Fixed prosthodontics ‫د\أسامة صالح‬

Zirconia plus
Manufacturing of zirconia

Compression Compression + heat

Pre-sintered zirconia Full sintered zirconia
Kattana zirconia discs Empress, DC zircon

Stabilizing of zirconia

Yuttria Magnesium Ceria

The most common use • Better esthetics • Better in resistance of low
Strong 1200 MPA • Weak thermal degradation
• Weak
Some types of zirconia in the market
Hybrid ceramic application implant

Machining

Soft hard
Presintered zirconia Full sintered zirconia
Milling then sintering Disadvantage:
Disadvantage: shrinkage + long sintering The short life span of the bure
time
Zirconia deficiency
1. Low thermal degradation
2. Esthetic problem
3. Bonding
4. Chipping of the veneering material
5. Wear of the opposing dentition
Fixed prosthodontics ‫د\أسامة صالح‬
Low thermal degradation
water
Tetragonal monoclinic cracks the rest of tetragonal convert to
monoclinic all become monoclinic (weak+ rough) sudden fracture

How to overcome?

1- Decrease grain size.

More tetragonal particles
2- Increase amount of stabilizer
3- Increase cooling agent.
4- Decrease sandblasting from outer surface
5- Polishing
6- Adding ceria stabilizer
Butt decreases mechanical properties
7- Best solution: adding alumina
1- esthetic
• zirconia opaque

solution:

1- apply veneering material (fluorapatite)

• best esthetic result

milling zirconia core try in build up with wax pressing fluorapatite

disadvantage : monochromatic shade need more characterization

2- CAD-on

Milling of porcelain veneer cemented with zirconia core

Cementation: 1- using IPS CAD glaze past or fusion glass

2- using resin cement but surface treatment first to zirconia and veneering
material
Fixed prosthodontics ‫د\أسامة صالح‬
3- Monolithic zirconia

Advantage

1- Strong
2- more conservative ( space required)
3- Time saving
4- Less chipping

How

maaufacturing solution

Increase: cubic phase(not more than 75%) , glass

Decrease: alumina, grain size

• Use katana precolored blank

Multilayered block represent the tooth color (cervical part more stains, no stains at
the incisal part )

2-labolatory solution

1- Coloring of the framework

2- Dipping or brushing technique
3- Increase temperature of sintering
4- Glazing

3- clinician roles

1- Adequate reduction
2- Proper shade selection

Monolithic zirconia

Kattana (curarry)

Subtypes

High translucent -Super translucent -Ultra-translucent

3-Y 4-Y 5-Y

100% tetragonal 75% tetragonal 50% tetragonal
0% cubic 25% cubic 50% cubic
Strongest 900-1200n MPA 800 MPA ✓ The best Esthetic
The Least esthetic 3 unit bridge 600 MPA
How translucent? Single unite- 3 ant bridge
Small particle size 90 micron Particle size 50 micron 30 micron
Use: full arch
Emax prime
✓ Upper layer : 5-y
✓ Lower layer: 3-Y
✓ Particle size: 30 micron
2- Chiping of veneering surface
Cause:

1- Coefficient of thermal expansion

2- Porosity
3- Micro crack

Solution

1- Use monolithic
2- Use CAD-ON or press instead of free hand layering
Fixed prosthodontics ‫د\أسامة صالح‬
3- Wear
Monolithic zirconia Couse less wear to the opposing surface

Factors affecting wear

1- Food type
2- Muscles force
3- Parafunctional habit

Solution : Glazing + final polishing ‫الزم مع بعض‬

4- Bonding
• Zirconia non etchable ceramic

Solution:

1- Hot chemical etching

Nitric acid + sulfuric acid in temp: 100 degree
2- Laser : Er:YAG hand laser
Pressure 2.8

Angle:90

3- Sandblasting Distance from surface: 1-2 cm

Time: 20s

Particle size: 50 micron more with cuse crackes

4- Cooljet technique

Silica is pressed into zirconia then can be etched and bonded ‫هبل‬

5-Selective infiltrated etching

Fixed prosthodontics ‫د\أسامة صالح‬
6- MDP 10-methacryloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate
Zirconia bonded to phosphate group

Bonding strength: zirconia chemical bond 15 MPA + sandblasting strength (15MPA)

=30MPA comparable to glass bonding 60 MPA+

Products containing MDP

1- Zir primer

80% acetone +20% resin matrix

Film thickness: 3 µ

2- Clearfil ceramic primer

Zir primer + silane coupling agent

Use with zirconia and glass ceramic but more effect with zirconia

3- Bisco universal bond

Film thickness 8 µ may interfere with seating special when using double coat

Problem of try in
Saliva containing phosphate bond with zirconia

Solution

 Etching with phosphoric acid

✓ Sandblasting again
✓ Using IVO-clean \ZIR-clean(concentrated zircon oxide)30s-1min

Application

Sandblasting / ivoclean prime application thinning by air 20s leave

5min apply resin cement
Fixed prosthodontics ‫د\أسامة صالح‬
Adhesion
Resin cement bonding

GIC/RMGI cementation don’t use MDP (high alkaline)

Case : short clinical crown

 Go for subgingival preparation to increase the vertical walls
✓ Bonding with resin cement (more durable )
