Ans. Lord Canning was the first Viceroy of India. His tenure lasted for four years
between 1858 and 1862.
Q2 Who is a Viceroy?
The Governor-General of India was given the title of Viceroy, that is, a personal
representative of the Crown. This is one of the important changes after the
British Parliament passed a new Act in 1858 and transferred the powers of the
East India Company to the British Crown in order to ensure more responsible
management of Indian affairs.
Lord Mountbatten was the last Viceroy of India and the first Governor-General
of independent India. He was sent as Viceroy to India in March to make
arrangements for the transfer of Power by June 1948.
