This assessment evaluates your awareness of potential health hazards within a computer
engineering work environment and your ability to implement preventative measures.
Scenario: You are a computer engineer working long hours at your desk troubleshooting a complex
hardware issue. You begin to experience headaches, eye strain, and discomfort in your wrists.
Instructions:
1. Identify Hazards (4 points): List two potential industrial hygiene hazards associated with the
scenario described.
ANSWER:
1.) Ergonomic Hazards
2.) Physical Hazard
2. Health Effects (4 points): Briefly explain the potential health effects of each hazard you
identified in question
ANSWER:
1.) Ergonomic Hazards - Poor postures and repetitive motions can cause
discomfort on the body.
2.) Physical Hazard - Eye strains due to long screen times can cause headaches
and eye strains.
3. Ergonomics (6 points): Describe three ergonomic principles you can apply to your
workstation setup to minimize the discomfort you are experiencing.
ANSWER:
1.) Chair and table design management.
a.)Chair - should have arm rest, can provide back comfort, and is
height adjustable.
b.) Table - Should be height adjustable and stable. So that the we can
stand while working, because prolonged sitting can cause physical problems.
2.) Proper lighting
a.) Ambient Lighting - Use natural light as much as possible, but avoid
placing the monitor directly in front of or behind a window to prevent glare. Or
Supplement with adjustable desk lamps that provide focused lighting without
causing reflections on the screen. This can reduce eye strains.
3.) Regular Breaks - Regular breaks are the rest time of the body, so stretching
the body can help the muscles and bones loosen up the tensions of it.
4. Work Practices (6 points): Explain three work practices you can adopt to reduce the risk of
developing health problems from prolonged computer use.
ANSWER:
1.) Clean and organized workplace - Messy and dirty not only affects our
performance, but it also affects our physical and mental health. Therefore keeping the
workplace organized and clean is keeping ourselves healthy and away from illnesses.
3.) Work with good posture - most physical body problems arise from a bad body
posture, so checking the body postures from time to time or using a posture assisting
chairs can keep us away from most physical problems.
