RUBATO

-Rubato-
One of the most beautiful things on this planet is a whale. Enormous, yet graceful; powerful, yet gentle. I once had the privilege
of seeing a blue whale off the coast of Monterey Bay in California when I was young, and it was an experience I'll never forget.
Rubato is a musical term that literally means "to rob time." When a composer adds this notation to a piece, it gives the
performer the liberty to stretch the tempo to enhance the emotional impact of the music. Some experiences in life are so
wonderful that you want to rob time, so you can savor them a little longer – my whale watching trip de nitely being one of
them!
I designed this cardigan to be something simple, yet featuring complicated looking cables that would make it nice for those
occasions when you want to savor life in both comfort and elegance. Rubato is knit with a cotton blend yarn, so it's soft and
springy, but not overly warm. The cables are an adaptation of a stitch found in Norah Gaughan’s Knitted Cable Sourcebook. I
hope you enjoy this sweater and can nd ways to enjoy the special rubato moments in life.

Weave in ends, and block pieces to measurements. With RS facing, sew shoulder seams between fronts and
back. Then sew sleeves to each armhole, starting at the center point of the shoulder and working your way
down to each side of the armhole. It's helpful to pin the sleeve to the armhole, so the fabric won't bunch as
you're seaming. Starting at the cuff, sew sleeve seam and side seams in one continuous line.
Neckband: With RS facing, beginning at the Right Front edge, pick up and knit 1 stitch for every BO stitch and
3 stitches for every 4 rows along the sloped areas of the neck opening, making sure it's an odd number of
stitches. Work k1, p1 (ending with a k1) ribbing for 1" / 2.5 cm, and BO loosely in pattern.
Button Band: With RS facing, on the Left Front, pick up and knit 3 stitches for every 4 rows along the edge,
making sure it's an odd number of stitches. Work k1, p1 (ending with a k1) ribbing for 1" / 2.5 cm, and BO
loosely in pattern. With stitch markers or pins, mark where you want to place the buttons, making sure you
have one 0.5" / 1.25 cm up from the bottom edge, one at the beginning of the neck shaping, and the others
spaced evenly in between. Note: Every other row should start with p1, k1, otherwise you will get Seed Stitch
instead of ribbing.
Buttonhole Band: Work as for Button Band and Right Front until band is 0.5" / 1.25 cm long. Work Buttonhole
Row as follows: work in k1, p1 ribbing until you reach a spot where you want the button. Then work k2tog, yo,
and continue in ribbing until the next marker for the button. On the next row, work even in ribbing pattern, as
established. Continue until Buttonhole Band measures 1" / 2.5 cm, and then BO evenly in pattern. Note: Every
other row should start with p1, k1, otherwise you will get Seed Stitch instead of ribbing.
Sew buttons to Button Band, making sure they line up with the holes on the Buttonhole Band. If desired, you
can steam block the piece again to make sure the seams and neckband, etc. lay at with the rest of the fabric.
