Abstract

Loadbearing construction is most appropriately used for buildings in which the floor
area is subdivided into a relatively large number of rooms of small to medium size
and in which the floor plan is repeated on each storey throughout the height of the
building. The types of buildings which are compatible with these requirements
include flats, hostels, hotels and other residential buildings. A considerable amount
of research and practical experience over many years has led to the improvement
and refinement of the various structural codes. As a result, the structural design of
masonry buildings is approaching a level similar to that applying to steel and
concrete. Analysis and design of typical three storeys loadbearing cross-wall
building was performed by using two type of clay brick. The design results was used
to validate the accuracy of using these bricks in the multi-storey building and to
check whether their design will withstand the given loads conditions. The final
conclusion discover that loadbearing brickwork, if checked, are likely to be equally
capable of fulfilling the structural function, and as compared with reinforced
concrete and steel-framed structures, the brickwork solution is not only cheaper but
considerably safe for multi-storey building, thus eliminating the need for a structural
frame for low rise building.
