INDIVIDUAL: Rip-off films in media have been existing since

the earlier times of the film industry, usually existing as a
way for a film company to make a quick buck from people
getting confused through the title of the rip-off and the
actual film, simply put rip-off films exist to exploit on the
publicity of successful ones these films are typically known
as “mock busters” however I would prefer to call them rip-
offs. The rip-off film industry is a strange one, from funny
because they are bad to just being completely awful to watch
rip-offs, today I will be focusing on some certain rip-off
films and covering them, producing my own rip-off film scene
through the research I have done into this industry and have
an interview with an individual who has been in this industry
before/currently is in it to find out more information about
what it is like.

VOICE-OVER: Throughout the years, many rip-off films have been

produced within media, I will be focusing on a specific few
within this section that I believe are good examples of how
poorly done these rip-off films can be and how well they
exploit the publicity of the film they are attempting to rip-
off.
THE AMAZING BULK
The first film I will be covering is known as “The Amazing
Bulk” a 2012 sci-fi live action /animated superhero film
directed and co-produced by Lewis Schoenbrun who is also known

CREATED BY CALLUM SMITH

for being in the editor’s department for the films “The Golem”
and “UHF”. The amazing bulk is a rip-off of the film The
Incredible Hulk this is probably the most entertaining film in
this list of rip-offs due to the absurdity of it, this rip off
film had been entirely done under a greenscreen and on a
budget of 14,000 USD and it really shows, just from this
opening scene alone most of you watching this are likely to be
thinking “what am I watching?” and I don’t blame you because I
was too. As a basic plot summary, the amazing bulk follows a
scientist who ends up injecting himself with an experimental
serum giving him the ability to transform into a giant purple-
skinned humanoid when he’s angry/upset (picking up on anything
yet from what it’s ripping off?). Now, spoilers ahead as I
explain the story, A scientist called Henry has attempted at
creating a serum at enhancing muscle mass several times to no
avail for the military. He also would like to marry his
girlfriend which the girlfriend's father disapproves with who
is the one in charge of the serum, after successfully creating
the serum Henry then goes on to inject himself with the serum
and transforms into The Bulk. 2 detectives find out that Henry
is The Bulk and attempt to stop him as he runs away in a panic
and ends up accidentally killing one of the detectives which
causes the other one to take him into prison. The girlfriend's
father then takes Henry to a mental facility and explains to
Henry that he would like him to stop the "Villain" in this
story from blowing up half the world and in exchange the
father would approve of the marriage between Henry and his
daughter. Henry then goes on to break into the "Villain’s"
castle and kill him, then we watch as the father actually
betrays Henry and attempts to kill him and we watch a chase
scene with a ridiculous amount of random stock assets which is
just so hilarious. At the end, we watch as Henry has survived
and proposes to his girlfriend just for his girlfriend's
father to jump at Henry causing them to both fall off a
balcony and die. Finally, we see the girlfriend at Henry's
grave mourning him and the detective also goes there to say he
hopes Henry is in hell just for him to come back to life and
the film ends. According to reviewers, the amazing bulk has
some of the worst writing for films, with a nonsensical plot,
a villain that could be completely removed and nothing would
have changed in the film and terrible CGI that overuses stock
greenscreen assets (one part of the film is literally just
them using all the left-over assets). Now, I understand you
probably think this rip-off film is horrible from the way I
have talked about it (which it is) but I will admit this was
very enjoyable for me to watch just because of how bad it is
and how I’ve never seen anything like it. My closing thoughts
for the amazing bulk will have to be, probably going to have
to be the best while worst film I’ve ever watched in my life
having not seen anything like this and also essentially what
did I just watch?

ATLANTIC RIM
The second film I will be covering is known as “Atlantic Rim”
a 2013 sci-fi action monster kaiju film directed by Jared Cohn
who is also known for “the horde” and “street survivors: the
true story of Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash”. Now, Atlantic rim
is a shameful rip-off of pacific rim that was produced by the
asylum which is a company that essentially thrives on ripping-
off popular films in media being well known for producing low-
budget direct to video mock busters as quickly as possible.
The film’s name had actually been changed at one point to be
“From the Sea” however I will be using Atlantic Rim throughout
this, this has got to be the one film I didn’t really enjoy
much at all within this dive of rip-off films in media
essentially just banking on giant robots fighting kaiju’s and
being a classic mock buster in general as this rip-off had
actually released 3 days prior to Pacific Rim’s release, which
shows how these kinds of companies will exploit the publicity
of a film. Now the reviews for this film are just screaming
“don’t waste your time on this” and I can’t blame them but
here is a basic story summary from what I understood after
watching this mock buster, after the disappearance of an oil
rig and a mini-submarine, the scientist "Dr. Margaret Adams"
initiates the Armada Program, which is giant robots designed
for deep sea rescue missions. The robots, which consist of
three dive 1400 Meters to the sea bed and encounter a Kaiju
monster which caused the oil rig's disappearance and without
permission from the Admiral, one of the robots goes after the
kaiju monster, causing the Admiral to send every Naval fleet
on the East Coast to the oil rig site. The robot emerges from
the sea onto the beach to warn the bystanders in the area to
get away and is suddenly attacked by the monster and the fight
enters the city and the robot takes the monster down. Later in
the film, it's discovered that a kaiju monster egg has
hatched, being much bigger than the initial kaiju monster, the
monster wreaks havoc everywhere it goes destroying mostly
every area it comes in contact with. The robots, then fly to
where the kaiju monster is, also stopping a nuclear missile
from hitting it in the process to stop a nuclear holocaust.
Then, one of the robots grabs the nuclear warhead and the
monster and fly's up into the atmosphere, proceeding to kick
the monster into space and detonate the warhead in the
process, ending the film as he crash lands onto earth and
everyone celebrates. According to reviews, many people believe
this film has dreadful screenplay and acting, that it doesn’t
make any sense at all and is simply a Cash grab and if I’m
being honest, these reviewers are completely true, what makes
this worse is the fact this mock buster somehow ended up
having a total of nine different script changes during
production, which you can really tell with how it’s been
executed. Overall, Atlantic rim is not worth watching, but is

