COUNTRY: Kenya

Initially known as British East Africa Protectorate or British East Africa

Capital: Nairobi (comes from the Massai phrase Enkare Nyrobi, translating to “Cool Water”)

GEOGRAPHY: Nairobi River flows through the city. Higher population concentration in the west
along L. Victoria; capital of Nairobi; along the Indian ocean coast in the southeast region.

LEADERS: - William Ruto has been the president of Kenya since 13th September 2022 and he is
the fifth and current president of Kenya. Before he served as the first elected deputy minister
from 2013 – 2022.

HISTORY: The seat of the Prime Minister of Kenya was abolished after it became a republic in
1964. The post was however recreated in the year 2008 in the month of April but again got
abolished in the year 2013. It was not until 1920, that the country was named as Kenya.

LANGUAGES: Official languages include English and Kiswahili and there are a various number of
indigenous languages spoken around the country.

POPULATION: In total, 57.1 million. Median age (The parameter that divides the entire population
into two halves based upon their age) is 20 years, population growth is at the rate of 2.09%, the
percentage of urban population is 29.5% and Rural is 70.5 % (majority). Fertility Rate- 3.259
births/woman ( a decline of 1.57% from 2022). Mortality rate presently: - 8.06 deaths/ 1000
population. Religions: - Christian ( majority), Muslim 10.9%, other 1.8%, none 1.6%. Ethnic Groups:
Kikuyu 17.1%, Luhya 14.3%, Kalenjin 13.4 % etc.

Literacy Rate - 81.5% of the total population. Net migration rate: - 0.172/ 1000 population, 2.27%
decline from 2023 (- 0.172/1000)

EXPENDITURES:

TOTAL GDP: - 108.92 billion dollars.

On education: - 4.8% of the total GDP. Current health expenditure: - 4.3% of the total GDP.
