Emotional Exhaustion

First, we found a negative link between work–family conflict and job satisfaction and is consistent with
the findings of Adams et al. (1996), Anafarta (2011), Asbari et al. (2020), Baeriswyl et al. (2016), Chau
(2019), Hang-yue et al. (2005), Rhee et al. (2020) and Vickovic and Morrow (2020). This indicates that
the employees that are not physically tired from working and have enough time to participate in the
family life would be more satisfied with their work.
Second, the results supported the mediation role of emotional exhaustion for the relationship between
work–family conflict and job satisfaction among construction project professionals. In this case,
emotional exhaustion fully mediated the relationship between work–family conflict and job satisfaction.

Third, the work–family conflict occurring to the employees in Sri Lanka’s construction industry has
turned out to be an issue as it is related to an increased level of emotional exhaustion and a decline in
job satisfaction. In the workplace settings, the project-level employees have to adapt to temporary work
processes to deliver the project objectives. This creates a dynamic work environment.
