CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Technical Vocational Education and Training also known as TVET

career is one of the most important decisions of College Student in
Cronasia Foundation College INC. This first career decision they make will
have an impact on various aspects of their lives. It will for example
determine the direction in which they will develop skills and knowledge,
the type of organization in which they will start working and the income
that they will earn. Bachelor’s degree courses which consume four to five
years and most of these require certificates of legibility (PRC ID’s), in
other words they need first to pass a licensure examination before they
are allowed to legally perform their profession.

The purpose of the study to be career choice has been serious

problem among Bachelor’s Degree student. Career and desire are an
important question for everybody. A lot of students in Bachelor’s courses
believe that their future is a glorious adventure in which they are bound to
succeed. To ensure them have the idea that they would be able to work in
the public establishment as soon as they complete Bachelor’s Degree.

Splaver (2000) stated that “personality” plays an important role in

the choosing of the right course. A student’s personality must be self-
motivated type. As to investigate courses possibilities from nearly on their
lives, and not the procrastinating type that waits till they are compelled to
decide. Students must take seriously the role grades play in limiting
Opportunities in the future. Another important thing to consider that has
influenced most of Grade 11 students’ choice of career is the instant
availability of the job relevant to their course after graduation. In the
Previous years, an observation has been done that most of the fresh
graduates were unable to seek appropriate jobs

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the literature, studies, theoretical framework

and conceptual framework which have some bearings on the study.

Related Literature

BTVTED Courses

The Bachelor in Technical-Vocational Teacher Education (Btvted)

program is a four-year teacher education program designed to equip
future teachers with adequate and relevant competencies in the area of
technical and vocational teacher education. It also aims to develop highly
competent and motivated teachers in Technology and
Livelihood Education in their area of specialization. Furthermore, the
program aims to impart knowledge, skills, attitudes, values and
experiences that will provide prospective Grade 9-10 TLE teachers, Senior
High School Tech-Voc Livelihood Track teachers, TVET
Trainers/Instructors, and higher education institutions faculty members
with the necessary competencies essential for effective teaching. The
graduates of Btvted program are considered to have satisfied the TESDA
requirement for Trainer’s Methodology, hence, there would be no need for
them to take the TM assessment after passing the licensure Examination
for teachers. Finally, it is expected that Btvted graduates will exemplify the
values and qualities of UTSP brand which includes the ability to contribute
to various forms of development in the community using their knowledge,
skills, competence and abilities coupled with humanity values to genuinely
care for others and the environment to uphold the greater good( Strategic
Communication Office 2024) .
Electrical Technology

Theraja & Therajam (2025) pointed out that electrical technology

generally refers to the study and application of electrical principles,
circuits, systems, and devices. The field includes: Electrical Circuits,
understanding the behavior and analysis of electrical circuits, including DC
circuits, AC circuits, and transient circuits. Electrical Machines refer to
the study of various electrical machines such as generators, motors,
transformers, and alternators, including their principles of operation,
design, and applications. Power Systems encompasses analysis, design,
and operation of electrical power generation, transmission, and distribution
systems, including power plant operation, grid integration, and renewable
energy technologies. Electronics refer to the study of electronic devices,
circuits, and systems, including semiconductor devices, integrated circuits,
digital electronics, analog electronics, and microelectronics. Control
Systems mean the understanding and implementation of control systems
for regulating and controlling the behavior of electrical and mechanical
systems, including feedback control, PID control, and
automation.Instrumentation and Measurement. These are techniques
and instruments for measuring electrical quantities such as voltage,
current, resistance, capacitance, and inductance, as well as
instrumentation for process control and automation. Electrical Safety. It
refers to practices, standards, and regulations for ensuring the safe
operation of electrical systems and equipment, including protection
against electric shock, fire hazards, and electrical faults. Renewable
Energy means study of renewable energy technologies such as solar
power, wind power, hydroelectric power, and biomass energy, including
their integration into electrical systems and grid networks.
Food Service Management

Prescribed for students enrolled in food service degree programs

and vocational courses, as well as those already employed in the food
service industry, Food service Management in the Phoverview of the food
service system and its elements. This course highlights the essential
components and requirements in setting up and operating a food service
institution that include material resources, personnel functions, equipment
maintenance, budget control, sanitation and personal hygiene, and food
preparation, cooking, and presentation. lt also contains figures,
illustrations, tables, and end-of-chapter summaries and teaching
strategies to reinforce and check comprehension (Perdigon, 2016).