CREATED BY CALLUM SMITH

a great example of how these mock busters try their hardest to
cash in on the true films success due to it releasing earlier
than pacific rim and being the plainest rip off I’ve ever
seen.

METAL MAN
The third film I will be covering is known as “Metal Man” a
2008 action, adventure, sci-fi film directed by Ron Karkoska
and being the only film, he has ever directed at this time,
which I am not surprised about as the film appears like a
school/college project. This was clearly a iron man rip-off
and I didn’t really have high expectations or expect an
enjoyable experience for this film at all, considering the run
time is 1hour 26 minutes somehow and the quality being
terrible I expected a very dull and boring time watching this,
somehow making the company asylum I mentioned earlier look
like professionals. As a basic story summary, our main
character Kyle Finn is creating a video game while living with
his parents still and realizes he's late for work, after
talking to his love interest Julie he arrives at the lab (his
job) where he meets with Dr. Blake, creator of the metal man
suit. After getting Kyle to put on the suit, Dr Blake
instructs him to go into the freezer as they were testing how
well the suit does against the elements of the cold, while
Kyle is inside of the freezer Dr Blake suddenly gets attacked
by the Villain "Reed" and his gang of ninjas. After the
villain takes down Dr Blake, he takes a copy of the metal man
helmet and leaves the lab, we watch as Dr Blake starts dying
and lets Kyle out of the freezer and we learn Kyle was hired
because he is "the right character" and then Dr Blake dies and
becomes Kyle's suit assistant similar to Jarvis. After this,
we learn that Kyle cannot take the suit off, however he can
hide it by saying the word "Stealth", Kyle returns home and
discovers his parents have been killed and decides to go and
defeat the ninjas and the villain. Later, at the end of the
film we watch as Kyle has to prepare for his final battle on a
low energy suit, which is against a green metal man? the fight
ends with Kyle victorious and the villain dies, this film also
has a post credit scene which is just random and nonsensical
like the rest of the film. Now, this film was quite the
nonsensical piece, often being very random and confusing at
times, however I personally found this film to be funny bad
after watching it myself, as I did enjoy it at times, such as
those silly fight scenes, however the film has an issue mainly
being the run time and the film being padded out a lot by
unnecessary sequences, there is literally a scene where we
just look at a character sitting down doing nothing for so
long. According to the reviews, the film is actually similar
to Adam West’s batman just without the characters, the plot,

CREATED BY CALLUM SMITH

the locations and the props. To summarize my thoughts on this
film I will simply say don’t waste your time on this.

JURASSIC SHARK
The last film I will be covering is known as “Jurassic Shark”
and I believe covering this one last was a good idea as this
was the most painfully dull one for me to get through.
Jurassic Shark surprisingly instead of ripping off 1 film is
actually ripping off 2 being Jaws and Jurassic Park, this rip-
off is a primarily horror/action film directed by Brett Kelly
who is also known for “Raiders of the Lost Shark”,
“Thunderstorm: The Return of Thor” and “She-Rex”, which tells
you a lot about what this director prioritizes. You don’t even
really need to watch the film as just from the reviews alone
you can tell how terrible it is from “how can anybody make
something so devoid of any redeeming qualities?” to “why is a
megalodon in a lake?”. Now to explain the story of this
horrible film, at the headquarters of an oil facility, an
individual discusses with Dr Lincoln Grant about their
drilling and a scientist who is worried about the safety of
the project, the worried scientist then appears and discusses
about the validity of the project. During the discussion an
explosion destroys the building, caused by them drilling too
deep. This explosion is heard by two girls relaxing at the
beach, these girls go into the water and get attacked by a
shark and killed. Next, we watch as 5 criminals that have
stolen a painting are heading to an island called "Melver
Island" on a boat and we see the shark attack the boat, ending
up killing one of the criminals as the others escape to the
island where another one of the criminals die and the painting
is lost. Mean whilst, we see four college students going to
expose illegal drilling on an island called "Kat Island", the
shark attacks their boat and kills one of the students while
the others wash up on the island. Later, we see as the
criminals meet up with the college students and the criminals
pose as a tourist crew and they go to find help, ending up
finding Dr Grant and we see as one of the criminals reveal
themself and force Grant into the water causing the shark to
kill him. Later, we see the shark get exploded by dynamite and
the film ends as we see another shark eat two fishermen. Now,
I know what your probably thinking, “what did I just listen
to?” and I don’t blame you because I don’t really know either.
This has got to be the most painful one for me to sit through,
just like the previous film metal man this one has an issue of
having an extremely unnecessarily long runtime for a film of
this quality.
