Geometry Part 2 Unit 5 Assignment Student name ________________

Your friend, Ed, wants to build a new fence enclosure for his chihuahua, Scrappy. Below is a
diagram of Scrappy’s current enclosure (no gate is necessary since the fence is low enough so
that Ed can just place Scrappy inside).

Ed has limited his enclosure options to the three fences shown below:
Find the perimeter and area of each fence option to help Ed make his decision. (You might need
to use trig ratios). Work must be shown.

31.6 + 10 + 31.6 + 70 = 143.2 A = ½(a + b) * h

ft. A = ½(10 + 70) * 10
A = ½(80) * 10
A = 40 * 10
Trapezoid A = 400 square feet

12 * 6 = 72 ft. A = ½ * perimeter * apothem

A = ½ * 72 * 10.4
A = 374.4 square feet
Hexagon

Which fence option would cost the most to build? (Be sure to consider fence length and the
number of posts).
The trapezoid will cost the most to build. It has the greatest perimeter so it will require the most
fence material and posts.

Which fence option would you recommend to Ed based on cost and the amount of space for
Scrappy? Explain your choice.
I would recommend the triangle option because it will not cost the most and it will provide
Scrappy with almost 390 square feet of space.
Ed is thinking of getting another chihuahua to be a friend for Scrappy. If he doubles the length
of the perimeter to make more room, how would this change the areas of the fence options?
Find the new areas of each fence option.

72 * 2 = 144 ft. A = ½ * perimeter * apothem

A = ½ * 144 * 10.4
A = 748.8 square feet