Garments, Fashion and Design

Garment design is an integration of all the design elements,

including color, texture, space, lines, pattern silhouette, shape, proportion,
balance, emphasis or focal point, rhythm and harmony. Each of these
contributes towards the visual perception and psychological comfort of the
garment. Principles of illusion can be utilized in garment design to flatter
the figure of the wearer (Davis, 1996). For example, the Muller–Lyer
illusion (a line with angled extensions at each end appears longer than a
line of equal length, but with doubled back angled lines at each end) may
be applied to pattern design to lengthen or shorten the perceived figure of
the wearer. The lengthening effect may also be created by applying the
horizontal–vertical illusion, i.e. a vertical line seems longer than a
horizontal one of the same length. Hunter & Fan, (2015)

Factors Influencing Career Choice

The career choice of the students must need to be based on:

strong knowledge, complete information, and appropriately guided,
matching individual personality type and other intrinsic and extrinsic
factors. The students need to be oriented on new emerging trends, future
opportunities and challenges in the context of career choice options. They
need to know the prevalent market trends and practices and job scenario
of various sectors ( Ahmed,2017)

Making a career choice is a defining phase in every student's life.

Students have to consider several factors before arriving at a decision.
The purpose of this research was to see the factors which affect the
choice of career among students. This study investigated the influence of
several factors such as parental education, profession and income on the
career decisions of 432 students from two public sector universities in
Lahore city. The influence of peers on the respondents' choice of subject
specialization was also investigated along with any impressions taken
from the media. It also examined whether students at the MS level opt for
their chosen fields forcefully, make compromises, or make decisions
which are independent and without external pressures. Data was collected
through a questionnaire and in-depth interviews. The results show the
parents influence as most significant, followed by influence from peers,
gender, print media, financial reasons, interest and others( Kazi
&Akhlaq ,2017)

Environmental Factors

The environmental factors that surround students can have a

significant impact on their educational background and future
performance. Some of the aims of understanding these impacts include:
Identifying the factors that influence students' academic achievement:
Environmental factors such as socioeconomic status, family background,
school quality, and neighborhood conditions can all have an impact on a
student's academic achievement. Understanding these factors can help
educators and policymakers develop strategies to mitigate negative
impacts and support students who face barriers to academic success.
( Hussain & Hussaini 2023)

Parents/Guardian Factors

A parent's impact in a child's education includes not just sending

them to a public or private school, but also electing to home school them.
Given that parents have a significant influence on their children's
educational and career choices, it is reasonable to conclude that parents
also play a significant role in determining the type of education their
children will receive, whether vocational or general, private or public
(Ayub, 2017).

Students Factors

Deciding for a college course to take is quiet challenging for a

student due to the many influencing factors or reasons in the environment
that may affect his own preference. This study aimed to determine the
factors that influence the College of Education students at MSU-TCTO in
choosing Education as their college course. Further, it tried to determine
different approaches in managing the course they are currently taking at
the college. The result of this study would benefit the administrators,
teachers, parents, students, and future researchers as they gain new
insights about the factors that influence the students in choosing their
college course. This study made use of a phenomenological-qualitative
study conducted to the selected students at the College of Education,
MSU-TCTO. Interview guide was utilized to gather the needed data. It
consists of guide questions validated by the panel of experts. Data
gathered were transcribed, thematically analyzed and interpreted. Based
on the findings of the study, the common factors that influence the
students in choosing Education as their college course were parental
discretion/ influences, external influences, affordability, practicality,
personal preference and interest, and socio-economic problems.
Moreover, the respondents’ yielded different approaches and ways to
manage the courses they are currently taking at the College of Education
such as self-determination, overcoming fear of subject difficulties,
perseverance and self-confidence, personal preference and interest and
developing participation and study habit/skills. In conclusion, there were
several factors that influenced the COED students in taking Education
course. Further, the course they are currently taking were not solely
chosen by themselves. The influence of other people in choosing their
course may help or hinder them to succeed in life. Hence, appropriate
assistance must be provided to students such as seminar or conference
on career guidance, among others to assist them with their course
placements and help them invest their full potentials( Sadjail, Sansawi &
Matolo ,2022)

Students’ Personality

Everybody has a different personality type and set of distinctive

traits from birth. However, understanding students’ personality and
temperaments will enable a teacher to better understand the reasons
behind their actions. It might assist them in resolving behavioral problems.
Furthermore, it is not uncommon for teachers to have a class full of people
pleasers, extroverts, social butterflies, and class clowns in the same year.
(Vyad 2024)

Related Studies

Abede (2023) carried out a research at the Light Path Secondary School
using qualitative data, adopting document analysis and interviews with teachers,
administrators and parents. Their work found several factors influencing students'
choice of TVET subject. From their study three (3) themes emerged. The first
theme was stigma and a lack of adequate resources, which were classified as
challenges. Parental guidance and students' interests were additional factors
categorised as influencers. The last theme, benefits, saw entrepreneurship as a
possible mechanism to help students in their career quest. It was concluded that
career guidance and TVET courses at the secondary school level are not
meeting students' needs, which negatively impact their interest in pursuing these
courses.

