The main function of the respiratory system is to supply the oxygen necessary for the body and

remove carbon dioxide from the body.

It helps maintain the acid-base balance of the body by removing carbon dioxide.
It also warms the air to match the body temperature and moisturizes the air to the
humidity level that the body needs.
Protects the body from harmful germs and other foreign particles that come with
the air and pushes them out of the body.
Air supports making sounds by vibrating the vocal cords.
The air passes the olfactory nerve, and gives the sense of smell which prevents
breathing in dangerous gasses.

Nasal Cavity – Filters, warms up, and moistens the air that goes into the body. This area also
contains olfactory receptors for smell.
The Pharynx – this is the common passage for both air and food. It directs air to the trachea and
food to the esophagus.
The Larynx – this contains vocal cords for voice production and protects the lower airway during
swallowing.
