Volcanic eruption has been a constant threat to our natural environment for millions of

years,
but seldom in recent times (1) does a volcano erupted with the ferocity of Krakatoa.
Krakatoa, (2) which is a volcanic island group in Indonesia, erupted on 27th August
1883. Not only was the explosion (3) so loud that it was heard as far away (more than
3,000 km) as Perth in Australia, (4) but it is also recognized as (5) far the loudest sound
(6) ever recorded.
Ten thousand people in the region were killed, many (7) more in the enormous tsunamis
which the eruption produced – tsunamis which eventually reached South Africa and the
English Channel.
The explosion also had a major effect on the (8) surrounding world’s weather system. The
volcanic dust in the atmosphere reduced the (9) amount of sunlight reaching the earth’s
surface, reducing global temperatures by more than one degree centigrade. Only after five
years had passed (10) did global temperatures begin to normal.

Although it has a reputation for being rather basic in terms of home comforts, the modern
material used in the manufacture of tents means camping is at least a lot less hard work.
Nowadays tents are (1) so lightweight that you hardly notice you're carrying them.
They're easy to (2) lift up yet still a cheaper alternative to hotel accommodation.
Talk to an expert first before spending a lot of money (3) on a tent. Different tents suit
different needs and there's no point (4) in buying a mountaineering tent (5) if you're
planning to camp in these conditions. Don't (6) be tempted to splash out on all the latest
equipment either. Most of the fun of camping lies in the chance to get back to nature.
There's no need to take anything more (7) than the basics.
Always try to plan your arrival at the site long before (8) it gets dark. You will want to
see (9) what you're doing when you try to erect your tent. Don't forget to ask for
permission if you're not camping on a registered site, and remember to take a supply of
food and drink with you in (10) case the local shops are closed when you arrive. You can
then enjoy your first meal under the stars and begin to appreciate the joys of camping.