Ohwofasa (2023) determined the factors influencing career choice in

technical education among Colleges of Education students in Lagos State. The
study involved a sample of 100 students drawn from two College of Education
within the state. The instruments used for data collection was a structured
questionnaire titled: "Career Choice in Technical Education Profession
Questionnaire (CCTEPQ)" Three research questions were formulated to guide
the study. Mean and standard deviation were used to analyze the data in line
with the level of environmental, guardian's and students' personality influences
on career choice in Technical Education. Findings of the study indicated that
Technical Education students agree that environmental factors in research
question 1 with a grand mean value of 3.023, and parents/guardians related
factors in research question 2 having a grand mean value of 2.764, while
Students personality related factors; peer group related factors and career
guidance officer in research question 3 had a grand mean value of 2.27. Based
on these findings, the study recommended that students should not be forced by
parents or guardians to choose any career but be guided according to their
ability. Students should be encouraged to liaise and interact among themselves
and their teachers based on individual personality differences. Ohwofasa (2023)

Amoako (2020) investigated the factors influencing students' choice of

tertiary education in Sunyani Technical University. The study adopted
quantitative method using descriptive survey. Questionnaire was the main
instrument used to solicit primary data from the respondents. Two hundred (200)
students of 2019/2020 academic year batch were selected using convenience
sampling technique to participate in the study. Descriptive and inferential
statistics were used to analyse the data collected. The study identified reputation
of institution as a major factor influence respondent's choice of tertiary institution
and followed by parental factors. The least factor was peer and media influence
respectively. The study also unraveled those subject combinations at Senior High
School, personal interest, career desire, employment opportunities, recognition of
the programme and academic records were factors influencing students' choice
of programme in tertiary education. Finally, results of the study have brought to
the fore that cost of the programme, inadequate tools and equipment for practical
lessons and inadequate practical lessons were challenges students face in the
choice of programme. It is recommended that parents should always take time to
discuss academic issues with their wards rather than imposing their opinions on
them.

Theoretical framework

In this study there are four theories that support the Career and Selection
Factors Influencing Learners Choice on TVET Course Among BTVTED Students
of Cronasia Foundation College, INC. The four theories are Social Cognitive
Career Theory, Holland’s Theory of Vocational Personalities, Expectancy- Value
Theory, and Ecological System Theory.

Social Cognitive Career Theory

The Social Cognitive Theory or (SCCT) by Albert Bandura as outlined by

Lent and Brown in various publications spanning from 1994 to 2013, presents a
well-examined approach to comprehending behaviors in education and
occupation. Drawing from the insights of earlier career theorists such as Super,
Holland, Krumboltz, and Lofquist and Dawis, SCCT aims to construct a cohesive
framework that elucidates how individuals develop vocational interests, select
occupations, attain different levels of career success and stability, experience
satisfaction or well-being in their work settings, and handle various work-life
events, ranging from routine decision-making to navigating transitions and
balancing multiple roles.

Furthermore, Social Cognitive Career Theory emphasizes the dynamic

and context-specific facets of individuals, including self-perception, outlook on
the future, and behavior, as well as their surroundings, such as social networks
and financial constraints. While certain traits remain relatively stable and aid in
forecasting outcomes like career decisions, both individuals and their
environments are subject to change, sometimes undergoing significant
transformations. An SCCT agenda asks, for example, how are people able to
change, develop, and regulate their own behavior? How do interests differentiate
and intensify, or shift, over time? What factors, other than traits, promote career
choice and change? How can career skills be nurtured and work performances
improved? How can work lives be made more satisfying? SCCT shows less
emphasis on precise age-related milestones but instead focuses more on
theoretical aspects that could either facilitate or impede career behaviors
throughout various developmental stages.

Consequently, SCCT offers a supplementary perspective for examining

inquiries pertinent to specific developmental theories, such as the evolving
significance of work and other life roles for individuals, the narrowing or
broadening of career opportunities over time, and individuals' capacity to
influence their own developmental advancement (Bandura, 1997).
