparation of the dissertation, the defense and the artistic or artistic-academic
examination. The structured doctoral degree program also includes additional
coursework that must be completed during the course of study (see curriculum,
Appendix A). The additional coursework is usually completed as part of a Master's
degree program integrated into the doctoral program at the I4ooperation partner HIEB.

(z) The doctoral program/procedure includes the following contents:


i. The preparation of the dissertation and the defense;

z. Artistic degree in PhD;


3. The final qualifications as part of the Master's program integrated into the doctoral
program
4. The artistic subject (instrument, singing, composition, chamber music);

s. The research-oriented core subject

HSLU and HfM
(3) A total of i8o credits according to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation
System (ECTS) must be earned over the entire duration of the program (wo credits for
the MA at the HIEB and 6o credits for the doctorate at the HfM). The distribution is as
follows:
i. Scientific work (dissertation and defense) ss ECTS;

z. Artistic degree in PhD " 3 ECTS;


3. Final qualifications as part of the Master's program integrated into the doctoral
program (Master's thesis and performance) ECTS

4. Artistic core subject " 40 ECTS;


s. Research-oriented learning subject 37 ECTS;

6. theory seminars " s ECTS;


7Individual area to be taken with courses from the HCB or HfM " 30 ECTS.

és support
(i) Supervision within the framework of the study program i s p r o v i d e d by two
teachers: one academic supervisor and one artistic supervisor. Artistic and academic
supervisors must declare their willingness t o supervise the applicant in writing.

(z) All members of the HfM within the meaning of § z AbS.4-7 of the Doctoral Degree
Regulations are entitled to supervise in the cooperative structured doctoral degree program
as part of the Research Training Group for academic supervision. All full-time artistic
professors at the HfM and artistic lecturers at the HIIB are eligible for artistic
supervision. The Doctoral Committee decides on exceptions in consultation with the
Director of the Graduate School.

(3) The following support constellations between the contractual partners are possible:
i. Academic supervision by associated academic staff of the HIEB at the HfM and
artistic supervision at the HCB
z. Academic supervision at the HfM and artistic supervision at the HIEB

3. Academic supervision by associated academic staff at the HfM and artistic


supervision at the HfM

4. Academic and artistic supervision at the HfM


Enrollment in the Master's program at the HCB, which is integrated into the doctoral program, is
mandatory in all 4 cases.

§6 Academic achievements

(i) In addition to the general provisions in 9 4, certain subject-specific academic achievements


and their specific ECTS value are regulated by the provisions in Annex B of these
Examination and Study Regulations.

(z) Irrespective of the specific subject-specific regulations, the 4o ECTS in artistic teaching
correspond to weekly teaching of 7s minutes over the duration of 4 semesters at the HIEB
and weekly teaching of 6o minutes over the duration of 4 semesters at the HfM. How the
4o ECTS are to be implemented over the course of the 6 semesters must be agreed with the
head of the degree program and the head of the Graduate School and set out in writing. The
Vice-Rectorate for Teaching must be involved. The Doctoral Committee must be informed.
Artistic teaching usually takes place as part of the Master's degree program integrated into
the doctoral program at the Ilooperation partner HIEB. The exact teaching times depend on
the regulations there.
(3) Proof of competency must be provided for all coursework.

(4) The competent bodies of the two universities decide on the recognition of
coursework completed at institutions other than those listed in 9 4 and their
ECTS creditability in close consultation with the management of the Graduate
School. The Doctoral Committee must be informed.

g 7 Language of the doctoral program


(i) The seminar and teaching languages of the Graduate School are German, French and
English. Lecturers are authorized to teach in one of these three languages. Students' written
and oral work in the seminars shall be written in one of these languages in consultation
with the lecturers. The dissertation can be written in one of these three languages. The
corresponding language proficiency certificates for doctoral students and supervisors must
be observed.

(z) In accordance with Section 9 3 (s) of the Doctoral Degree Regulations, the dissertation
may also be written in an academic language other than German, French or English,
provided that supervision, assessment and evaluation are guaranteed. The disputation and
the artistic or artistic-scientific examination follow the same rules.

§ 8 Application for admission to the doctoral procedure

(i) The application for the opening of the doctoral procedure is generally made in
accordance with Section 6 of the Doctoral Degree Regulations. The application for
admission to the doctoral procedure in the cooperative structured doctoral degree
program must include

i. the title of the dissertation;


z. the applicant's address;

3. the names of the artistic and academic supervisors;

4. Proposals for the reviewers in accordance with Section 9 9 (i) of the


Doctoral Degree Regulations;
see program and/or description of the artistic or artistic-scientific examination;

6. proof of academic achievements in accordance with 9 4 of these regulations.


(z) The application must be accompanied by:

i. a description of the course of life and education;


z. four complete, bound (I4lebebindung) and identical copies of the dissertation as well as
one copy in digital form;
3. a declaration in lieu of an oath by the applicant that the dissertation was written
independently and in accordance with the rules of good scientific practice.
§ 9 Doctoral committee

(i) The composition of the academic doctoral committee is in accordance with Section 9 of
the Doctoral Degree Regulations. The academic doctoral committee in the cooperative
structured doctoral degree program within the Graduate School consists of

i. The academic supervisor;


z. Two further reviewers in accordance with Section 8 of the Doctoral Degree
Regulations. As a rule, one of the reviewers is a member of the HCB or HfM who is
authorized to supervise. It may also be an equal supervisor in accordance with Section
9 (i) of the Doctoral Degree Regulations;

3. the artistic supervisor as a non-voting member.

(z) The artistic doctoral committee in the cooperative structured doctoral


degree program consists of the following members:

i. The artistic supervisor;


z.One expert assessor from the HfM;

3. One expert reviewer from the BUA;


4. The academic supervisor as a non-voting member.

(3) If artistic supervision is provided by a lecturer at the HCB, the reviewer (paragraph z, point
3) must be a member of the HfM who is authorized to conduct examinations.

t4) T h e completion of the doctoral procedure is announced by the Director of the Graduate
School on the basis of the assessment of the dissertation, the minutes of the disputation and
the examination of the artistic performance. It can only be pronounced if both
I4committees consider the requirements to have been met.

g zo Overall assessment

The overall assessment is carried out in accordance with Section iz (z) of the Doctoral Degree
Regulations, whereby the "artistic achievement" mentioned there is to be equated with the
artistic examination.

§11 Entry into force, transitional provisions

These study and examination regulations and their annexes come into force on the day following
their publication in the official announcements of the Freiburg University of Music.
