2. In 1872, Rizal experienced the execution of three Filipino priests, which sparked his interest in fighting
for his country's independence.
3. Rizal left the Philippines in 1882 to study in Spain, where he wrote his two most famous novels, "Noli
Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo," which exposed the abuses of Spanish colonizers in the Philippines.
4. In 1896, Rizal returned to the Philippines and was arrested by the Spanish authorities for his
nationalist activities.
5. On December 30, 1896, Jose Rizal was executed by firing squad in Manila, becoming a martyr for the
Philippine independence movement.
