Study and examination regulations of the Fribourg School of Music for the cooperative
structured doctoral program of the Graduate School Fribourg Bern for Artistic Research
§Scope of application
(i) These study regulations govern the objectives, content and structure of the cooperative
structured doctoral study program within the framework of the "Fribourg Bern Graduate
School for Artistic Research", hereinafter referred to as the "Graduate School", which is
organized by the Fribourg University of Music (HfM) in cooperation with the University
of Music Bern (HCB).
(z) The HfM awards the academic degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) for this structured
artistic-academic doctoral degree program in accordance with the doctoral degree
regulations of the HfM (hereinafter: doctoral degree regulations) in the currently valid
version.
(3) Upon completion of this structured artistic-academic doctoral programme, the HCB awards
the academic degree of Master of Arts in the subject "Specialized Music Performance
I4lassik - Vertiefung Forschung". The study regulations and module plan of the HKB
apply. The Master's diploma m u s t b e marked with the note: "Obtained as part of the
cooperative doctoral program at the
"Fribourg Bern Graduate School for Artistic Research stated that this Master's degree was
obtained in connection with the PhD program
(i) The examination and study regulations regulate the admission requirements, the study
program and the examinations f o r students completing doctoral studies at the Graduate
School.
(z) Students at the Graduate School carry out their doctoral studies within the framework of
these regulations. The Doctoral Committee decides on possible exceptions after
consultation with the Director of the Graduate School.
§3 Admission requirements
(i) In principle, applicants for admission to the cooperative structured doctoral degree program
within the Graduate School are subject to the requirements set out in Section 3 (i) of the
Doctoral Degree Regulations. However, they must be able to provide proof of a relevant
Master's degree or an equivalent qualification. All applicants must pass the artistic aptitude
test for the Master of Arts in "Specialized Music Performance I4lassik - Vertiefung
Forschung" integrated into the doctoral degree programme at the HIEB. The admission
requirements laid down by the HCB apply.
(z) After passing the artistic entrance examination, the doctoral committee of the HfM decides
on acceptance as a doctoral candidate.
(3) Only those who have successfully passed the selection procedure by the selection
committee of the Graduate School as part of the aptitude test for the MA at the HCB can
apply for admission to the cooperative structured doctoral program within the Graduate
School. The composition of the management of the Graduate School is regulated in the
cooperation agreement between the HIEB and the HfM. The modalities of the selection
procedure are listed in Appendix C.
(4) The application for acceptance as a doctoral candidate must be accompanied by the following
documents
i. written confirmation from the Director of the Graduate School that the selection
procedure has been successfully passed. In accordance with Section z (3) of the
Doctoral Degree Regulations, artistic aptitude is determined by the selection committee
of the Graduate School;
e.g. the confirmation of supervision by the artistic s u p e r v i s o r ) and the
academic supervisor;
6. a copy of the certificate of the last university degree (usually a Master's degree); 7-

the artistic supervisor, who also took part in the selection procedure, as a non-voting
member.
(6) The admission of an applicant to the doctoral degree program is formally confirmed by the
Chair of the Doctoral Committee.
(7) The head of the Graduate School decides on the recognition of coursework
completed before admission and its creditability for ECTS credits for the doctoral
program.

(i) Supervision within the framework of the study program i s p r o v i d e d by two
teachers: one academic supervisor and one artistic supervisor. Artistic and academic
supervisors must declare their willingness t o supervise the applicant in writing.
(z) All members of the HfM within the meaning of § z AbS.4-7 of the Doctoral Degree
Regulations are entitled to supervise in the cooperative structured doctoral degree program
as part of the Research Training Group for academic supervision. All full-time artistic
professors at the HfM and artistic lecturers at the HIIB are eligible for artistic
supervision. The Doctoral Committee decides on exceptions in consultation with the
Director of the Graduate School.
(3) The following support constellations between the contractual partners are possible:
i. Academic supervision by associated academic staff of the HIEB at the HfM and
artistic supervision at the HCB
z. Academic supervision at the HfM and artistic supervision at the HIEB
§6 Academic achievements
(z) Irrespective of the specific subject-specific regulations, the 4o ECTS in artistic teaching
correspond to weekly teaching of 7s minutes over the duration of 4 semesters at the HIEB
and weekly teaching of 6o minutes over the duration of 4 semesters at the HfM. How the
4o ECTS are to be implemented over the course of the 6 semesters must be agreed with the
head of the degree program and the head of the Graduate School and set out in writing. The
Vice-Rectorate for Teaching must be involved. The Doctoral Committee must be informed.
Artistic teaching usually takes place as part of the Master's degree program integrated into
the doctoral program at the Ilooperation partner HIEB. The exact teaching times depend on
the regulations there.
(3) Proof of competency must be provided for all coursework.

(4) The competent bodies of the two universities decide on the recognition of
coursework completed at institutions other than those listed in 9 4 and their
ECTS creditability in close consultation with the management of the Graduate
School. The Doctoral Committee must be informed.
(z) In accordance with Section 9 3 (s) of the Doctoral Degree Regulations, the dissertation
may also be written in an academic language other than German, French or English,
provided that supervision, assessment and evaluation are guaranteed. The disputation and
the artistic or artistic-scientific examination follow the same rules.
(i) The application for the opening of the doctoral procedure is generally made in
accordance with Section 6 of the Doctoral Degree Regulations. The application for
admission to the doctoral procedure in the cooperative structured doctoral degree
program must include

3) must be a member of the HfM who is authorized to conduct examinations.
t4) T h e completion of the doctoral procedure is announced by the Director of the Graduate
School on the basis of the assessment of the dissertation, the minutes of the disputation and
the examination of the artistic performance. It can only be pronounced if both
I4committees consider the requirements to have been met.
g zo Overall assessment
The overall assessment is carried out in accordance with Section iz (z) of the Doctoral Degree
Regulations, whereby the "artistic achievement" mentioned there is to be equated with the
artistic examination.
These study and examination regulations and their annexes come into force on the day following
their publication in the official announcements of the Freiburg University of Music.
